Amtrak's AEM-7 has been a fan favorite locomotive of many railfans and acted as the workhorse on the Northeast Corridor for over 30 years. It's conception originated out of Sweden after testing the SJ Rc4 but a French locomotive design was also considered. Two designs, only one would win and create the 'toaster'. The AEM-7 was a locomotive that revitalized Northeast Corridor service and became one of the most reliable locomotives Amtrak ever owned. Find out more regarding the AEM-7 in this video! @Zeta0001 The SS1 and SS2 both had a top speed of only 100kph which would have been way too slow. the SS1 is notoriously unreliable and took years to have its problems fixed. Chinese locomotives only got good after the SS4 and only reached 160kph(100mph) with the SS8. China's railway system has come a long way and isn't always what it is today. Fun fact, the ACS64 and the Chinese railway HXD1 series are both derivatives of the Semiens EuroSprinter so they are technically cousins.

@Zeta0001 Given electrification is pretty much non-existent in the US outside of the northeast corridor. There isn't much since in heaving an electric freight locomotive.

In my book, the AEM7 will always be the locomotives that saved Amtrak in the North East Corridor. Just think about it, the girls gave Amtrak 30 years of service with very little problems. I like the new ACS64, but those little toaster's are my favorite. Amtrak had only two locomotives that where dependable being the AEM7 and the F40'S and I miss them both.

Adding little more facts, max allowed speed in Sweden: Rc4 max speed 135 km/h well since they all are freight engines now that would be 100 km/h, Rc6 160 km/h still in passenger use. That accident mention in this mowie the crew on those diesels was high on smoking marijuana and bypass a red signal where NEC goes from 4 track to 2 when passing a bridge: search for 1987 Maryland train collision on Google for more info. Yupp I know to much info :)

You missed something: When Amtrak was scrapping their AEM-7s, lights, number plates, and other small parts were sold to railfans.

True, but they stopped selling the parts quite suddenly. Pity. It seemed like a great way for fans to pick up a keepsake. The horns were popular and generally sold in the $500-$750 range. I picked up a numberboard for considerably less!

GG1 was legendary, E60 was problematic, AEM7 was outstanding, HHP8 was too short lived, ACS64 is quite decent again ...? It seems like they are alternating between good and bad.

From my reading, a lot of the problems in the US are mostly lack of maintenance of track and other lineside equipment and the locomotives themselves. If you have a unit with a rushed development, then you are just compounding an already problematic issue.

@@BulletTrainProductions The new Acelas shouldn't be bad, they're made by Alstom and they're based off of train sets already in service over in Europe. Also given that Alstom makes really good trains most of the time, it's unlikely that the new Acelas will be bad. Also, I think with current locomotives, we've learned to look back at what was good about the past locomotives and what mistakes were made in order to build better ones.

2:15 - Amtrak actually tested a dual-voltage version of the CC 6500 called the CC 21000, which is capable of running on AC current as well as DC. X996 was a CC21000.

I was pretty lucky to inadvertently catch a ride on one of the last runs of SEPTA’s toaster-derivative on a suburban commuter train. I remember it was a comfortable ride! When I eventually got off, I saw just how old and worn it was. It was so much louder than the usual locomotives and electricity constantly sparking off the wheels and pantographs.

Here's the answer to some of your questions regarding the way I sound in this video. No, I'm not currently depressed, sick, or bored of narrating Engines of Amtrak for that matter. I actually enjoy narrating in reality. However, a little while ago I bought myself a Blue Yeti Pro Microphone instead of just using my camcorder to record audio. The first video to hear this change was in the prologue episode of the Cass City Branchline Stories. So in short, the only reason I sound different is me still getting used to my new microphone's sensitivity. On the day I recorded, it was being particularity annoying. It'll get better soon though and I hopefully won't sound as quiet and I'll adjust to the sensitivity.

The Austrian Railways ÖBB still have its descendants of the Rc4 in daily operation. In the early 1970s they had bought 10 swedish Rc4s (ÖBB class 1043) from which BBC/SGP derived the class 1044 (at that time the most powerful 4-axle electric in the world at 5280kW), which went into service starting in 1976. Overall 217 locos were built with minor improvements until 1995 (!) and most of them are still in regular service. It wasn't until 2018 when they started retiring the older ones. Very reliable machines indeed!

Very nice as always. SEPTA's AEM-7s were my "school buses" when I went to Temple University. Just a minor side note though, SEPTA and MARC are pronounced as words (SEP-ta, and "Mark" respectively). Keep up the good work.

The locomotives in the United States that were used by Amtrak that I loved and will miss is definitely the f40phs, AEM-7s, GG1s, and the e60s, they will be remembered and loved for what those locomotives did for Amtrak. For this video Rest In Peace AEM-7s.

An update on the AEM-7: With Caltrain's electrification on the coming up, the remaining AEM-7s are being used to test the new electrification and have already been delivered to Caltrain.

The SEPTA AEM-7's are no longer in active service, but 6 (and 1 ALP-44) are in NJT's Morrisville yard.

OH MY GOD IT’S HERE!!!! YES! I recall being in the cab of an AEM-7 a long time ago considering the crew noticed I loved trains, so for probably three seconds I got to take a look in the cab... I loved it and I’ll never forget it.

Good film. Few more details. Originaly they came with same design as french TGV pantographs-black ones-later design Faively. The red design was british "High reach", it was actually tested early on the first unit 900, but most if not all of toasters came from the factory with the french ones. In early 90s they were being replaced with red "High reach" and sometimes on double headed trains it was possible to see one toaster with red and one with the black pantographs.

In Sweden the Rc class of locomotives goes from Rc1 to Rc7 with some numbers just denoting a different gearing to attain higher speeds. For instance the Rc5 does 135km/h but with gearing for 160km/h it's called an Rc6 and with 180km/h gearing it's called Rc7 The Rc2 and Rc3 are also the same units the only difference being gearing with Rc2 at 135km/h and Rc3 at 160km/h. This is also why you can see Rc locomotives change designation from time to time depending on if there is a surplus or shortage of passenger or freight locomotives. An exception to this is the Rc4P (large P as small p denotes 891mm narrow gauge in Sweden) these locomotives are geared for 160 km/h and and pull 160 km/h mail trains between major sorting hubs. Six Rc locomotives was built as the Rm class built to pull LKAB iron ore trains on the Iron ore line in northern Sweden with three locomotives per train. They where used as regular goods trains for many years after LKAB rationalized and acquired new locomotives but are currently being used to pull Iron ore trains for Kaunis Iron on the Iron ore line. These locomotives use American style couplers when pulling iron ore trains. The Rc1 locomotive is retired but the others are going strong. The Rc2 locomotives used by Green Cargo have been modernized into the Rd2 locomotive.

I'm glad I got to see the AEM-7s in 2016, though they were all stored at Wilmington, with the exception of 946. She was leased for MARC service between Wash. DC and Baltimore, being the only active AEM-7 I've ever seen.

Great job! I really was never interested in Amtrak but when your series came out I started watching it and now I'm hooked on Amtrak. I saw one of these a few years ago when I was with my friend in Philadelphia but didn't get my camera out quick enough. Keep up the great work!

I lived in Philadelphia from 2011 to 2013 and loved seeing the AEM-7s on the Northeast Corridor and SEPTA. There are a couple being used in the bay area for Caltrain electrification testing. They are probably my favorite push pull locomotive ever made. I'd probably buy one and put it in my back yard or use it as a lawn ornament if I could. I really hope the ACS-64 is a good locomotive. SEPTA just got some and will probably maintain them better than Amtrak.

Great video, just an FYI. Here in Philly, no one uses the full name for SEPTA, and we don't pronounce each individual letter like S-E-P-T-A. We just say the acronym SEPTA as if it was a word itself. Sad the SEPTA AEM-7's will be gone soon though.

The Ra locomotive shown at 1:22 was a very limited series locomotive. What the Rc really replaced was the large D series of locomotives which had been in service since the 1920s.

Brandon Bostian, Amtrak Northeast Regional 188, May 12, 2015, Port Richmond, Pennsylvania. Yep, I remember that wreck and seeing pictures of the devastating aftermath. I was just watching tv in my room that night minding my own business when the news came on and I heard “Amtrak train derails due to excessive speed on curve in Port Richmond, PA”, that’s when I said ohh crap. 601 was only a year old at the time. Bostian had a concussion when his head hit the dashboard of the locomotive. Eight people were killed and over 200 were injured with around 35 receiving serious injuries. Bostian was charged with eight counts of murder and manslaughter and was put on trial in September 2017, more than two years after the derailment.

Update: As of December 1, 2018, AEM-7s are officially retired when the last locomotives to ever run in the country made their final runs on the Paoli/Thorndale Line as part of a celebratory farewell run hosted by SEPTA. #2308 was the last ALP-44 to run, since NJ Transit retired theirs in 2012 for the ALP-45DPs. After retirement, the seven AEM-7s and single ALP-44 were reassigned to SEPTA work service until December 2021 and in early 2022, after three years in work service, the seven AEM-7s and single ALP-44 locomotives were finally sold for scrap. As of December 2022, all eight locomotives have been scrapped. ACS-64s took over “Amtrak Cities Sprinter, 64 megawatts”. The SEPTA units should be called SEPTA Cities Sprinters SCS-64s. R.I.P AEM-7s May 9, 1980 - February 1, 2022.

The Swedish state railways' Rc4 1166 which was loaned to Amtrak in 1975-76 is actually still in regular freight service here in Sweden. In fact most of the 366 Rc class locomotives are; some of them are over 50 years old at this point and still going strong (although they've been updated and rebuilt several times over the years, especially the older variants). They're being slowly phased out of passenger service though since they have a hard time matching the acceleration of modern EMU's, and they're limited to 160 km/h (100 mph) because safety regulations require magnetic track brakes on passenger rolling stock at speeds faster than that, and rebuilding a bunch of old cars would be expensive. On some routes they used to run passenger services in a push-pull configuration with one locomotive at each end of the train, enabling quick turnarounds without any switching.

Also the Conrail locomotives are B36-7 locomotives, there are only three of them that crash with the Amtrak 94. The Conrail locomotives are 5044, 5052, and 5045. Both of the AEM-7 locomotives, 900 and 903. And Conrail 5045 were scraped. While 5044 and 5052, are continuing service and they probably exist.

The aem-7-when it worked- was a great to operate. A nice simple design that could always get up to 125... the only comfort issue came from the chairs. Glad I got to run it before they were phased out.

Same with the HHP-8 - oddly enough with AMTRAK crews. (AMTRAK supplies crews to MARC and they operate out of the multi-service Ivy City yard.) So what does AMTRAK do different for MARC - with the sane crews - with the same locos - here the same locos work for MARC, but not for AMTRAK itself?

That's because Americans literally run their equipment into the ground. There's no reason why AEM7s couldn't have 50+ year career, but improper maintenance and stupid policy of quick replacement instead of "complementary replacement" did their toll. Because of governments idiotic limited founding policy, there was actually never enough AEM7s on the roster. Amtrak did the same with GG1s; no steel mill in the US was able to produce new tires for driving wheels of the Gs. They ordered new tires in Great Britain, but after the tires were bought to the US they took the GG1s out of service and scrapped them. Amazing how much money is being wasted at Amtrak and they are crying for more founds.

@@leontransit1652 You might be right, but the problems go a lot deeper i think. It's how young people are raised from young age. Basically a throw away society. Imagine "in the name of progress"-scrapping almost new steam locomotives to replace them with diesels. Examples of that kind of waste were common during steam to diesel change over in the US. I think a lot of it has to do with having an easy life vs. Having do with what you've got.

@@maciekkra539 They discovered that the GG1s had serious frame cracks due to improper frame design (Although PRR 4900, with it's riveted frame was safe), and they also had PCB's in the transformers, which doomed them. Talks about restoring a GG1 always fail when they don't have the money to get new transformers and frames.

Excellent video guys! However, a few clarifications. SNCF 6500s were not 153 tones but 115 to 120 tons. That tonnage would never have allowed for fast service and would have wrecked tracks in Europe. Those locomotives were excellent. They were designed by Paul Arzens who wanted to shape them after seeing runner at the finish line. They were excellent when the sun shone on the horizon. They were mixed locomotives with a reduction gear. They could haul certain cars at 200 KPH and freight at 100 KPH. The CC21003 was a bi-current (1,500 DC and 25,000 AC) locomotive and hence slightly heavier 125 to 128 tons. I remember these locomotives very well as I traveled around Europe a lot at that time. I rode the last TEE trains running in the South West of France on their Etandard and Capitole trains 200 KPH service. Man, it was something else! The CC210x were used to haul trains from Paris to Nice where the current switched in Marseilles from 1,500 DC to 25,000 AC.

As I recall, the Rc4 came about because the practical Swedes wanted to improve performance without rebuilding the entire rail system to unreasonably high standards and the cost that came with it. No wonder the "meatball" could roll down our "spaghetti" track!

Rc4 was actually made for slower freight, only Rc4P was geared for 160 kph and there's only one locomotive of the Rc4P designation. Rc3 was however geared for 160kph. It was first after the US started to run them at 200 kph that it was attempted in Sweden with RC series. But no RC trains are run at >160 kph in Sweden now (we still run Rc4), they do not fulfill the requirements. We don't really have high speed railway in Sweden. Top speed is 200 kph. 😏 Rc6 is also geared for 160kph.

Sad to see the AEM7 go! They were good locos... it'd be cool to see HHP-8 or EMD F69PHAC or maybe even PRR E44 in your videos (the last one on the list i mentioned was only used as service loco for Amtrak). Greetings! TRIVIA: AEM-7 is related to Electroputere (Romania)'s LE5100 from 1965 and Rade Koncar (Yugoslavia)'s LE3400 from 1967, both having ASEA origins :P

SEPTA has now replaced all 7 AEM-7s and their single ALP-44 locomotive with the Siemens ACS-64 (15 total). Also, there is a preserved Amtrak AEM-7 locomotive at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA (near Lancaster). SEPTA has bi-level locomotive-hauled passenger coaches (similar to NJT's) on order, with plans on replacing the aging GE-built Silverliner IV m.u. coaches with bi-level Silverliner VI m.u. coaches based on the NJT/SEPTA locomotive-hauled coach design.
