Speaking at The Landscape of Cancer Research: Advances in Immuno-oncology in June 2024, Dr. Mark Yarchoan, Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins University presented his talk on personalized cancer vaccines.
Therapeutic cancer vaccines aim to induce or augment antitumor immunity by generating and expanding antitumor T cells that recognize tumor antigens. Despite many cancer vaccines entering the clinic over the past few decades, prior clinical efforts have generally failed to demonstrate compelling clinical efficacy. A new generation of therapeutic cancer vaccines is in development, which generally utilize novel vaccine platforms and technologies to target cancer-specific antigens (neoantigens). These novel vaccines are showing initial evidence of efficacy in the clinic, though larger clinical trials are necessary to confirm their safety and effectiveness.
