The aircraft was renowned for its capabilities as an interceptor; Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots described it as "being saddled to a skyrocket". English Electric was later incorporated into the British Aircraft Corporation, later marques being developed and produced as the BAC Lightning. First flight 4 August 1954 (P.1A)

Brilliant. Thanks for posting this. The greatest ever jet fighter to serve the RAF. I have so many fantastic memories of them with 56 Sqn at Akrotiri in the late 1960's and never tire of watching the 'Frightening'.

Marvellous footage of the P1 and the P1B.....thanks for posting.... saw my first Lightning display when i was 11 years old i am now 56 years old and still regularly attend airshows but have yet to see any aircraft as exciting or awe inspiring as a Lightning in all its glory at full power.....

Indeed and most people just don't get it but the Swedish did with the single engine Drakken, as it was the only thing that came close to an EEL. The Typhoon flies in the sky with all the grace of a Matador but the EEL split the sky and filled it with fire, an absolutely astounding aircraft. I can only imagine what a four ship launch of EEL's with reheat would be 😎😎

Fantastic. The best video of Lightnings I have seen on here and good music. Always was and always will be my favourite aircraft. Spent most of my teens up at Binbrook watching these in the 80’s. Thanks for sharing.

Special and different design, I loved the lightning since I saw it and read about it in a book when I was a kid in early 1980s.

Tailstrike at 6:45? When the best of British meant something! She's a wonderful bird, commonly referred to though as 'the Frightening'
@Streaky100001
@Streaky100001 5 лет назад
Looked like tail strike, though it may have been deliberate if that's film from the flight testing in the early days of the lightning prior to going into RAF operational service, there would be a period where she would be operated by a test and evaluation squadron to essentially write the pilots handbook for the aircraft, one of the tests common to new aircraft is to see what the slowest possible speed the aircraft will leave the ground at is, this is done by setting off down the runway and pulling back on the stick almost immediately, the nose is raised as soon as it will come up, the idea is to raise the nose until the tail is just about touching the ground (i.e. the best angle of attack you can possibly achieve without smacking the tail into the ground) and hold it there until the aircraft lifts off, this will give you lift off at the slowest possible speed for that configuration of the aircraft. To avoid damage to the airframe they typically place a sacrificial metal block under the tail, so it is this that hits the ground, not the aircraft structure. This being said I can't be certain that this is what's happening here, could just be a genuine tail strike.

and @ 0:08 but they could be cleaning the runway with 40,000 lb of thrust. The runway surfaces take a beating.
@sichere
@sichere 10 месяцев назад
@@Streaky100001 You're spot on but I don't think it is a deliberate tail strike or the one @ 0:08 - could be the same take off.- as there doesn't appear to be a strike plate. It could be a dusty bit of runway- hopefully 😂😂
@Streaky100001
@Streaky100001 10 месяцев назад
@@sichere I hadn't spotted the one at 0:08... That's definitely not the same takeoff though, different aircraft, the one at 0:08 is the English Electric P1, which was an early prototype that later was developed into the lightning, while the one at 6:45 is a bonefide lightning. Look at the shape of the noses for the clearest difference between the two :) You're right that there's no obvious strike plate, it's a little hard to tell with older grainy footage like this though, but you've definitely got a point. I think certainly the incident at 6:45 has to have been a strike, at the point of "strike" it looks like there's a slight... wobble, for want of a better term, from the aircraft as though it did touch the runway.

I lived near RAF Wattisham. Still got photos of the Lightnings taken from emergency field gates... Last time I saw one flying was '84, over the East Coast when sailing from Grimsby to Gt Yarmouth. Awesome aircraft. What is the large aircraft on the runway during the low level pass?

4:45 I can’t say for sure, but what caught my eye, besides 4 engines, is the rear landing gear and it seems to have cropped / straight wingtips. maybe B-17 but endings ... I don’t remember those they have p.s. sorry for google translation
