Ford Mondeo mk5 with 162k miles on the clock. The engine flywheel is worn causing bad vibrations through the vehicle but in this case the flywheel is not rattling
Holy cow, thank you RU-vid algorithm for finally finding me the experience I'm having! Mine was not rattling but after hard acceleration and then deceleration I would get this mad harmonic wobble in my but from like 6k down to 4k. Thank you for your video as this is exactly what I'm experiencing now.
My mini had failed like this, it vibrated and made a racket for a while but quieted down enough to be able to drive it. Clutch and single mass conversion will be here soon and I'll do the install.
I had this on my old 2002 Mondy TDCi 130. It was rattling like a Jeremy Hunt at idle and like this one, the bolt holes were pissed. I replaced it with a Trannyparts solid fly and a new Valeo clutch and had no further issues during my ownership 👍👍👍
Hi Alan, Relatively new view from Aus here and loving the vids and information on MK5 mondeos. They've been really helpful after picking up a 2.0 diesel wagon(estate) down here earlier this year! While it's been fairly smooth sailing so far, just a timing belt and some headlight globe changes which you're vids did help with, there has been a recent coolant leaking problem that I am struggling to track down. Best I can describe the problem is, it's only when the car is up to running temperature. There is a rather strong smell of coolant around the car but I just cannot find the leak. I do get a coolant smell inside the cabin but only when the fresh air vents are open. On recirc there is little to no coolant smell inside the car. The rate of coolant loss is fairly slow. Goes from max to min on the overflow bottle over the coarse of about a month depending on how much driving is done and as for visually looking for it I've yet to be able to find any evidence of a leak apart from a tiny bit of staining on the sound shielding on the firewall behind the turbo near but not quite next to the heater hoses. I also had the system leak tested at its last service and they found no drop in pressure when not at running temps. Any suggestions on where to look would be fantastic! Also, an idea for the common oil leak at the diesel pump. Does removing the intermediate housing and machining a groove in the oil port for an o-ring seal sound like a more permanent fix than a new gasket every 60k miles? Keep up the great work!
hello, the main places your engine will leak from is the thermostat housing ..the egr valve, the water pump and the main radiator...look down the sides of the rad where the core joins onto the end cases...you can see them through the radiator fan. as for the oil leak best thing is to fit new gaskets with a tiny smear of sealant on the intermediate housing gasket
hi guys not sure if this is my issue, similar vibration as shown here but only at 1500 revs, haver changed all engine mounts on car not resolved and it stops when engine is jacked up slightly. any ideas be appreciated, it happens at stationary and also driving
What was wrong with the springs on the friction plate worked great years and cheaper to change, now this duel mass crap i heard its £500 just for the parts. Brilliant video Alan cheers.
the flywheel takes out a lot of the engine torque and gives a smooth drive through to the gearbox which i am guessing with a conventual clutch would be too harsh for the amount of torque in these engines but hey ho lol, cheers charles
a guy did a solid flywheel conversion on his mk3 2l diesel at our garage,,, within 2 weeks he wanted it back to a dual mass as the vibration and harshness of the drive was too much for him to live with so i thinking it best to stick to the duel mass flywheel for smooth clutch changes and a smooth ride
Hi Alan, if by any chance you see this comment, my dad has a strange issue on his Mondeo mk5 110kw automatic gearbox. The car is heavily vibrating in all gears but only in automatic mode. When he puts it in sport mode and uses the paddles to shift, the car works totally fine. Any idea/tip what could be the problem or where to look?
Thanks Alan, short, but interesting information for us that haven't yet had the pleasure of seeing one. What are the early signs that these are starting to fail?
hi stevie, usually you will hear a rattling noise under the bonnet..it can be quite a heavy rattling noise..if you put your clutch pedal down half way with the engine idling and you are sitting in the car with all your windows up you will hear the rattle if it is failing
Loving the videos, really helpful! Any idea what might cause clutch judder in a 2016 smax? Its fine when cold or motorway miles, but under heavy use in traffic i get judder through the clutch pedal. Revving it harder reduces the judder. Could it be clutch on the way out, or flywheel?
@@alan4x Thanks for the reply, really helpful. Hopefully it is the clutch springs, i think i feel it through the pedal and also through the car would be better explanation. Im planning a clutch change soon as its at 70,000 miles. Also massive thanks for the ESC service required video, helped me out to no end!
Hi Alan, Thanks for all the videos, learned a lot from your channel. I've been having similar vibration issues for almost a year now, on my Mk5, 2.0 diesel, Powershift. But no rattling noise almost at all, just vibrations felt on the chassis and through the cabin (steering wheel, seats, dashboard) Interesting thing is that vibrations occasionally disappear during driving, and after few moments or minutes come back again. Do you think this can be due to failing dual mass flywheel? And how failing flywheel can affect the automatic gearbox? Cheers and greetings from Serbia!!
hey, So i'm now having simmilar issue. Or almost exactly same issue as you did, but mine vibrate coninuously on higher speeds, like 60 kmph and above. So how did you solve this problem ? what was the issue ?
@@xpertvis hi, the issue is still present, and still looking for the cause and solution. Did you check tires, or are the wheels balanced properly? This could be causing vibrations on higher speeds.
Hi Alan :) If you don't mind me asking, how much would this job set someone back if they are thinking about doing it (for peace of mind)? My car is a 2015 Mk5 2.0 with 126k miles and whilst it still drives spot on, I suspect the clutch and flywheel will need doing. Also, because you have the experience, would this type of job be something that I could book in with you guys when the time comes? Love your content and keep up the good work, hope you're doing well.
hi pinter, if you use genuine ford clutch kit and flywheel..well, supplied from ford you would be looking at the best part of £1000-£1200 to have that job done, can get flywheels cheaper from motor factors but i would recommend getting the clutch and slave cylinder from ford
Hi I have same car same engine My problem is after 30 min of driving the shifts move more difficult and the 1,2,3 gearbox hangs what problems can be Please I have 120 k miles On cold work perfect also with the engine stop go nice to all gears
Alan Howatt, I am struggling to get a clutch kit with flywheel for my Mondeo Mk5 2015, 2.0 Diesel 180hp. Can you please direct me to a website that can supply me these. I live in Scotland. Absolutely love your Humour and you and Monica are a fantastic team. Cheers Mate. If anyone else can help, this would be greatly appreciated.
I also had to replace my dual mass flywheel in the mk5 I had. It was an automatic gearbox and when left on neutral, the car was slowly moving forward. The mileage was around 120k km. on that car. When I put the car in drive you could hear like a "knocking" noise especially going uphill and starting.
@@wazzyboy7661 Yes - unfortunately I didn't realize that this was a problem with the dual mass. I thought it's just a typical diesel engine during a cold winter. Once this got fixed the rev counter became stable.
@@mikofi thanks for the reply, my dmf is clattering and will get replaced either today or tomorrow, my mechanic said once its replaced my rev needle will stabilize.
I look with horror at this flywheel knowing that my car, an 2011 facelift Mondeo mk4 has 250k km and it's still the factory one. Most probably soon I will have to change it also. Until now no rattling or unusual vibrations but I think that I'm on borrowed time. Car has done 70% of the km on the highway, maybe that is why it's still ok.
@@alan4x I know, I have seen it and made me worry, but this one is a little scarier with the bolts not aligned with the holes. I imagine next year how my mechanic will curse and swear as he will have to cut with the grinder the dmf. Anyway always a pleasure to watch your videos. I have learned a lot.
Terrible idea. Cars with a single mass flywheel have a small dampener in the clutch itself and the bearings in the gearbox and designed to handle the extra vibrations. That stuff just isn't necessary with a dual mass flywheel. You would slowly destroy your gearbox. It also lasts 160k miles in a taxi. It's not cheap to replace but you will survive that given the extra comfort it gives.
@@TheMcooper17 Hang on. I might be confused about this. Are you suggesting we put dual mass flywheels in to cars that come with a single mass from the factory? Or are you talking about putting a single mass flywheel into a car that should have a dual mass?
@@TheMcooper17 No confusion then. You shouldn't do. Dual mass flywheels absorb drivetrain shock and that means you can make the rest of the components less sturdy. If you take away the dual mass flywheel the rest of the stuff won't last long. These things are good for you unless they fail. But they last a long time and the cost of replacing one isn't that bad considering their service life.
I assume they are built to have a good service life for 3 years ( normally usage / domestic ) so not to be repaired under warranty ... then the customer trades in again for a newer model You would have thought they would have come up with a better solution to refix this expensive time consuming pile of scrap Oh well ........... add it to the pile
Time to get the grinder out Alan , modern clutches are 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩, so much cost to change for the punter, they think we are robbing them 😂😂😂, and of course you work for free with it being a fleet car so no charge to the driver , including in the rental costs
@@alan4x done plenty VW models that have spun like that , have you ever changed a vw transporter clutch when the dual mass springs have come out of the flywheel and then you get a perfectly cut open bell housing and about 300 spring washers , plenty pennies they are 😂😂👍👍
Duel mass load of shit why oh why what is the point my old diesels never had em they run smooth Peugeot 1.9 TD Rover 45 2.0 many many more .it seems to me car makes try there hardest to make thing shit so you have to pay a load of cash out bearing hubs for start 10quid bearing is now a 80 quid Plus bearing hub
