Highly likely is has the AH rockers from new, and wont ever get the tick. Nor would you do anything about it until I developed symptoms. If you like, get in the habit of cutting open old oil filters and looking for metal. I have a recent Pentastar Tick video that lays all of this out.

Hard to say exactly because it was during the 'Rona, but best we can tell the AH rockers hit the market very late 2019. I would guess any model year 20 and newer would have them.

@@alexanderkasyanov4946 Less of a knocking, more of a tapping like a typewriter. You will have the sound first, and it will stay code free for 20k or more miles. Eventually you will get a code for a single cylinder misfire (P0301, P0302, etc). It will run fine for perhaps 10k more. Once the misfires become bad enough, the light will be flashing, and you'll feel it misfiring under load in high gear (highway cruise). It will feel like you are running over rumble strips. You'll find you can put it in 5th gear and it will rev high enough not to misfire so badly, but by then the die is cast and you'll have to address it. The fix is new rocker arms, and replacing any cams that are wiped. The sooner you catch it, the less likely you are to need cams.

Btw, my 2 cents in “what to look for in RAM promasters” is the column a door is bolted onto, specifically the area of the column where the door swing stopper attaches. Apparently it’s a week point and I have cracks on 2 of my vans.

@@alexanderkasyanov4946 Very true. There is a dealer fix available for the door check strap, or you can fabricate your own. Super common problem.

Funny you mention it, twice now I have offered that to customers, but it never happened. I've never done it before, but I'm fairly certain it could be done. What you would need is a complete parts van, which I have! Two years ago I bought a wrecked gas van for the body parts, but it has an ECU and BCM, and all the harnesses. If you have to buy all that stuff from the dealer, you are screwed because it's crazy expensive, but if you can get it all in one place I'm 90% confident it could be done without too much trouble. At the time, I quoted $12,000 for such a service, including all parts and labor. But if I were asked today I might hesitate to do it. It's not the price, it's the time - I'm already working 7 days a week and taking on a giant project like that is daunting. There are other ways, possibly more cost effective ways, to accomplish the same thing, which is ditch the diesel and get back on the road. If you were willing to do a stand-alone engine computer, I might (might) be able to reprogram the BCM to ignore the fact that it doesn't see an engine. That's important because the locks, the gauges, the heater, the lights, the airbags, EVERYTHING is controlled by the BCM, and if the BCM freaks out none of that stuff will work. Assuming it does work or I could make it work, you could use any engine that came with the 62TE transmission. That would include the pentastars, the older crappier 3.8, but would also include the 2.4L SRT 4 turbo engine, which would be the right choice I think. It would also open up a world of possibilities for converting to RWD. I'm pretty sure and LS engine would fit. Fun stuff to think about.

The figure that I keep seeing dealers sodinze customers with is $13,000 installed. Odd, because that particular permutation of enginr isnt being made anymore, so where are they getting these engines? I believe you can get a Jasper long block for about $3k. But there will be assload of assembly to get to the point where you can plop it in. But if you are willing to do the rockers as I outlined, you can find engines as low as $1000. The engine you see in this video is actually another 3.2 like you saw in the Kip Swap video. I got that engine from LKQ for $350! Insanely cheap. They make 1 million of the damn things every year.

The rockers you want end in 296AH. Not sure the p/n of the oil seals - whatever is newest. I had not heard that the rear pipe had been upgraded, but it’s great if so.

@@ClayGump If I did that, I'd be forced to clean the bathroom at the shop. We are going for "period correct" gas station bathroom, and that would spoil the "patina."

The vans are pretty basic, and the motor is stupid reliable once you address those two flaws. Even more reliable/cost effective than a P pumped Cummins, as bold a claim as that is to make. I can buy a whole engine for what you’d pay in Cummins just to clean and test the injectors. That said, 500k is common out of the Pentastar, assuming you address the tick.
