I built this forklift modification to lift a roof top tent off of a friend's Tahoe or Denali or whatever it is. He saw someone build an extension for the boom on one of these folding engine hoists. I came up with a slightly different solution.
The video shows us using it before I made a few more changes. At one point, I thought about adding a lever to tilt the forks back. There was a lot of discussion about extending the front legs or adding weight to counter balance the 200 pound load. In the end, it worked pretty well the it was.
I posted a brief video of it on my Instagram account and it that clip got something like 1 million views in less than a week. A lot of questions in the comments there. For example; no, it will not lift the front of your truck.
Anyway, enjoy the video. Leave a comment. Give it a like.
You know what to do.
Cheers!

That is the exact design I am looking for to use for my two hard tops. The articulation for a level ascent and descent is perfect. Thank You

Add a long boom on the other side with counter weight then you got yourself a skyscraper crane.

Weld a piece of 2" tube on the back so you can put it in your receiver hitch and rent it to all the "overlanders" within a 50 mile radius.

I think you forged something in this video! Could you add a turnbuckle to adjust the angle of the forks?
@JustinJennings

I could. Originally, I was going to build a lever to pull that would tilt it back. I could also have put a threaded rod rod with a crank that would allow more granular adjustment and tilt while using it. But, in the end, it worked for the client, and he took it the way it was finished. If he's happy, I'm happy.

How heavy of a load do you think you could lift with it without it wanting to tip?
@JustinJennings
@JustinJennings Год назад
I'd extend the legs or put some counterweight on it before adding too much. The tent we lifted is about 200 pounds. It was surprisingly stable. But, sudden moves might scare it.

Do you think I could get away with a 1 ton engine hoist or should it be 2?
@JustinJennings
@JustinJennings 3 месяца назад
Well, you'd have to do your own math. But, 1 ton is still 2000 pounds and those tent's don't weigh much.

Hi - can you please share the measurements and type of metal you used for the modifications of the hoist so I can replicate?
@JustinJennings

It's just mild steel. The "forks" are just 1" x 3" x 0.120" HSS. As for dimensions, I don't remember really. It was built for one job. In this case, it only needed to lift that roof top tent off of the vehicle and later lift it back on to the vehicle. I can only assume your specific needs would be different.
