This is the best teaching of the Buddhist 5 precepts I have ever heard so far. I really enjoyed it. I took a lot of notes as well. Thank you very much.
Ven Hong, I was also foolish , going for higher level of meditation instead of morality, when practicing mette, because people were horrible to each other, my mind went to anger! So i started to practice morality. For several years, I never did reach a high level of meditation there after, however, my heart and mind are more peaceful. I am 73 now, perhaps in my next life i will attain more mindfulness. I have been practising for 44 years, morality, and have kept the 5 precepts, in that time.... Today is not done yet. I keep the five precepts for today only. 😊 May you be happy and free from suffering.
The Five Precepts: 1. Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures. (I do not wish others to harm or destroy my life. So I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures.) 2. Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from taking that which is not given. ( I do not wish others taking my things. So I undertake the precept to refrain from taking that which is not given.) 3. Kamesu micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct. (I do not wish others to indulge in sexual misconduct with Husband/wife. So I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct.) 4. Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech. ( I do not wish others to speak incorrect speech. so I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech.) 5. Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness. (I do not wish others to be careless with me. So I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness.)
I feel that morality is a social construct and only one rule is universal, which can be defined by one question... Does this action cause harm to another? If the answer is "yes" than regardless of social concepts of morality defined by society, it is immoral.
I'm very conflicted in this day and age about the idea that if you are kind, kindness will find you and vice versa. As an American woman, I am not seeing that in the powers that be and those around me.
Very organized and beneficial talks. I wish many more younger generations will have the opportunity to listen to this talk. Be motivated to keep the precepts and let this moral conduct be their life protection.
Hi I would really appreciate if someone told me: how are the five precepts understood in Theravada and Mahayana both historically and in the contemporary world. Also, who exactly are lay people or monastics within these two different types of Buddhism? Many thanks!
