English Bulldog struggles with long walks

@@filipusstewart you will love him/her. They are lovely dogs, full of personality. I have been lucky with Monte's health; he turns 10 in July. You just need to be careful, as they are more work than other dogs.

yup, i have a french bulldog, some years ago i met a guy in a park and he told me that out of nowhere his frenchie had a heart attack and died in that same park some week prior, always been cautious since, even tho the dog is in good shape for his age

It’s only that way because we humans bred those extremities into it. Bulldogs used to be much more athletic and healthy.

It doesn't look overweight, he looks like a healthy weight for a bulldog. Bulldogs ate just stubborn and don't wana walk or play sometimes.

We take our English Bulldog on walks too. We bring water. Even when it is cooler, he does the same thing your Bulldog does. Sometimes, I have to get the car to pick him up. I always bring water in a backpack. Even when it is in the evening - around 78 degrees and no sun - our Bulldog still wants to sit. lol

Paul Masters, I'm in Florida 2, I agree with all you said. AS for the harness, I think his may be on backwards! LOL The portion that goes around the neck - is around his shoulders! Big oops on that one! Ask a bully owner to help you adjust it - but first make sure THEIR bully's halter looks like it fits properly!

amanda lou TRUE!! Bulldogs only need 30 minutes of exercise a day and are prone to heatstroke. They need temps anywhere in between 68 to 74 degrees. Bulldogs are more lapdogs than anything else.

Yeah it really annoys me when I see people pushing their English Bulldogs to walk longer than around 30 minutes. Their bodies just can't handle it, and they know it which is why they rest. If you wanted a dog that would go on long walks you shouldn't have gotten an English bulldog

cassiemichelle03 lol...so true...and as Bulldogs age they end up sleeping most of the time...mine would sleep 24/7 if he didn't have to get up to eat and poop...;)

cassiemichelle03 I have two english bulldog (a male and female) they can walk and run for hours but only if the wather helps them. I took mine for longs walks when the temperature is less than 10 degrees celcius. longs walks of about 4 to 5 hours. but you are right if the dog is overheated he will try to rest to let his temperature go down a bit. the owner should not push him to keep walking when he tries to rest. i know about lots of dogs where killed for their owners for that.

BaxterBully 30 minutes of exercise a day..you do NOT over work a flat faced dog,unless you like it suffering and want it to die. Next time your car over heats, keep driving it,it's the same dam thing as making a english bulldog walking once it reaches its limit

BaxterBully is right and wrong on this. This bulldog is so out of shape he cant take super long walks. Bona0608 is right on that. But I believe Baxter's point is that the dog needs a health intervention, which it does. The dog is letting his master know he does not want to walk further - so stop. But if the owner were to have his bully lose about 10% of its body weight - and do this by 1. stopping all human food treats at table, 2. sticking to a good food, measured out, limiting treats to 3 a day - and 3. giving multiple short walks daily (treat when he gets home). If you have any question ask your vet. Generally, if you run your hand over his rib cage, can feel there is something solid in there but you cant easily count each rib, you are ok. Behind his rib cage there should be an area that is slightly smaller than the rib cage (bottom and sides). If you don't see that - help him/her drop a few pounds. Let the dog's behavior tell you how he/she is doing. If you see a happier more active pet - then you know you did well. That's how I got my bulldogs to live 50% longer than the 8 years the breed is advertised as an average life expectancy. Any time you are not sure - talk to your vet. P.S. if your dogs are maintained at a healthy weight, you can treat them more! I would break the rules only for pizza. My bullies got the crust (I never ate that), but not all at one time. i'd refrigerate the extra and use as treats over 2-3 days. Don't worry how hard they got, the bullies LOVED crunching them up! You'd keep your friend about 4 years longer doing this guys - its soooo worth it!

If you have to carry them all the time, u are pushing their limit and risking collapse all the time... bring a bottle of water with you and hose em down half way and you will be amazed how much more "stamina" they actually have... 2x english bully owner here.
