go to 5:22 and look at the fuel pump. Its already wet at the flanges. Looks like it was a slow seap by the gaskets. The BrakeKlean may have removed the sealing dirt around the edges ;)

Recording video regardless of broadcasting seems to have a certain benefit to a build I guess. Tho you are much more interesting than the cursing and swearing I would have to bleep if I ever did... Looking at a Porsche 914 2.0 for my build.

I once (as a teenager) did a repair on a 1960 Valiant and was very proud of myself. Jumped in and started it up and it ran perfectly, up until a screwdriver I had left atop the air cleaner, fell into the fan and impaled itself in the radiator. Keep on and please paint that car some color other than yellow; all the best to you both!
@HomeBuiltByJeff

That would have sucked! Definitely not going yellow ;)

Story for you Jeff, brought my second beetle in 2006 from a lady in Gundagai.A few kms from Gundagai started smelling fuel, stopped at garage to find fuel all over the motor, grabbed my daughter water bottle and wash fuel away, stuck fuel line back into carb and had very slow trip back to Sydney. True story 😊 and still have it ❤️

It sounds like we are both lucky to have found the leaks before any nasty consequences

Those two bendable hoses are the same as in our Porsche 964 going to the heater under the dash.... I bought my 1970 240Z yesterday. Going to start my build soon.

Good work catching that fuel leak! That’s the advantage of a nice clean engine bay- you can see them leaks early!

Hi Jeff, buy a new Fuel Pump, you can try to change the diaphragm from the original one, but you might still have problems. Buy a new sealed one, put (a lot of) grease where the pin presses from below and be happy. :D The paint in the tins made difference, nice results! Cheers, Paulo

Luck you noticed the leak when you did! Engine bay looks great!

1: Nice jacket Mrs. Jeff, a real racer style, you should drive the Porsche in that. 2: Jeff you just need Manila folder card to make another gasket, I've used it throughout carbs and water systems. Use a ring binder hole punch as a nibble to get holes and radii, I even spray one side with adhesive for easy assembly. 3: try to weld the outside corners not inside, it's easier to grind back for a clean finish.

The funny thing about this, I looked up the best way to clean up because I just got back home from a campout, and your bug is the same color and roof rack set up on my 57 oval

Your fuel pump seems to be at the end of its useful life, it is leaking through the bottom, quite possibly the membrane on the inside may have a hole in it, it is actually good that you catched this leak because it can dilute the oil in your motor as gasoline seeps down to the crankcase, these fuel pumps are quite inexpensive and it is a very good idea to change the oil after you change the pump.

good thing you remembered not to drill a hole in the metal sheet he he as always keep up the good work regards Sören

It would be great if you did a more DIY type of video, where you actually showed how to clean the engine, what to unplug and why, how to reconnect it, etc. I'm starting my journey of learning how to work on my Beetle and would appreciate any such info that could help someone who isn't a mechanic, but wants to become competent

@@HomeBuiltByJeff I do follow them and have learned a lot, but the more content the better. I can't really find a complete guide on cleaning the engine bay without damaging the engine

The solvent from the paint might have reacted with the gasket.

Hi Jeff, are you using an inexpensive welder or have you gone all out on an expensive version. Cheers. Trent
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 5 лет назад
That is not really a good question. The price of a welder doesn't tell me anything about it. This is done with an inverter MIG with .8mm wire and Argon mix gas.
