Interesting to see how some of those predictions turned out. Taylor did go on to become England manager, Lineker was in great form and Barnes had an underwhelming tournament despite his obvious talent.
John Barnes had one good game for England against Brazil and got 90 caps as a result. No coincidence that we did well in this World Cup after he got dropped.
Makes you wonder if Barnes would have improved as an international player with more European club competition experience. The English club ban was a big obstacle for him I feel.
I often why England did not play far more attacking football in this tournament...?...any ideas...look at those players!..To me seminal in England's not to win the tournament was Bryan Robson's absence..especially in the knockout stages..
@@lodersracing He was a left sided attacking forward but could roam if needed be..with England he was expected to stay on the left and the team (England played central rarely focusing little on incisive play from the flanks or constructing moves with possession..he rarely took on opponent players on for England either and beat them...he always did that for Liverpool
Alberto As of June 2020, Jimmy Greaves is still around. He is currently 80 years old and has suffered with health problems for the last few years after having a stroke. He is now in a wheelchair and will never walk again.
Half way between ‘66 and ‘21 .... we took a lot of positives from that World Cup in ‘90 and learnt from it. Apparently there’s a bright future after loosing to Italy ‘21. 55 years of learning and taking positives. LETS HAVE SOME FRKN JAM TODAY !!!!!
@Wisty Boy I'll give you Brazil 84 Wisty but I have to say that i thought Waddle was always more effective than John for England, not saying he was a better player though.
England had some talented players during this period: Beardsley, Robson, Barnes, Waddle, Platt, Gascoigne and Pearce. Who do England have currently that are at or even close to this level? When you compare the equivalent players, you have: Lingard (Waddle?), Sterling (Barnes?), Ali (Robson?), Trippier (Pearce), Kane (Linekar). There really is no comparison bar perhaps Kane-Linekar. As with Italy and Holland England are going through a dry patch in terms of overall talent. Having said that they'll probably go and reach the WC final this year.
Good point, if you compare the start of the decade..Mariner, Robson, Wilkins, Brooking, Keegan, Sansom, Coppell, Hoddle..Barnes (Peter)..it gets worse..
