Love that quotation from Ruskin. Hard to find that dedication to quality today!

Dedication to quality comes from expectation of it. Modern people prefer "more and cheaper" to "less but better". How many would agree to a twice smaller house, for the sake of it being beautifully made of stone?

Our house is British arts and crafts. Built in 1912. I was told by the historical society that it is British and not American. Our whole house is made from tiger maple. We love it.

It's funny, I don't think the "arts & crafts" thing came to France in quite the same way (and I don't recall it being a movement here), but go to places like Crotoy and other coastal towns, and even Bois-le-Roi near Fontainebleau (two places I've personally seen these things), and you'll definitely see arts & crafts-inspired principles, but with French style. Fun video, I hadn't even considered how different the movement was in the UK as compared to the US.

Although stylistically the Arts and Crafts Movement and the École des Beaux-Arts seem to have little in common, philosophically they are both very much products of 19thC Romanticism. Both movements looked to the architecture of the past and tried to synthesize a vernacular with a distinct national identity. Both movements created buildings where sculptural elements, murals, mosaics, etc. were integral.

Art Nouveau *is* the French (and many other countries) expressions of the Arts and Crafts Movement
@RonRobertson-lafrance
@RonRobertson-lafrance 20 дней назад
@@drakehallbradleygardens I thought about that, but Art Nouveau went everywhere, but the particular arts & crafts movements of the UK and the US didn't really gain so much traction outside of those two countries. Art Nouveau is pretty distinctive from Arts and Crafts to me, even if there are some common elements (particularly with natural forms).

Underneath any style in architecture lies mathematics. Gothic in Europe originated in France as a result of the Crusades. The Arabs owned most of the ancient temples. The study of these temples gave rise to trigonometry. Which allowed the construction of high walls and other typical details of the Gothic style. Therefore, Gothic is a first revival of Antiquity.

Hi Brent. Here's an idea for a video - when does a style become a style? For example, when Charles Rennie Mackintosh first started building houses his "style" never really existed before. To many, it probably looked weird at the time but now it can be classified as a "style". I would think that this would be a similar process to what happened at the time with Impressionist paintings - when they first appeared they were considered just "random globs of paint" but are now recognized as a beautiful style of artwork.

Does keying a scarfed timber make it stronger, or is that a craftsmanship point? I understand keying with arches but on scarfs that’s a new one for me

Hi Brent, great video. Actually, the old Palace burned down in 1834. The first stone for the rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster was laid on April 27th, 1840 by the wife of Charles Barry, the Architect. The House of Lords first sat in their new chamber in 1847 and the House of Commons in 1852.

Hi Brent. So where would you place Architects like Charles Rennie Mackintosh in the pantheon of styles? His designs were very "modern" for the times but they don't seem to be "Arts and Crafts" based.
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 21 день назад
Good question. I think Macintosh is part of that movement. Moved away from Victorian ideals and was interested in new ideas. I wouldn't say he was an A&C leader but was definitely a new voice.

I know that we like to label - have to label - movements or styles but I don’t think they ever neatly encapsulate the birth and development what actually occurred. These styles evolved and differed between its proponents who also took inspiration from one another. Being in the UK, we are perhap naturally focussed upon the UK movements and we have spent a lot of time visiting these homes as well as places like the Victoria and Albert Museum thus hopefully getting great insight into all aspects. One point which is overlooked is that, for some, the Arts and Crafts movement was essentially a social movement. People such as Morris wanted, primarily even, to change the lot of the ordinary, the factory worker, man. It’s one of the peculiarities that resulted that the people who benefited from the much improved working and living conditions could not afford the pieces they were making but could afford the mass production pieces they left behind. But Morris and others were deeply committed socialists; am I right in thinking that this differs from the US proponents? There was, this month, an auction sale of one man’s collection of superb pieces of furniture, interiors, jewellery, ceramics etc and many/most could be described as Arts and Crafts. Most pieces exceeded many-fold their estimates to demonstrate,e I hope, that there is still a great appreciation of quality. If I could, I would have bought a lot but could only really get near a very few pieces. One of the favourite pieces I did win was a copper and brass candle sconce made by the Newlyn School - another movement who shared those socialist ideals as people like Morris.

Nice overview. That is such a great period, where the overdone Victorian decoration is pared down inside and out, and the materials speak for themselves. I was just noticing today how the grain in the central panels is matched on the 1931 gumwood closet doors in our guest room; clearly came from the same piece of wood. Natural wood in older homes is always a joy. The horizontal lines and clerestory windows really hit their stride with the Prairie style homes. Always fun to hear what you have to share; I hope many, many builders are listening!
