Remarkable scene as the English team give the Nazi salute during the German national anthem at a 1938 football match in Berlin.
England v. Germany (Soccer) General views of the Berlin international Soccer match between England and Germany. The score was 6-3 to England.
Note: Under orders from the British ambassador, England gave the Nazi salute inside the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Stan Cullis, of Wolves, refused to perform the salute, and was dropped for the match. England won 6-3 with Stanley Matthews among the scorers.

I can't believe some of the bad, negative comments, john Robinson ( Jackie) was my grandad, he worked a full time job as well as playing football, he travelled by train to his matches. Nothing like it is now, I have every right to be proud, I grew up with him, later in life he had a stroke, then cancer. My grandma struggled pushing his wheelchair, they had council bungalow. Yes I'm proud, proud of what he achieved, some of you have no idea what life was like in war time.

I find it cool how in 1938 the British gave Nazi salutes out of respect to Germans but almost 3 years later all those players and supporters were likely drafted into the military and could have met each other on the battlefield.

Hungary is my favorite team from that era. Neither German nor English football had that innovation. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, we played with a surprisingly similar technique without actually knowing anything about the old Hungary team. It comprised of fast dribbling, short passes with tremendous mid-field work. My elders at school played mesmerizing football too, as good as these players.

The invasion of the Baltic's and Finland by the Soviets in support of Nazi Germany. Soviet negotiations regarding joining the Axis. Then maybe you might realise that the England football team being asked to perform the Nazi salute in respect of the country that they were in, 3 years prior to the war and any atrocities being committed by the party, really isn't that bad.
