Engine & Transmission Mounts Replacement - Toyota Camry

This video will show you how to replace the engine and transmission mounts on a 2003 Toyota Camry with the 2AZ-FE I4 engine. The mount layout design for this Camry is also shared with the Toyota Avalon, Venza, Sienna, RAV4, Highlander and Lexus ES330 / ES350. Mount replacement on Toyota's 2GR-FE can be found here: • Toyota / Lexus Engine ... The four replacement mounts were part of a complete replacement kit. The replacement of these parts require no special tools outside of jack stands and a hydraulic jack.
Engine and transmission mounts will exhibit signs of wear when a clunking sound or rattling noise is noticed during acceleration from a dead stop (engine torque pulling on the front worn out mount), the torque rod bushings being broken or excessive vibration while driving the car. The front motor mount takes the most stress. Simple test: With the hood open and the engine running, have someone observe the engine (looking at it from the side of the car). Place the transmission in drive, use your left foot to apply the brakes (also use the parking brakes) and rev the engine with your right foot. If your partner sees the engine tilting up a lot during the rev up, the front mount is considered shot. It's normal for it to tilt a little but not a lot. If the front mount is really bad, the sides are probably stressed out as well to compensate for the worn out front mount. Also, worn mounts will place stress on your exhaust down pipe and could wear out its flex pipe resulting in exhaust leaks and noise.
Torque Specs:
1. Upper engine movement torque strut: 47 lbs
2. Driver side transmission mount nuts: 70 lbs
3. Passenger side lower motor mount nuts: 70 lbs
4. Front side motor mount bolt: 64 lbs

I had to replace the control arms on an 06 solara following your videos and the mounts took the longest to accomplish because of the lower clearance on the solara. The solution that worked was to lower the subframe some while jacking up the pan. Took me 2 days to accomplish this for the first time but now I learned something. Thanks again for your videos.

@@dankam830 OEM is a nice-to-have with a limited warranty period ... MOOG, on the other hand, gives you a lifetime warranty on most parts. If you're referring to the front mount (by the radiator), keep the lower mount's studs loose while slowly lowering the engine onto the new mount. When low enough, screw in the upper mount's bolt then let the engine completely rest on the mount and tighten everything up.

Thanks for putting this video together. It's clear enough to do the job. Just a couple of minor comments. It appears the torque strut you replaced was not original. The original torque strut should have had rubber covers on the front-most part of the strut. For those who are replacing this part, you should put the two covers from the original strut onto your replacement strut since they serve as a damper for the strut. If you don't, at times when the strut twists, it will hit against the metal mounting bracket. Those covers will ensure the metal-to-metal rubbing doesn't happen. Lastly, providing the torque specs would have been helpful. Overall though, this is a very helpful video. So, thanks again.

The best points to install the jack stands is on the rail that runs along both side of the car's chassis. The lifting of the engine and transmission via the oil pans is to tilt the engine or trans high enough to remove the mounts.

The front motor mount takes the most stress. With the hood open and the engine running, have someone observe the engine (looking at it from the side of the car).

When you went back and put the dust boot on the passenger side engine mount, did your new mount come with a boot or did you switch it from the old mount? On mine, the dust boot was missing from the old mount and the new did not come with one. I have done a short search and no luck on just the boot. I have looked at other sellers of the mount kit and that mount doesn't come with a boot. Any suggestions?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 4 года назад
No ... the new mounts didn't come with new boots and had to swap with the old mount ... from my recollection. I wouldn't be too overly concerned about not have a boot. If you're worried about moisture or oil debris getting in, you can protect it with a coating of Permetex RTV rubber sealant.

Thanks for an awesome video. Where did you jack the engine up on? It looks like you put a piece of wood on the floor jack and jacked on the oil pan. Did the pan bend or get crushed? I gotta do a lwer control arm replacement on a 2005 Toyota Avalon and the both engine mounts 1 bolt of the control arm in under the engine mount. Thanks

Thanks for your post. You won't have to worry about collapsing the transmission or engine oil pans as long as you place a wood block between the pan and jack that is at least the length of any side of the oil pan. This distributes the jack's tension evenly on the pan. As a alternative, you can use engine/transmission traverse support bar. Here's a sample link to the tool: amzn.to/3exhLRC

Hello so my 2011 camry hybrid just started shaking vigorously on the right side and im just wondering if that's a sign of a shot mount any input would be greatly appreciated
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 2 года назад
If shaking at a full stop ... then could be a mount. If during motion, could be wheel/tire, lower control arm, tie rod end or ball joint.

About to tackle this job. I have an 02 camry and they all need to be replaced. Oem parts seem pretty steep and im wondering what your thoughts are on aftermarkets mounts and any good alternative to oem toyota? Can i get away with aftermarket on any of the mounts? Are any crucial to keep oem?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro Месяц назад
Can't really give an opinion on aftermarkets. Only replaced a few of these in extremely high mileage Camry's with no customer feedback.

My GUY! I watched you for the first time about a year ago about how to change the timing belt, idler pulley, and tensioner pulley. You are so masterful getting thing done where I would be cussing up a storm bring stalemated. Question:. I have an audible clunk going Park to Drive or Drive to Reverse or Reverse to Drive. I do not see the motor moving much when I had my sister give it the gas with foot in brake while the Dollars was in gear. I am assuming, 21 years old and 174k miles that there is slop in the final drive. I do not hear clicking from the halfshafts. So how is one to tell if the motor mounts require servicing?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 года назад
Thanks! If a clicking sound, it may be worn brake pad abutment clips allowing the ears of your brake pads to shift inside your brake caliper bracket. A clunk may be worn transmission friction plates.
@michaeldunagan7838
@michaeldunagan7838 3 года назад
@@hardlymovingpro I had breaks done 500 miles ago. I think transmission slop is the issue. I kinda recognize the clunk when I drove my ancient rear wheel drive vehicles. Mounts can cause it too. GM differentials 1995-2010 in vans, my Astro, and pickups S-10 were notoriously under strength and rarely lasted the life of the vehicle (I needed a pinion bearing at least).
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 года назад
@@michaeldunagan7838 I've seen a lot of brake jobs done by hole in wall shops where the abutment clips were not changed out. RWD cars are a different animal. FWD have no U joints to wear out but the cv bearings and cages can. Not a lot of cost and effort to replace the front engine mount as a start.

Anywhere. Just a wood block wide enough to transfer and distribute the lifting force from the floor jack.
