By or Until? "I will be there by 5 pm" or "until 5 pm"? What is the difference? In this English lesson, I talk about these two time prepositions, giving many different examples to highlight their meaning. By the time you take the quiz on this grammar lesson, you will know when to use by and until. You can take the quiz here: www.engvid.com...

What you're talking about is the Past Perfect and it's used to refer to an action in the past that happened shortly before another past action. Example:"I had worked until 7 pm that day when my sister came visit me."

After thinking a lot, I got one more answer. The word " until " defines a VERB, it belongs to the verb while the word " by " it defines a NOUN. 1. I worked until 7.00 pm - What did i do until 7.00 pm ? - The answer is " worked " its a verb. 2. I need to return my movie by January 12th . - What I have to return by January 12th The answer is " movie " its a NOUN.

@ИльясМаметов-и1о
How I remembered. I look at the verb and if it means process before certain time, you should use "unill" (for example study, work and etc). If verb means something happend at or before particular time (for example finish. finish is not a process) you should use "by"

Hi Madam, Kindly correct me if my below understanding is wrong. Your quick reply will be highly appreciated. 1) I need your report until Friday. Which one is correct, i) On Friday you can have it back ii) After Friday you can have it back. If ii) is correct then please describe the reason. 2) The store is closed until March. = In March the store opens. 3) I am here until 31st December 2021. = From 31st December 2021 I will not be here. 4) I am here until Friday. = From Friday I will not be here. 5) I am here until 2005. = From 2005 I will not be here.

@osx101 You will use 'by', as 'until which time' doesn't sound right. Also, by which time = by that time = at that time. If you want to use 'until', we will have to make some changes to your phrase, such as: "She will be here at five, and until she arrives, I expect you to have finished your work."

@tomwatts8606
@tomwatts8606 9 лет назад
Sonal Savaliya Yes you can. It has a different meaning than I studied until 7PM though." I studied at 7PM" means that you can began studying at 7PM and the time at which you stop studying or if you stop studying is unknown. "I studied until 7PM" means that you started studying at an unspecified time and you stopped at 7PM.
