One thing Ray has taught me is how unbelievable it is that a regular car can take me to work and back without a failure like three years in a row. A thousand round trips. So many things could go wrong but they don't. Modern cars are a miracle.

If you think modern cars are a miracle..... you should see how easy things were back in the 50s/60s/70s. Lol. Sometimes I think modern cars just being on the road and lasting 50k miles is a miracle in itself. Unless of course that's what you meant by that comment. If that's the case, then yes, I absolutely agree

So today I just replaced both cats on my subaru impreza. Did this up on jack stands in my dirt driveway in 36 degree wet weather up here in upstate NY. Needless to say it took way longer than a job like it should have due to the conditions. I would just like to say that because of your videos, and the attitude you have and your sense of humor, I had a completely different attitude when I dropped a wrench or something wasn't going right. There were many times I found myself joking about the rusted bolts that weren't cooperating or saying "gravity" to myself instead of cursing and hating my life during said repair. Thank you for your videos! They have had more of an impact on me than I realized. LOL

A good toothbrush is the perfect tool for cleaning carbon out of throttle bodies. I have one in my toolbox that I have used many, many times for just this purpose. Learned this trick years ago when the early V6's & V8's went from carburetors over to fuel injection w/throttle bodies and they would get to where they did not want to idle properly. A toothbrush with a little WD40 on it would clean them right up and solve the idle problem.
@justincredible5406
@justincredible5406 2 года назад
Nooo, don't use WD-40. There is carburator cleaner for those sorts of applications you want to be absolutely sure you don't leave anything gunky. A lint-free workshop towel should do the trick to wipe away all the shite.

@wwdiesel
@wwdiesel 2 года назад
@@justincredible5406 But just like he stated and shown in the video, some throttle bodies have a special coating on the inside of the throttle bore and you are not supposed to use harsh cleaners like carburetor or brake cleaners. He used spray penetrating oil to clean the carbon out. In the marine and small engine world, many people use WD40 to start 2 cycle engines on after a rebuild due to it very good lubricating properties.

Man, you are awesome. I wish I had access to a mechanic 1/2 as good as you, where I live. You are so conscientious about what you do. Recently a local mechanic changed out the bearing on the front of our FX35 and [poof] the ABS sensor failed. For about $200 they'd squeeze it in 3 days later for a replacement. $600 into the bearing and $200 for a sensor ... i'm feeling like a cow being milked. I tend to think they didn't remove the sensor then broke it removing the hub, but won't of course say that. Just know, many people watching know you are awesome.

That was my fix on my 2003 Trailblazer, had very little buildup, looked 'normal' to me. I cleaned it figuring it would fix nothing, fixed my trouble code and ran smooth. I was shocked that it doesn't take much. I soaked it in Seafoam, then used a old cotton sock on my hand and Seafoam to finish the job as the trailblazer DOES have the coating. Removing the coating will cause you to buy a new one. Happened at around 120k. 45k and 8 years or so later, never had the issue again.

On the second vehicle.... I LOL'd when I saw the torn up air filter. I've seen that a couple times in the past because I know someone who never changed their air filter from the day they got the car, the original filter was ripped apart and sucked into the chamber just like that. He asked me how that can happen, I told them several things can cause that but first and foremost, you need to at the very least look at it when you change the oil, it's called maintenance. Secondly it was the factory filter and they don't always use the best quality filters with the understanding it will be changed at least once within 10,ooo miles, or whatever is recommended in the owners manual (Which he never read). Once it was removed and vacated from the chamber, the car, ran obviously much better. The second person who had that was my dad (84 years old), had no idea how to maintain a vehicle engine and never changed an air filter, but that's another story. "Click"

My impression is that factory parts are the most durable, long-lasting parts that exist, with the intent of minimizing potential warranty claims-for example, spark plugs and brake pads. Those iridium plugs and brake pads typically go for 60,000km or more, outlasting the warranty period. Obviously filters cannot last that long so maybe you're right on that front, but I do find the dealer air filters seem much more substantial than aftermarket ones. On a more paranoid note, I sometimes wonder if so-called OEM replacement parts from the dealer are _really_ identical to what was installed from the factory. My experience with GM products is that while factory-installed brake pads may last over 60,000km, new ones installed at the dealership last only 20-30,000km before grinding out the rotors (without any warning I might add). Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm crazy. I don't know. shrug

I've seen some of the aftermarket filters on some of the Ford 6.7's get gobbled up. They did reinforce the screen backs with a little stiffer screen and some enhanced stamped ridging. Sometimes though the best filter is the manufacturer's.

Most likely cleaning the intake caused the Map sensor failure. A lot of cleaners are not Map sensor safe. It is important to use a Map sensor safe cleaner. Fuel additives do not need to be Map sensor safe. Since they wouldn't make contact with the Map sensor. Under normal use. They would go through the fuel injection. The fuel injection is after the Map sensor. God bless
@BixbyConsequence
@BixbyConsequence 2 года назад
I would have tried cleaning the sensor. May have still been oily from the penetrating oil. That's the problem with using non-evaporating oil as a throttle body cleaner. Even if it doesn't mess up the MAP sensor right away, it can leave a residue on the sensor that will attract dirt. This happens with the oil-impregnated K&N filters also.
@alanm.4298
@alanm.4298 2 года назад
I think you folks are thinking of the MAF or "mass air flow" sensor, which has the heated wire element, sits upstream from the throttle body and needs to be cleaned very carefully, never touched directly, only cleaned by spraying with the correct type of cleaner. Excess oil on K&N filters can foul those. In this case the MAP or "manifold absolute pressure" sensor is downstream from the throttle body so likely gets subjected to oil mist from crankcase ventilation all the time, or whatever other gunk it is building up on and behind the throttle body. Yes, it might have been possible to clean it, too... However it should have been pretty thoroughly cleaned by the de-carboning process Ray did to the engine. In the end, a MAP sensor is probably pretty cheap to replace, where a MAF is often pretty expensive.
@thomasdesmond2248
@thomasdesmond2248 2 года назад
@@alanm.4298 no the wrong cleaner can cause issues with a Map sensor as well. I learned the hard way on a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. Not saying the sensor was expensive. In my 2010 milan which I do not have any more, I was driving one day, and I was on the gas pretty good, when all of a sudden the power died, and the engine had no power. I pulled off the road, and it stalled. I waited a moment and then tried to start it. It started fine. Gave it a little gas. it was okay. Gave it more gas and boom, no power. Had triple A tow it back to my home, which was only 10 minutes away. Next day I go out and pull the air box off, because to me it was like the engine was starving for air. and in the bottom of the air box was a rubber cap, that goes on the back of the head light housing. !?... The engine literally sucked the cap off of the back of the head light some how, or maybe it was loose and fell off, I don't know, but it got sucked in and plugged the hole inside the air box suffocating the engine. When I shut the car off, the cap would fall. Then not block the intake hole. But when it sucked hard, it pulled it right up and blocked the hole. It was interesting none the less.

With direct injection carbon build up (coking) is worse than ever, so really a catch 22. You have to clean the build up, but run the risk of damaging some components by doing so, particularly the hot wire on the MAF. Our guys were instructed to run it into the rail/throttle body, and never onto the MAF, by the chemical company trainers, for that reason. Happy wrenching!

For those who don't know, Hydro locking a cylinder happens a lot in top fuel dragsters. Why? in most cars (including most race cars) the fuel is atomized before compression. It's in a gas state and can be compressed. nitromethane (the fuel used in top fuelers) is pumped in by injector but always wants to go back to a liquid far more than other fuels. (it's far more complicated than that, nitromethane does a lot of things in the cylinder, one of those is it acts like diesel fuel. It can and does go off with heat and compression which is why top fuel dragster plugs stop working about half way into the run. They are basically burned off on the electrode by the time you half way down the track, at that point it's compression and heat that is keeping the engine running and yes it can and will hydro lock at that point) If you want to see what that damage looks like, i'm sure their are youtube vids on it. It's violent and nasty. Liquids will NOT compress and something has to give. Usually it's a rod. That means a hole in the block..... God i miss racing!
