Chad I did this on one of my trucks a lot of the trucks in the 70 s and 80 s had cupped pivots for the tailgate you can weld a washer inside your lower pipe so the washer contacts the face of the cupped pivot so you don’t have side to side movement take one of the cupped pivots and cut two sides off weld some flat stock on each side you cut off notch the bottom of one side of the lower pipe to fit the pivot mount the pivot that you modified at a 45 degree angle that way you can sit the tailgate on the full pivot and then lower the notched side onto the modified pivot that way the tailgate can be removed by holding it at a 45 degree angle and lift the end off of the modified side

Chad, an old trick you could have used on the bolts that were holding the nuts in place is to put Milk of Magnesia on them and let it dry. It works great so you don't get weld spatter.

Never understood the negative comments left on this channel. There's absolutely no where at all where you can literally watch a man build an entire vehicle from scratch live. You can see teams or crews all doing it on shows but never anything like this. I've seen people post crap so many times, but jealousy is just out there I guess. Everyone here is watching this being built while the builder shows you how to do it yourself without a bunch of professional tools. Been watching this channel for ages now, no intention of stopping either. Chad's one of only 2 car builders I'd ever want to buy a car from. This build is absolutely stunning. I'd clear coat it instead of painting it.
@garrybernardin9719

Negativity and jealousy go hand in hand. Chad should take these comments as complements. They usually don’t have anything constructive to add. Just criticism. Small minds. .

Always fun to watch you guys Chad & Jolene . I´m an retired blacksmith and welder from Iceland and I learn alot from you and its so much fun to see how other do their things compare what I used to do . I wish there would have been Y.T in the days when I was learning . My best teachers were the old guys you worked with but many of them did not want new things around them like MIG and TIG and Argon . I was one of the first pro MIG welder in Iceland . We had ESAB machines great tools from Sweden . It´s good to know how things used to be done in the days but you have to be open for new things and how others do their things . Much respect and thank you both for sharing what you are doing and building ... Peace and love ♥

The early trucks had brackets that bolted to the body to hinge the gate. You just put the gate pins into the brackets on each side and then bolted the assembly to the truck. All gaps and free movement were built in. The gates just used tabs on the top that let them be attached with hooks attached to chains. To lower the gate, you removed the hooks and chains kept the gate from going all the way down when open.
@MrMrsedz
@MrMrsedz Год назад
Going to have to trim that angle iron bottom edge Chadly ..so the tailgate can swing down ..
@noponder
@noponder Год назад
I like how you did the tailgate. If it was me, I would make it so the tailgate flopped all the way down and out of the way. That way it would be easier to get things in and out of the truck bed.
@danielplummer6385
@danielplummer6385 Год назад
Alot goes into building your own tailgate, especially when it comes time to attach it and make it function properly, it would probably have takenme all day to figure it out. Great work as always Chad & Jolene! The tailgate probably won't get used a lot otherwise I would be concerned that over time the hinge bolts would turn with the gate and back out.

Suggestion the piping you used at the top of each fender where you have the hole on each side just above your tailgate the hole that is there on the end of the pipe how about an LED blinker light on each side would look badass and definitely different just a suggestion I'm sure you won't use it but I thought it would be a good idea, I still think you are a fantastic visionary whatever you do I'm sure it will look fantastic,

Chad, here's a tip for welding up nuts. I keep a collection of brass bolts and screws in most common sizes. When I weld the nut to whatever I'm welding it to, the brass bolt comes out readily because weld/spatter doesn't stick to it. Simple, quick, and clean threads afterward. Look for them in plumbing sections at the hardware store, and save any that you come across by blind luck... Love this build!!

!!!***Hey Chad… Here’s an idea***!!! On your tailgate chain, use some 1”-3/4” heat shrink (the kind you’d use for wiring) … cut it to length then pull the chain through the heat shrink. Then use a heat gun and shrink the heat shrink to the chain. It’ll save your paint and it gives your chain a professional finished look! … not to mention, it won’t make a horrible racket going down the road! ***^^^***^^^****^****^^^***^^^*** ^^ ^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ ^ ^ ^ ^

You went a totally different direction with that tailgate than I was expecting. I figured the point of using the pipe on the bottom was to use that as the pivot over some short pieces of pipe welded to the inside of the bed. Then the tailgate would just drop over the pivots. But hey, you got it done your way in the end. Good on ya.
