What are English and Creative Writing about? (believe you can format thing as bold The English major offers students the foundations of close reading, formal analysis, literary history, critical theory, research strategies, and rigorous, respectful debate. On the other hand, the English and Creative Writing major enables students to experience the historical, traditional, and innovative aspects of literature in English, and the relationship between critical reading, creative writing, and translation.
What can you do with a degree in English or English and Creative Writing? English majors have a variety of career options available to them, because the skills you learn in expository writing and literature analysis-like creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability- are highly transferrable and valued by employers. Many English majors go to graduate school for MFAs, PhDs, or both. Others go to work in publishing, the arts, nonprofit sector, business, or become public school teachers through our teacher education track; and still others go into law or politics and public service.
Who are the students in these programs? Students of Iowa’s English Department come from diverse backgrounds and are highly engaged readers and writers. They are interested in a range of studies including short stories, novels, YA literature, poetry, and nonfiction. Other students are drawn to criticism, scholarship, and multimedia.
What kinds of experiences would I have in these programs? Our students enjoy being part of a thriving community of writers and readers that extends across the campus and throughout the city.
