First group down Englestead after Zion NPS lifted closures from AUG 18th 2021 flash flooding. Zion received more than 4" of rain and all 5 of Utah's National Parks received heavy rain and flash flooding. Lots of pools and mud and we were told by rangers it was the worst they had seen it and this was 2 weeks prior to the flash flood that happened on the 18th. We had 5 in our group and it took over 12 hours exiting the narrows.

I would never tie off to a tree that close to that type edge . I would sling from 15-20 ft back , I’ve had trees fail before !

I definitely wouldn’t argue with you as you can never be too redundant. There are several variations to the big rappel but I believe most people rappel from this tree.

@@RyanGreenroomProductions That is just not the best tree to use. It is too precariously clinging to the rocks at the lip. I would have used another more solidly rooted tree to 'belay' that tree.

Amazed the Zion NPS allows using that tree as an anchor for the repel. Should be multiple bolts set up for that.

So the start of this canyon is outside of Zion NPS boundary which I believe includes this first rappel. Most of Englestead is bolt free and left in a natural state.

Great photography! What was the change in temperature like? I'll bet it was better when you were dry compared to when you were wet. Did someone keep readings as you descended?

Always a bit cooler in the canyon but we did this trip on August so it was plenty warm. We had a couple guys in wetsuits but it was doable without. If I had to guess, probably 80-90’s at canyon rim and 70’s in canyon.

Super dangerous rapping off a tree with exposed roots that close to the edge. And never tie off 3' up the trunk, much better at the base.

It is in Paige AZ. There is upper and lower Antelope Canyon. They are toured by the Navjo Indians only. So with the time and money though

First and last man in this group were most experienced. We didn’t want any of the middle guys to have to worry about it and last guy would be rappelling unprotected on a fiddle stick and didn’t want to risk a snag and pulling the stick out. We have had several people say second to last should have brought it down but we felt the way we did it was safe and didn’t have any issues in this run.
