It was time to change the engine oil , so far I did it at the Kawasaki dealer because the motorcycle was under a 2-year warranty. The warranty is over and now I can do it my way.Enjoy and ride safe.

Sorry I was critical of your video, after further looking on RU-vid yours is actually the best and most straightforward video there is! Thank you

Just did my first oil change on the Versys. I used the 'burping' technique, and it worked a treat. This how I did it. Swapped oil filter. Refitted sump plug with fresh washer. Filled with fresh oil to max line. Fitted oil filter just tight enough to seal. With my hand on the oil filter, I got someone to start my bike and shut it off on my command. I slackened the oil filter until it squirted a bit of oil,and shut it of quick, literally takes a second. Fully tightened filter, topped up oil level restarted and no warning light ☺️ You could do it with out help, but I chose to have someone start and stop the bike so I could focus on letting just a tiny amount of oil squirt from the filter. Hope this helps someone. Ride safe🤘

I've changed the oil in my Versys 5 or 6 times now. On my most recent change, the oil pressure warning light would not go off. I shut the bike down and restarted it 2 or 3 times then got worried. I looked around on the forums and it seems to be a common issue, solved by "burping" the oil filter which means loosening it to let pressure out. I tried this and restarted the bike, and the light immediately went off. Several other forum members said they prevent the build up of pressure by refilling the engine oil before putting the new oil filter on. The sump is lower than the filter, so the oil won't run out the filter area. I've always done things in the order that you did, but I'm due for another oil change soon and will try the refill before installing the filter method this time to see if that works.

@MotoAndy 4 года назад
I also noticed it, on the video you can clearly see that before the light went out it took a few seconds, that's why I turned off and on the engine several times.
@sweatmachine69
@sweatmachine69 4 года назад
MotoAndy I noticed that in your video. I let mine run for a little longer than you did the first time (maybe 10-15 seconds) then noticed the light was still on. I was pretty worried at first, but it’s been fine ever since. Concerning to say the least. Also, I pre fill my oil filter as much as possible. Not sure if that helps or not. Figure it can’t hurt.
@rontyros5894
@rontyros5894 4 года назад
It is normal that the oil light stays on for a while because the filter is filled at the first start, but it is a scary feeling :-) If you fill the filter in advance, you create an air bubble and it takes too long for the light to go out, I speak from experience. The workshop manual states that the oil filter must be tightened to 17 nm and that you should not do this by hand because it is too loose. This is not a commentary on Andy because his videos are fun and educational to watch. Best regards, Ron.
@sweatmachine69
@sweatmachine69 4 года назад
Ron Tyros thanks for your input. I didn’t pre-fill my filter the first few times and I never had this issue. Next time I’ll install it empty and hopefully not have the extended light on again.
@MotoAndy
@MotoAndy 4 года назад
@@rontyros5894 I always broke things off tightening with my hands, I just have too much strength in my hands so I'm sure the filter is tightened to more than 17nm 🤣🤣 thanks for your input, best regards and ride safe.🙂

Hi, thanks for the video. You don't need to oil the filter anymore, there is already something on it, it's why it's packed in a plastic bag (it(s not a problem to put more :D). I'd rather use a dyno key for the drain plug, the tork is 29Nm. The tork for the oil filter is17 Nm, but I screw it your by hand

I have always had to burp my oil filter. First time the light never went out after 2-3 seconds. Tried restarting a few times as in this video but light didn’t go out like in this video. Dis some online searches and discovered the “burp” technique. Kind of crazy but it works every time now. Done 8 oil changes since 2015

I change the oil cold. Drop the oil out, leave it overnight. No scalded fingers etc. Also pre fill the filter before installation. No 'burping' needed.

Should I let it warm up for a little bit before changing the oil? I was just gonna do it cold so I don’t have to worry about burning my fingers.

I have to burp my Versys 1000. The light takes way to ling to go out otherwise. I leave the oil filter very loose, start the engine, and quickly unscrew the filter enough to allow a splash of oil to come out and I instantly tighten the filter and the light goes out immediately. It was not going out in a time frame that it should have so I tried what I said (burp the engine) and it works well. I do it every time now and the light never stays on for more than 2 to 3 seconds. You warmed the engine before you did the oil change? Anyway, great video.

I’m at the auto parts store looking for a rubber gasket for the drain plug screw/bolt. I’m looking at the picture from your video when you took out the drain plug. There is no rubber gasket attached to it, and there’s not one attached to mine do I still need to put some rubber gasket on of some sort?

You installed the oil filter wrong, you should never back the filter off 1/4 turn. Where the hell did you get that info???
@MotoAndy
@MotoAndy 2 года назад
And whats wrong about that?
@yvonjasser
@yvonjasser 2 года назад
@@MotoAndy you asking me what is wrong with a loose filter
@MotoAndy
@MotoAndy 2 года назад
@@yvonjasser by retracting the filter (about) 1/4 turn, you release the pinch on the filter gasket that occurs when tightening it. The filter is not loose after so little retraction. I have been replacing filters on my cars and motorcycles for over 20 years, none of my filters have unscrewed, loosened, leaking or puffed in air. With the next replacement, I always have to use the filter wrench as it is impossible to unscrew it with my hands. So to answer your question, where the hell did I get that info, nowhere, I know it from my own experience. Of course, you can disagree with my opinion and you have the right to do so, I can only assure you that if you do everything correctly, you will not have any problems with this method of changing the oil filter. Stay safe.
@yvonjasser
@yvonjasser 2 года назад
@@MotoAndy I understand that you never had a problem, but that is anecdotal and doesn’t prove anything. Every mechanics, every manuals, everyone I know who works on vehicles do not recommend what you are doing. Fine if you want to do it on your vehicle, but don’t recommend that to others in a tutorial video.
@MotoAndy

@@yvonjasser I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. This video is not "how it's done" tutorial, it only shows how I change the oil on MY Kawasaki Versys 1000, and you have no obligation to do the same on your bike.

Please explain why you tighten the filter, then loosen it 1/4 turn. Ive been screwing on oil filters for 50 yrs and never seen that done.
@MotoAndy
@MotoAndy 6 месяцев назад
To reduce the tension of the filter rubber seal that occurs when tightening it, it does not have to be 1/4 turn, 1 mm is enough. Of course, this is my way of installing the filter, if you think otherwise, you are absolutely entitled to do so. Stay safe
@patdennis3751
@patdennis3751 6 месяцев назад
OK. Maybe I'll try that technique in the future. Have you ever had an issue with the system being slow to prime after a filter change? Some say it needs to have the air purged by loosening the filter momentarily after starting to get oil pressure quickly.

@MotoAndy Год назад
Thanks man. Well, as you said, it's an old debate and there are as many opinions on it as there are people on this earth, so I'm sure whatever I write, someone will have a different opinion. I have nothing against mineral oils, but for my motorcycle I would choose at least semi-synthetic or synthetic oil, and anticipating your "why" question, I'll answer diplomatically "why not". Thanks for watching my videos, good luck with your oil change, whichever you choose, and of course stay safe...

Nice video with a good overview to all necessary steps. But why do you start the engine three times after the oil change? It‘s really just a matter of „filling“ all the oil channels again in order to be able to read the correct oil level in the sight glass, isn‘t it? Best regards, Peter

I was at official kawasaki service before 2 weeks. i have Versys 650 2018 model, and service man fill every time motorex semi sintetic (15W50 - for Versys 650). i ask why don't use full sintetic, he say that is for oil for racing, and it is chage more often that semi sintetic, basicaly after every track race. Also he mention that don't use JASO MA2 - latest generation of oil, because motorbike start to have problems with that oil. That is reason why he use Motorex 15W50 because it is JASO MA grade.

If you have a wet sump engine, you do not need to warm the engine. That way all the oil is allready at the bottom instead of spread all over your internals.
