England and Wales play out a 2-2 draw in the Home International Championship at Wembley in May 1975. Fielding several players with limited international experience, England forge ahead early on through debutant David Johnson but poor defending by England is seized upon by John Toshack and Arfon Griffiths to give Wales the lead. England salvage a draw when substitute Brian Little marks his only cap with the cross which Johnson converts. Don Revie's side go on to win the championship after beating Scotland 5-1 at Wembley three days later.

Rod Thomas of Wales, what a fantastic defender, super cool and very efficient.

Brian Little was one of many gifted English players of that period who never got the caps they deserved as a result successive England managers' obsessions with work rate.

Great shame he had to retire so young. Would have been an all time great.

Yes the 70`s was Known for that either that you mentioned or Players such as Hudson and worthington who were individuals on and off the pitch

I love that move by John Toshack at the end. he just did not have the legs to take advantage of it.

Games were better to watch then. Good end to end stuff. Players earn ridiculous amounts of money now, and some poor kids starving in the world. Going to bed crying because they are hungry. What an unfair world.

Those starving kids don't play for a Premier League club.

It's a disgrace that this was Brian Little's only England cap. He didn't play for the right club it seems.

Although the Seventies was mainly a grim time for British football, I loved this era (always associate it with the Admiral strip). There's an incredible amount of skill in that England team - Whitworth, Watson, Todd and Gillard is a wonderful, ball-playing defence (though a little lacking on the defensive side, as seen here) - Dave Thomas, absolute poetry in motion, Little, Viljoen, Gerry Francis....then there the ones who were hardly ever picked like Marsh, Worthington, Bowles etc.

Why oh why don't we have these Home Championships Internationals anymore? Even if it included the Rep of Ireland I for one would certainly welcome back this exciting annual competition! C'MON you Home Nations' FA's, get yourselves together and follow the lead of the Six Nations Rugby by reinstating this UK born soccer institution!

Owners and managers don't want it because the games are meaningless.
@gordonmathers6489
@gordonmathers6489 3 года назад
They became fairly meaningless due to the success of the English clubs in the European Competitions in the Late 70s and the 80s. Were usually played before the final and s a result both England and Scotland were weakened by missing key players

The British Internationals can be a warm-up for the Home nations before a big tournament instead of having meaningless friendlies.

Tragically that was Brian Little's one and only appearance for England. .. He was injured most of next season but on later form deserved a place, especially 76-77 season where he was brilliant.

Alan Hudson was another with a very short England career who did very well in his 2 games, including victory over West Germany.

N.Ireland and Ireland have separate football associations.I don't know about rugby. Also, Ireland didn't play in the Home Internationals, just England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland.
