To celebrate the return to flight of the Ex-RAF examples of the type - here is a little appreciation video celebrating the Canberra PR9 aircraft which retired from RAF service in 2006 and has been sadly missed ever since.
It began its' career as a bomber, and went on to have an exceptional length of service, finally ending its' life as a Photo Reconnasance aircraft, which it performed exceptionally well being able to fly so high.
In this video we see it perform a taxi run in private hands at the Kemble Air Day 2007, followed by one of its' final airshow displays as an RAF aircraft the year before (2006) at the Waddington airshow. Included is the famous "blue note pass".

What an amazing aircraft. As a teen in the late 70's I remember these flying everyday over our house. Plus Victors, Hunters, Lightenings etc. You simply can't beat these 50's jets.

7:28 is one of the coolest sounds I have ever heard out of an airplane! Excellent video.

At Tengah in Singapore I watched in awe as an RNZAF Canberra looped-the-loop on take-off, still within the bounds of the airbase. This was about 1968. RAF was holding a celebration for the last operational flight of the Gloucester Meteor.

I served in a USMC tactical squadron at RNAFB Orlund Norway in the early winter 1980. One day, on my way to chow a RAF Canberra made a simulated attack on the airfield. It made incredible high speed s pattern level turns at about 400 feet AGL. It flew right over me, gaping at it, looking in its bomb bay. I'll bet they could prove surprise on the BB camera film.

I have just visited the gate guardian at RAF WYTON after seeing the Canberra at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre and just had to see it fly. Thank you for your video. I make fun videos around RAF bases and I’m stunned and fascinated by the CANBERRA 🧸🇬🇧

The Blue Note is the moaning sound the aircraft makes as it hammers past at high speed

I served in the RAF and worked on the PR9, and PR7 Canberras as an Air Camera Fitter during the early 1980s while based at RAF Wyton. The PR9 was definitely the cream of the fleet, although in my opinion there were too few of them available to 1 PRU which resulted in numerous role changes on a daily basis. Still a beautiful aircraft, with a unique and wonderful sound, both on the ground and in flight.

This is one of the PR9s that I worked on during 1962/63 when I was on 58 Squadron at RAF Wyton. All the squadron's PR9s, were reassigned to 39 Squadron which was then, I think, based in Cyprus. We had a big push to get Flap and Aileron shroud modifications completed before the aircraft were redeployed. I think 39 Squadron, having re-equipped with our PR9s, of which XH135 was one, then relocated to Malta. It was certainly a great aircraft with the most powerfu versions of the Avon engine used on the type.

Thank you airshow vision, that really did bring back some wonderful memories! The first time I saw and got close up to a PR9 was way back in the late 70s when I was an air cadet in the Air Training Corps and we had a fantastic summer camp at RAF Wyton. We had a superb tour of the aircraft hosted by one of the operational pilots who apologized for the fishy smell having bought a substantial load of freshly caught fish from Malta! The photo interpretation work that was involved was amazing.

+Louis Gordon I think the Navigator seat is just behind and below so I guess to make space? (I have no idea how they are designed but I saw Pilot / Navigator and saw the little hatch)

The navigator sat in the nose seat, entering by swinging the nose cone out to get in. very claustrophobic! the cameras were also operated from there.

a truly wonderful aircraft, The pilot of XH134 was S/L Terry cairns, his length of service in the RAF was extended so he could see the Canberra out of service, I saw 134 at Waddington a few years ago, and as an ex RAF Wyton guy, sent my air show programme to him at Marham and got the pictures in the programme signed by all the aircrew.My late father used to work on the Canberra, and told me a story about one taking pictures of a U2 spyplane..................from above, really upset the USAF

The canberra bomber was a cold war mercy contract from the us to the uk military aviation complex to keep it going when the vagaries of the cold war were unable to sustain the political will in war-weary britain to make realistic outlays and social sacrifices for a true weapon system that actually would be able to outfly any opposition and accomplish a valid war purpose. It sucked money from other, better peoples and projects for no good reason. Its unreasonable production and (ab)use hurt both countries national security, wasted a generation of pilots and crew resources, etc. at a time when such waste could be/may still be catastrophic. The Canberra's obvious obsolescence on rollout showed our enemies we weren't seriously defending ourselves.

So why do NASA still fly them?

Oh! So silly of course one was laying the irony on with a trowel. How droll.
@jeffwalther3935
@jeffwalther3935 3 года назад
@@BernardLS It was obsolete for the strategic nuclear war combat role, but an available jet airframe to be used more as rugged, no frills, general use, high altitude vehicle of any type with plenty of cheap, spare parts and people who useta work and fly on them too, so it was an economical choice, not just an aeronautical performance/quality choice-based decision. "No bucks, no buck rodgers." Primarily though, remember, NASA could get any suitible US military vehicle, its true, objective, real time, performance records and data at no or lowest costs too. The Canberra's size, inobtrusive looks, relatively mediochre, semi-high speeds and range made it just the right choice for their unique needs from what's available and other available makes and models.
@BernardLS

@@jeffwalther3935 Ah! the merit of mediocrity. Everybody has an opinion and ours will probably always differ on the subject of the Canberra. Do you have an opinion on the Antonov AN2? Once said to be ‘like Marmite, it is either loved or hated’.

There's something distinctly odd about a bomber where the pilot climbs on board, takes off, and proceeds to throw it around the sky as if it were a fighter.
@airshowvision
@airshowvision Год назад
That's what the flying commitees at farnborough thought back in the 1960's when they stopped the test pilots from rolling the Vulcan. Shame!
