Criticism: the phrase “semi-automatic” appears only once in this entire video. This may seem like a nitpick, but lots of people don’t actually understand automatic vs semi-automatic, and think the AR-15 is a “machine gun”. Others simply don’t care about the terminology. This video also overlooks the nature of legislation which has been aimed to outlaw the AR-15, such as the Assault Weapons Ban, which targeted features like collapsible stocks, curved magazines, scopes, or barrel shrouds, which make a weapon look “military-like”, but don’t actually alter a weapon’s net lethality. Other than that, good job on remaining neutral.

Semi-automatic doesn't need to be mentioned any more often than it was. Trace made it perfectly clear that the gun is so modular that whatever you think it is or can do does not apply to all variants. Being automatic is one of such things. The video also doesn't overlook the nature of legislation, because it explicitly goes over the fact _why_ it's too complicated to do so. Remember, this video is targeted toward people who don't understand enough from either political side. It's not meant to be the memoirs of this family of guns. If Trace went over all the details you want him to talk about, this would go on for another 20 minutes without really telling people anything else useful. To be clear, I'm not saying these things aren't worth looking into, but they're outside of the scope of this video.

Peter Schmidt kinda agree and disagree with you there. All ar-15 bought from a FFL gun shop are semi auto that's how probably 93% of people keep their ar-15s the other 5% add bolt action uppers and the other 2% either legally own an automatic or have modified their ar-15 illegally. So I think it is worth mentioning that the mass majority are semi auto. And explained what semi auto is instead of leaving it up to the imagination of people who could easily be swayed into thinking semiauto and fullauto are the same

They should of told you the actual meaning of AR-15, it's not an Assault Rifle 15, it's an Armalite Rifle 15. Dude never even mentions the most common misconception about the AR-15, and then goes on to talk about how confusing the topic is; maybe he should clear some of the confusion by explaining this. And all the guns he mentioned are fully automatic except the AR-15, sure they are a family of guns; but the AR-15 is the black sheep of the family. There are so many opinionated people, who have little to no knowledge on guns, for instance people wanting to ban, curved magazines, collapsible stocks and barrel shrouds. These attachments do dog-shit when it comes to an "assault", the only reason they want to ban them is because it makes the gun look scary. We shouldn't discuss fully automatic weapons, because two federal laws have essentially banned them in the United States. So, why do fully automatic weapons keep coming up in conversations?

4:11 there is no way someone 3d printed an entire AR-15. There are some parts that need to be metal.
@LawlessNate
@LawlessNate 5 лет назад
They probably 3d printed a lower receiver, the part that's legally considered the firearm. The lower receiver isn't put under much of any stress when the gun fires, so it could be made out of polymer without much issue. The barrel, bolt carrier group, buffer, and most of the springs and pints absolutely 100% need to be made of metal and therefore cannot be 3d printed at home with current technology. There are also other components which should be made of metal but theoretically could get away with being polymer, like the buffer tube and upper receiver.

Not a bad basic primer but there are errors. The HK is not really an AR, it doesn't use the same gas system but rather a piston vs the DI system. And modern gunpowder is not explosive at all; it's a propellant that burns rapidly. Black powder on the other hand is actually explosive. Virtually all modern firearms are mass produced and have interchangeable parts- this applies to the AK as well. A huge part of the popularity of the Black Rifle is modularity but there are many modular rifles. The fact the US military uses a similar rifle is a big factor.
@blaze4487
@blaze4487 6 лет назад
no. the gas directly affects the bolt carrier unlike in a piston system where the gas forces a rod into contact with the bolt carrier. the ar15 is a true direct impingement system
@seanfitzpatrick4586
@seanfitzpatrick4586 6 лет назад
Blaze this is not true. The Stoner gas system is a Pseudo-direct impingement system. A true direct impingement mechanism has a flat face that is used to seal off a gas system until enough gas pressure is achieved to overcome the force keeping the bolt carrier in battery. In the Stoner system, gas is directed into a cavity in the bolt carrier. Here, it expands and pushes on the bolt of the firearm which is designed to be a piston (compare the shape to many other piston systems, functionally the same). The gas rings on the bolt seal it and allow the pressure of the expanding gas to retain enough force to cat upon the bolt and carrier. This in turn pushes the carrier back and allows the bolt to cam and unlock from the barrel extension. The gas sealing rings, expansion chamber in the bolt carrier, and shape of the bolt tail are clear indicators that the system is gas piston operated. The distinction is clear when comparing the operating system of the AR platform with that of the Swedish Ag m/42. What Stoner did was not design a direct impingement system, far from it, but rather a way to use the bolt and carrier as the gas piston and operating rod.

Jack Wright "M16" is just the military designation for the original Armalite AR-15 assault rifle. They all literally operate and are built the exact same way. I could also take any standard 5.56/.223 M16, M4, XM177, etc etc and interchange ANY part so long as I have an AR reciever. The only thing that makes common civilian ARs different is that they dont have a 3rd pin hole for full auto parts to be installed, but that could easily change with a drill and 3/8 drill bit.

@ryanestes7331
@ryanestes7331 5 лет назад
@Andrew Hernandez alright first I never said that 9mm and 45 we're more powerful they just I'll more people each year because no one kills with an ar15. Also yes by comparison to regular rifle rounds it's difficult to find weaker calibers. Of course a .223 will split a head but it's about as powerful as a 357 mag
@ryanestes7331
@ryanestes7331 5 лет назад
@Andrew Hernandez indeed. Firearms are kinetic weapons. So the equation 1/2 mass x velocity squared applies. When calculated you will see that a fairly average 223 will inflict 1.5 million grams of Newton's out of a standard size barrel (18 plus) while a 357 will cause 1.2 million grams. Now this is why you see the heads explode: the 556 exits at a much higher velocity because of it's smaller mass. In a sense it splatters everything acrossed the back wall. However I believe that the 357 Is transferring more kinetic energy because of it's increased size and friction. I also believe that out of the same length barrels a 357 would be Superior to 223 but because lever actions are less and less common I do not believe it to be likely

You missed a BIG piece of information that is insanely misunderstood by people all over the country who don't know much about guns. This. Weapon. Is. Not. Fully. Automatic. The military's versions are, the civilian versions aren't. This weapon cannot fire faster than any other hunting rifle that isn't bolt action or shotgun or pistol. You shouldn't compare it to the military's weapons without adding in that information. Being such a large network of researchers I feel like that was intentionally left out.

This is actually a pretty unbiased video in terms of politics. I think it's important that both sides learn about the AR-15, what it's actually capable of, and how it's used. I am a supporter of the right to own and carry AR-15's, but a lot of people who scorn the rifle as an "assault weapon" really don't know what they're talking about. This video brings us toward a path where mainstream news no longer says things like "the AR-15 can fire 1000 rounds a minute" or "30 rounds magazines are high capacity." When everyone is educated on the matter, it makes for much better discourse on both sides.

I think an important thing that could have been added to this video, is some context about those estimated 5-10 million AR-type guns in the US. out of the approximately 33,000 gun deaths in the US each year(about 2/3 of which are suicides, so we'll limit this to the 10-12,000 gun homicides), only about 300 of those deaths are from rifles of any kind, and only a fraction of those 300 are from what would be considered "assault weapons". this is a tiny percentage, both of total gun deaths, and of the number of all civilian owned ARs that are ever used to kill(or in crimes in general.) contrast that to about 90,000 alcohol related deaths each year, and 40,000 deaths from _secondhand smoke alone,_ and one is forced to wonder why people are so focused on banning "assault weapons", but not alcoholic beverages or tobacco products. not only that, but even if we did ban them, what then? what laws/bans are they going to want after these mass shootings keep happening, but the pistols and shotguns(like the most recent shooting in Texas, or the Virginia tech shooting, which was the deadliest ever at the time it was carried out?) I mean, people are already talking about banning all semi-automatic guns, or even any gun capable of accepting a detachable magazine, which would be virtually all guns except most shotguns, revolvers, and some bolt/lever action rifles. this video is important, but it fails to address so much. the problem is, the people making these laws, and 95+% of the people supporting these laws(i.e. 'assault weapons' bans, or 'high capacity' magazine bans) know virtually nothing about guns, and dont what makes an AR-15 different from any other gun. they don't realize that there is no functional difference between an AR-15, and something like a ruger mini-14. it's just that one is made of wood, and the other is black and scary/tactical looking. this is why these politicians had to ban weapons based on meaningless cosmetic features(such as adjustable stocks, pistol grips, muzzle breaks/compensators, etc.), that do literally nothing to make a gun more deadly. literally all they did(and they admit this), was look at guns they thought were scary looking, and tried to find features that they had in common, and banned the possession of any gun possessing those features. so for example, like I said before, her in CT where I live, AR-15s are now illegal, but I can go into any gun store and buy a ruger mini-14, or ares SCR, or kel-tec, or any other number of guns that fire the same round as an AR, at the same rate, with the same magazines, the same barrel length, etc. in fact, I can buy even "deadlier" guns that fire more powerful rounds like an m1a1. or I can buy a shotgun(including semi-automatic shotguns) that fire rounds far more deadly than the .223/5.56 that the AR-15 is chambered in. tell me, what kind of sense does this make? it seems to me tjese laws are A. based on ignorance, and B., based on emotion, their only purpose being to abate people's fears, and make them feel better, or like they've done something.

As a gun nut, I'm surprised with this video. Well researched, not pushing any obvious agenda. Well done Trace. EDIT: One misshap is that they said the AR-15 could fire fully automatic. This is inaccurate. The AR-15 is a sem-automatic rifle only. Effectively the same system as your grandpa's old wood-rifle. A weapon you probably never saw as threatening. Treating these weapons as weapons of murder just because their furnish is identical to that of the military is wrong. These AR-15's were designed to be sporting-rifles. Not 'assault rifles'.

And *Why do gun aficionados almost intentionally keep avoiding the conversation about bump stocks? Here's a fact for those people - if a simple, easy attachment to the gun can SUBSTANTIALLY alter its firing rate and/or firing mode, then it is CERTAINLY NOT EXCLUSIVELY SEMI-AUTOMATIC.* There are a lot more comments than this one that are pressing how "these guns are just like your average handgun". Can't tell if they know about guns, or only know the things that support their tribal agenda regarding the subject. "Avoid uncomfortable information" seems to be a strong motto. People are so hell bent on latching on to a cultural vestige, they'd abandon any moral contemplation over the reality of their actions, and the price others pay for their little fantasy role playing adventure in their head lol. I have to give you praise for that. I am pro 2-A, and as such I don't believe in restricting the average law abiding citizen from ownership of a firearm. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. If you could eliminate all guns, people would use other weapons to kill people. It has happened since the dawn of time, and it'll continue to happen. If you restrict average people from owning guns, only bad people will have guns. What stops a bad person with a gun? A good person with a gun.

There is no technical definition for assault rifle. The term was made up to scare people. The first time it was used was to describe military rifles adapted for civilian use. As the Armalite Rifle was used by civilians before being adapted for the military, it didn't qualify so the definition has been modified over the years to make the platform somehow fit into the definition.

This video fails to explain the difference between a civilian AR-15 and a military M16. To set the record straight the military has never and will never issue an AR-15 to troops. The AR-15 is the civilian version of the M16. M16's have a fire control switch that lets them select Automatic(continuous fire until release of the trigger), 3 round burst(3 rounds per trigger pull), or Semi-Automatic (1 round per trigger pull). The AR-15 civilian version only has Semi-Automatic fire. 1 bullet per trigger pull.
@atadbitnefarious1387

If anybody needs to "get it right" it's the folks who keeps saying AR 15s are "civilian versions..." They are not. The early Colt SP1 would be a "civilian version" of the M16. Because it is based on the M16 TDP but modified to be semi auto only. Until 1963, ALL AR15s WERE FULL AUTO weapons. 1963 was the year the COLT MODIFIED AR15 and got it approved by the ATF for commercial sale. AR 15 is a generic term for any rifle of the same system. M16, M4 etc are specific configurations/designations of AR15s built under government contract for the US military.
@parksdude
@parksdude 6 лет назад
ATadBitNefarious what you are saying is just factually incorrect. ArmaLite tried to sell the rifle to the US military under the name AR-15, along side the .308 AR-10. Then ArmaLite company fell into bad financial trouble and sold both designs to Colt. A few years later colt made some small design changes and was able to sell to the US military under the M16 name. Then made the semi-auto civilian version to be sold to police forces and civilians under the AR-15 name. Your argument would be like saying all ford fusion cars can compete in stock car racing. No, ford has a specific engine and other parts that get top performance for racing and then they have the same engine type that is for the civilian market.

This question can be easily answered: The AR-15 platform is a rugged, controllable, ergonomic rifle suitable for shooters of all skill levels. With sixty years of development, and a vast aftermarket, the rifle to be specced for any purpose, and any caliber, the owner desires. If it can be said that anyone needs a rifle, the rifle they need is an AR.

J J Assault rifle is not a thing. The Germans called it that because assault refers to the type of combat your referring to. It’s an offensive action against an objective usually meaning closing in and overwhelming the enemy with firepower. “Very rough explanation” and at the time Semi-auto and bolt action rifles were the most readily available. Suddenly you had the rate of fire of a machine gun in a rifle sized platform. This is no longer the case for one fully auto is near standard when speaking of military issued weapons. You can also get a rifle in large calibers such as .308 or .50 so I didn’t know what you meant by “intermediate”. And he’s 100% correct in saying it stands for Armalite rifle. I don’t know a rifle with the word assault in its official designation.

Sorry but as a liberal black rifle owner you forget to mention one huge difference between the ar15 and the family members you listed. They are all automatic fire or burst fire(more than one shot per trigger pull.) The ar15 is semi-auto(one shot per trigger pull.) Makes a huge difference!

When Trace talked about the black gun he was referring to the AR family which all have different firing modes. Also you can modify an AR-15 to be fully auto, or buy a legal it auto with a certificate and license.

The problem with banning or even limiting any type of weapon is the existence of the 2nd amendment. It's a fundamental right. Guns are used in self-defense considerably more then for murder (if they wouldn't have had a gun though, how many violent crimes/murders would there be if those 850k+ were unarmed. Full auto weapons aren't banned either, you need a class 3 license(to put it briefly). Attachments could make a slight difference in the effectiveness of a weapon, you said it yourself by mentioning optics. People have, I believe the Life-Card is. The grenade launcher joke was just that a joke and exaggeration. I agree that people on office should know more about firearms though. And once again rapid fire is able to be quickly fired. Please dont spread misinformation while trying to prove your point. P.S. the AR15 used to be used in singapore and was dubbed the M16S1 and it was full auto

This argument makes no sense. I don't support gun control but bodily autonomy does not mean there are no laws or regulations about what someone is able to do with their body. You can't beat someone up and then go "I was just exercising bodily autonomy." This goes for many other possessions. For example, just because you own a car does not permit you to drive recklessly or drunk. If you're going to make an argument, talk about how the AWB makes no sense and is counterproductive.

The abortion parallel makes perfect sense if you are thinking about what a law abiding citizen would use a firearm for (personal defense) as opposed to the tool itself. The left is saying one has the bodily autonomy to end a pregnancy but one does not have that same autonomy to defend ones self or ones family. Are you fucking stupid? Did you not read a word of my comment? I don't agree with banning guns at all, and like I said, if you want to make a compelling argument, address the Assault Weapons Ban which makes zero sense. Banning cars is the exact opposite of my conclusion you absolute fuckwit. You have to accept that some people will drive recklessly, but car ownership cannot be banned, people need cars. Similarly, you have to accept that sometimes people will commit crimes using legally obtained firearms, but that does not mean you ban all guns. My point was that this statement "only gun owners should control their guns like how only women should control their own bodies" is not true in any legal or ethical sense. Actually saying that gun regulations should be treated like abortion regulations would mean you support more gun control, because abortion is very highly regulated.

Ultimately a gun is a tool to kill from a safe distance rather than using a club, bladed weapon, or a spear. "Human nature" has improved the gun from crude flint lock, black powder weapons to what we have today. "Human nature" decides where the bullets go when the trigger is pulled, not the gun. This is a cultural issue, not a gun ownership one. You can't take the guns away anymore, there are too many. But sadly common sense has left this world. I'll be surprised if I get any replies...

Inaccuracies and omissions pointed out below: In 1963 you could still purchase the fully automatic version, as long as you payed the $200 tax stamp and registered it under NFA. This was possible all the way until 1986. Oh also in 1963, you could still mail order straight to your house without any background checks or anything... yea... I love how you point out "Oh you can add a grenade launcher..." actually no, you can add a flare launcher. A grenade launcher is a restricted destructive device under NFA. Not to mention the grenades themselves are illegal to own... But you can make it into a golf ball launcher... seriously you can really make it into a golf ball launcher... Also failed to mention its the most commonly used sporting rifle in competitive shooting.. And I don't mean old school stationary target shooting, I'm talking about 3-gun competition and practical shooting sports.

Lee Blackman am I the only one who realized that grenade launcher thing was a joke? The "if you're that kinda guy" gave it away

To those who say that the AR-15 is a bad hunting rifle obviously haven't hunted with one. Yes, when chambered in .223, you won't want to be shooting deer, but man oh man is it a good varmit gun, hog gun, and range gun. When chambered in .300 Blackout, .308, or even .300 Win Mag, it's one of the best guns to hunt with out there. I hunt white tail with a Blackout, and hog hunt with my 223. One of the main reasons people get one is because of its versatility, you can use the same gun to hunt, range shoot, and home defense, instead of buying three separate guns to do it. Sure, there are better guns for each individual job, most Bolt rifles would be a better choice to hunt, a high-powered pistol or even a shotgun may be better for home defense. Guns don't kill people, people kill people, and it's a sad sad truth. It's sad that there are people out there who are either so twisted mentally or are just plain evil enough to do these things, but it's even worse to even think that there are people out there who would want to consider stripping us of our God-given right to defend ourselves. If I am going to defend myself, I want one of the most efficient weapons to have at my disposal, and any gun chambered in the AR platform would be my weapon of choice, be it threats foreign or domestic.

When an AR is chambered in .308 or .300 Win Mag it is not an AR-15 anymore. You're in AR-10 territory.

I would love to build an AR-10 in .308 but parts and accessories, not to mention ammo costs, are pretty high. Also AR-10s tend to be finicky and less reliable; to get it reliable you're going to have to through parts at it to get it right and with parts being pretty expensive, it'll add up and you'll have a safe full of parts that don't exactly work with each other.

Mike L Yeah, that would be pretty problematic. Some good sites, where I built my AR like Spike's Tactical, Primary Arms and such like that have been good to me about reliable parts. Good luck with yous, though if you get around to it!

Austin Schmid still in the planning phase of my second AR-15 project before more laws are passed in California making all semiautomatic weapons illegal. I would love an AR-10 but my priorities are in building a second AR-15 and possibly an AR-9 as a third build with a 16" barrel.

Great video! I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who doesn't quite understand what an AR-15 is.

Joseph Jobo Licayan it doesn't nearly have as much if the variations that the ar platform has yet at least in america.

There are literally hundreds of Kalashnikov variants that have been produced by many different manufacturers and countries, many more than the Armalite Rifle 15.

Augusto Pinochet alright then I just haven't seen them when I go to gunshows and look online. Then again I don't like the look of the ak so I haven't done alot of research since I prefer the ar10 and other ar platforms. Sorry for miss speaking on a topic now I know.

Yep. The media loves the AR cause its all black and scary looking. Most ak's are sold with wood furniture so its not as scary and of course everyone know black plastic makes firearms much more deadly. I have ak's with wood stocks and ak's with plastic stock. The wood ones just put holes in stuff when shot but the plastic makes the target blow up. For all the people who don't understand sarcasm, I am just joking.

They are not weapons, they are guns. They are only weapons if you use them as such. Obviously, the people at Seeker use then as weapons. I used them as sports equipment. They are my 15 iron to be used on the IPSC range.

+T yeh. exactly. a gun is a tool, just like a hammer. a hammer can be used to murder someone, it can also be used to build a homeless shelter. it's who's holding the hammer that makes all the difference. same applies to guns
@LordCommissarDrac
@LordCommissarDrac 6 лет назад
cept a hammer wasn't originally designed with the intel to kill anything, it was designed to hammer nails, wooden sticks, poles etc. Guns have always been produced with the intend to kill. Whether animal or human, killing is the job they do and thats why they're fundamentally different from all other "tools"

T Yeh The sole reason guns exist is because they make killing things really easy without putting the user in harm's way. Your example for using it on the range is flawed since you aren't actually using it to accomplish any tasks, you're just firing at a non living target for fun. Just because someone decides to use a gun as a toy doesn't invalidate the primary purposes of its existence. Being pro gun ownership is fine, but acting as if guns have any use other than as weapons is just disingenuous.

julian marquez Using your logic, I would assume you would say the same of archery. The bow and arrow are weapons of war, and to use them as sports equipment would be a misuse.... I assure you that the bow and arrow in modern warfare would be ineffective. Such a user would be quickly eliminated from the battle field. Likewise the AR15. That is why the civilian AR15 is NOT used by the US Army. The M4 is a much more powerful gun, a true weapon of war with its auto/select fire capability, its 30 plus round magazines, and its heavier barrel (which allows for sustain high rate of fire). I can use my varmint gun for combat, but I assure you, I would not last long on the battlefield.

Im glad to hear such a measured report about the gun and allowing others to form their own opinions. I am a little afraid to dig through the comments, but what ive seen thus far is surprisingly positive. I especially liked the comment toward the end that this is a collaborative effort for all involved to make this a safe scenario
