Can you hear the difference between the ENGL Fireball 25 and the EVH 5150 III 50W 6L6 tube amp heads? It is very interesting to compare these without a boost and into the exact same speakers and hear the differences between the two amps.
Hoping that this video inspires you to make some noise! tHANK YOU for watching.

Very well captured Fireball 25. I have one and it sounds like in reality. Personally I hate hissing of 5150 amps so I went with Fireball but EVH sounds fuller.
@ZagrasNixillis

I think I like the ENGL more because I think it would sound better with a boost. The 5150 doesn't sound like it needs a boost but if you did it would probably sound really good for djent stuff. I am most likely going to buy that ENGL 25 w.

Honestly these are both bucket list amps for me! Well, the 100w versions anyway. I find even in this example both are good for certain types of riffs! The EVH is basically the tightest thing out there, and on its own it has a bit more clarity and definition, which makes it hard to beat for single notes and palm mutes, but I have yet to find and amp flavor that impresses me more than ENGLs for big sustained power chords! I'd love to quad track with both of these or blend them after reamping!

I’ve had a 5150 since they came out. I’m old. 😂 I really like this Engl though. Has a nice low mid girth, which is what led me to the 5150 over Marshall, etc. back in the day.
@X9Eric
@X9Eric Год назад
Hey LostInPA, you would love it. It's not as tight as I was expecting but has that ENGL girth to its tone that is so cool! And the cool thing is that with a boost in front of it which it takes very well you can tighten it up if you wish to.

I'm using studio headphones. Engl has that full dark sound, evh was more brash and hollow (as they are known for). If I'm metalling a 7-string, I'd rather have that ENGL badge behind me. I'd save the EVH for rock.

I had the stealth side by side with the ENGL FB25 and I picked the ENGL every time and ended up selling the EVH. Honestly, I think the non-stealth EVH (here) sounds better than the stealth, but I'd still go ENGL regardless, it's cleaner, more articulate.
@X9Eric
@X9Eric 11 месяцев назад
That's great feedback @Soloist1983! The Stealth is favored over the regular 6L6 and I have always been curious to try the stealth 50w to see just how big of a difference it REALLY is but have never had the opportunity. But I also quickly became interested in the 100 watters. I enjoyed the 6L6 50 while I had it quickly bonded with and loved the ENGL more if every way as well. IMHO the ENGL sounds meaner than the 6L6 50w.

@@X9Eric You got a very good amp in return. That amp is also on my top of the list. Such an kickass amp that really doesn't need much. An easy amp if you want to. Hey Eric, how you been brother? My ears are telling me that the ENGL is...how do I want to put this? It's less compressed than the EVH Red channel. So does that make it more "raw" ? I'm not sure...I think the ENGL is a slightly higher gain version of the EVH Blue channel as far as compression is concerned...actually the Stealth 5150 Blue channel is a virtual lock with that ENGL I believe. I've rambled on enough...have a great week my friend.

I think the Engl has 6v6 tubes. I own both and I can say with confidence that the Engl is better. It's not nearly as noisy and has a tight bass and no fizz on the top. Built in noise gate to top it off. I've also had bad luck with EVH reliability. 3 have blown up on their own accord, Another I blew up accidentaly. I do baby my tube amps but the EVH is very stubborn, it'll blow no matter how much you baby them. Sonic Drive Studios guy loved the sound but got a couple in a row that died so he washed his hands of them. When they work they sound great, especially the blue channel.Unfortunately you never know when they might blow.
@X9Eric

DANG 3 of them! Wow, sorry to hear about your experience with EVH amps. Reliability is a big issue and no amp sounds THAT good to have to deal with breakdowns IMHO. Especially considering our incredible options. Thank you for sharing your experience!

@@X9Eric Actually Eric now that I think about it and since I commented last , my 4th evh just decided not to even turn on. No lights, no noise, no nothin. But the fuse is intact and the power tubes are lighting up but nothing else. I forgot to mention I had 2 El 34 versions but when the 2nd one blew I got my money back. Either I've got the worst luck or EVH hates me.

They both sound great but I have yo lean yowards Engl. I currently have the 5150iii EL34 50w... would I regret selling it for the Engl FB25? Would there be a noticeable "lack" of "umphh" when playing through a Mesa 2x12 Cab???
@X9Eric
@X9Eric Год назад
No lack of umphh, the FB25 packs a harder punch at lower volumes IMHO, it is when you start getting louder that the EVH catches up. Tough question, it really depends on which distortion characteristics you prefer. FB25 6L6 and ENGL sizzle or EVH EL34 mid punch. The ENGL IMHO has a very unique angry dry cold sound where the EVH is more versatile offering 80's metal up to modern. The ENGL is mean and modern

Sorry but the comment "Some riffs are really tailored to EL34s and others to 6L6s" is nonsense for high gain amps, where the sound and distortion comes 99% from the preamp. Just compare a 5150 III EL34 and the one with 6L6 and they sound virtually identical. There are even comparisons here on youtube about them, where people definitely fail in a blind test.
@X9Eric
@X9Eric 7 месяцев назад
No worries @DLJFTW, everybody is welcomed and encouraged to share their experiences. I am down to hear them! However having owned both at the same time and making videos with them IHMO they are very different and I favor the EL34. Hope that helps,
@wtbgamegenie
@wtbgamegenie 3 месяца назад
You’re definitely right but with a couple caveats. Having big 6l6 tubes in a lunchbox which are biased well below their maximum output is going to give more clean headroom in a power amp than 2 EL84’s biased closer to their max. Now most of what people are really talking about is the design lineage of the amp. Typically 6l6 amps trace their lineage to fender and EL34 amps trace their lineage to Marshall. Jim Marshall originally imported Fender amps but the shipping and taxes were expensive. He decided to make his own amps but American 6l6 tubes were hard to come by in the UK so he went with EL tubes which use a different socket and so he was forced to redesign rather than copy fender part for part. Many amp companies began by modifying Marshalls or fenders and then even more by modifying those derivatives. But still those sounds have nothing to do with the actual tubes and everything to do with which designs people were using as templates.
