With this song you really have to keep in mind that it's not Orelsan talking. It's a suicidal man how attack literally everyone in the society before he go.

1:41 "Aujourd'hui je ne mettrai ni ma chemise ni ma cravate" (Today I won't put my shirt on, nor will I put my tie on) → He's basically saying won't get ready for work (because he's tired of the society, as he explains throughout the song) 2:24 "Adieu les représentants grassouillets qui ne boivent jamais d'eau comme s'ils ne voulaient pas se mouiller" (Goodbye chubby reps who never drink water like they don't want to get their hands dirty) → Se mouiller = to get wet (literally), but here it means "to get one's hands dirty" 5:41 "(...) qui grattent les RTT pour payer leurs vacances d'été" (...who are working overtime to pay for their summer holidays) → So the bosses Orelsan is talking about are working overtime (and get paid for that) to pay for their summer holidays. That's basically what RTT is. 8:25 "Leur seul but dans la vie, c'est la troisième mi-temps" (Their only life goal is the 3rd half-time) → In France (and probably other french-speaking countries), the 3rd half-time is the drinking time after the end of a football match in the refreshment bar 9:22 (starts at 9:11 actually) Orelsan is talking about the current fascists who are imitating the SS because their life sucks (and they couldn't find anything else to do with their life but to make other people's life shit as well); that's why he tells them to find a hobby (occupation) (SS stands for Schutzstaffel, a nazi organisation which was originally meant to protect Hitler, and then got more and more repressive against the Jews) I hope it helped you understand better this masterpiece. Orelsan is saying a lot of things like always.

@Djory Krache In the song, Orelsan says "quand tu te fais défenestrer" (could be translated by 'when someone will defenestrate you') implying murder. Here the tie is compared to a dog's leach. 5:41 "(...) qui grattent les RTT pour payer leurs vacances d'été" In fact, Orelsan says that the boss goes to hollydays using the money they were supposed to pay to the employees for their overtime working..

Perd pas ton temps, that's what we call, the lost in translation, there is a good reason why only music is universal and is accountable for success. French people listen to English music not because they understand, and the same goes with the Americans or British listening to french music, though the phenomenon is an epiphenomenon the other way around. Orelsan punchlines won't ever resonate the same way in an American's mind unless he half breed. Same goes for Kameloott. There is a good reason why we french people export so little of of cultural industry.

It's more like "not getting involved" which gives the following : "These plump reps, never drinking water*, as if they really don't want to care about anything around them." Meaning their hand are dirty, due to inaction. *Quite assuming is Alcohol (or Soda) instead. Beside, getting 'wet' combine quite well with 'water' because it's like they don't want to 'swet'... As getting them involved would forced them to lift their ass. All this is reinforce by the next sentences : "Salesmen who smell of aftershave (alcohol) and cassoulet (plump reps) "Put mayonnaise on their briefcase they'll eat it up."

When Orelsan wrote it, he was thinking about "The 25th Hour" with Edouard Norton and his famous monologue. The guy wants to commits suicide because he hates himself deeply (Orelsan even said in an interview he had taken off a part of the song where he admits the character hates himself because he finds a little bit of him in everyone he speaks of). The character hates himself so much and he's so desperate that he transfers his hatred on everyone by using clichés, just to justify his act. Even though he doesn't really think that way. A really powerful song that sadly was misunderstood by a lot of people who took it as it is without trying to understand the meaning. Thanks for your videos :) ! This song is a tribute to Edward Norton tirade in "25th hour" from Spike Lee. Orelsan tell the story of a guy who wants to speak his truth to everyone, every community take a hit, so obviously he upsets friends,colleagues and family: he's commiting a social suicide, and at the end we can ear a gun shot: the guy commit suicide. Everybody can agree with some of this lines and also feel targeted by some others. Orelsan doesn't tell at loud what everyone think, he enunciates the clichés that an instable man think, mad against the entire world, but madder against himself: he hates him so much to feel like that, he takes his own life. Anyone will say that Spike Lee or Edward Norton wish death to all those communities discribed in their movie, it's the same with Orelsan, he is not that angry guy described here. PS: In "Try to open your golden parachute when you defenestred" defenestred stand for thrown through the window or for someone who jumped through a window (window is fenêtre in french and fenestre in old french (in french forêt is forest in english and in old french^^)). So this line can be a warning for bosses who don't respect the rights of their employees, and keeps push them to make more money, employees who might retaliate by throwing their boss from the windows of their high towers. It refers also to a scandal wich happened a year or two before the song came out, 35 suicides in total in the public telecom compagny who was about to became private: Orange. Employees were bullied and psychologicaly harassed, some of them jumped from their office window, golden parachutes were given to some executives despite this. A few sentences after "and play cowardly virgins when they get sequestred" same period they were riots in compagnies (Air France, Goodyear...) angry employees kidnapped their bosses to get the medias attention. Then "those small bosses... who scrape the RTT to pay for holidays" those bosses miscount intentionally the overtime of their employees to make more profits (half an hour here half an hour there on a douzen employees you can go to St Tropez's beach instead of Brighton's)

4:18 to defenestrate is to throw out of a window orelsan is using the expression "golden parachute" in a literal way, like in some sort of pun, as a way to say 'try to use your golden parachute when the angry workers you've been exploiting for decades will throw you out of a window'

RTT stands for "réduction du temps de travail" ("reduction of working time" in English). In France, the legal working time is 35 hours a week since 2000 (before it was 39h). Orelsan says CEOs force their employees to work harder so that they (CEOs) can earn more money and have great holidays.

I don't know if anyone already explained this, but I haven't seen it anywhere so : At 09:04, the "third half" you didn't understand is a reference to a football match. The game has 2 half, the 3rd one is usually the time when we drink and celebrate after the game (we call that in french "La troisième mi-temps", but I'm sure there must be a word in english for that, because drinking after a game isn't reserved to french people ahah). That's why there is a bottle at that moment on the video. People from the South of France are known for their love of Football and Pastis 51 (the alcohol shown in the video), and they love to drink that for the "3rd half"

This is an iconic song from him, with basically references to all the social class in france. Very hard song for people who don't live here. This is the song of someone who's just disappointed by the system and who's critisizing the France he lives in. By the way, just discover your channel and really like the way you comment Orelsan's songs (i only look at these videos at the moment). Orelsan is one of the best french rapper I think. The thing with this song is that half of the lyrics are plays on words mixing french puns/expressions within the lyrics, along with a good dose of stereotypes about all different parts of france and their people. So it's pretty hard to get the full value of each punchline with a simple translation, it goes way deeper than that.

11:40 The CGT was the biggest and one of the oldest (1895) union in france, nowaday there's an other one on par, the CFDT, but essentially if you think union in france, you think CGT. And indeed what he's criticizing is that rather than actually making changes, they're content just complaining, posing, and drinking ("transforming protests into parties"). 14:03 Here it's more of a meta commentary on the situation, it's not about disliking or liking the community, but rather about how some of its members express themselves, in particular how aggressive feminists groups like femen are or how asking to be treated equally as normal people seems at odds with some of the imagery they're going with, you might remember Key & Peele's "Office Homophobe" episode for a similar take 18:11 It's not just a gambling company, at the time he wrote that song it was a government owned gambling company with a monopoly on most types of gambling, in france and its territories, so he's blaming the government for creating this situation at the same time.

The following words are important for the video but the beginning of the sentence itself is even more important. I'm very glad that someone would really consider this "a character" and not Orelsan's personnal point of view. You see, for a long time (and by that i mean 10 years), Orelsan was attacked by french journalists for being a prick in every way, because of what he wrote in his songs. They were always making a link between the violence of his words and his personnal thoughts. That always triggered me hard, so i thank you for being lucid.

RTT ("Réduction du Temps de Travail" - Working Time reduction) is when employees did extra hours of work regarding the max. amount of working time defined by their contract. They can cumulate those extra hours in order to get extra days of paid holidays. So yes some people really "cheat" their working time in order to get those extra paid days, particularly in higher positions where they can just be there at their desk doing strictly nothing but cumulate those extra hours.
@gina-te813

So many subtleties in this song that can only be grasped if you understand the double meaning, or polysemy, of the words Orelsan uses. Only 2 examples : 9:16 : "becoming neo-nazi because you had no passion, instead of playing the SS, find an occupation". SS is how nazi soldiers are commonly called in France, and occupation surely means to find a job, but it is also the name of the period when France was occupied by Germany during WWII. 13:18 : "adieu à la ménagère [...] prête à gober la merde qu'on lui vend, qui pose pas de question tant qu'elle consomme". "Ménagère" is another word for "femme au foyer" in French, so housewife. But is is used mostly in one marketing concept called "Ménagère de moins de 50 ans", which is considered the main target by the advertisement industry (because they are doing the family shopping, so buying for more than one). The whole section here, using this marketing-related word for housewife, talking about the shit that is "sold" to them is all pointing at consumer society. A great text for a very disturbing song, but this was the intention.

I think the best title of Orelsan. This guy is a genius. You should know that when the title came out (2010/2011) it was super unwelcome by the general public. Orelsan has been charged with carrying hate messages. However, he explained in an interview that this song is a succession of clichés about French society. He explained that he himself finds it ridiculous to reduce people to a group, a cliché. Basically, the title is the perfect example of what not to do. Basically he says that the narrator also finds himself a little in these clichés and that's what drives him to suicide. He wanted to add an explanation at the end of the title but for him the fact that the guy shoots himself is explicit. intrld.com/paragraphe-supprime-orelsan-suicide-social/

"The third half" is the after-party people does after a soccer match, which is split in two halves of 45 minutes. People would go and do the third half at home drinking alcohol, this is why there's a bottle of liquor in the written text.
@Ad___Astra
@Ad___Astra 2 года назад
8:50 the third half is a reference to the football haltimes. In the small football clubs there were everytimes aperitif time after the match, the first halftime is the normal break in a match, the second one is for the end of the match and the third one is for the aperitif time. French southerners are reputed to be notorious alcoholics and any pretext is good to drink an aperitif. So in the Orelsan's song, the expression "third half" therefore means that southerners have the sole purpose in life of drinking an aperitif. I hope that my english with the google translate help are understandable ^^.

the criticism that orelsan carries here is the fact that there are problems everywhere, so he criticizes everything that is open to criticism to show that there is an element of idiot in everything that exists and that there is no point in choosing a camp (examples with lgbt communities which are therefore not directly attacked by orelsan). In m'y opinion. Good vidéo liked it

@takanomemihawk7860

Orelsan is not giving his point of view in it. He said it multiple times It is the point of views of someone so angry a depressive that he lashes out on everybody, not able to differentiate anymore between his point of view (anger) and reality. At the end of the song, so angry at everything he comits suicide. So... it is more a critique of how it is easy in this world to see everything in black instead of being nuanced... which leads to dramatic events (here suicide) Orelsan ne donne pas son point de vue sur la société dans ce texte.

Third half is a reference around soccer or rugby. One game is split in two halves time. So the third half is when the athletes are partying in the locker room. It´s usually a way to define a party after a hard day job for example.

Defenestrate means to remove smbd from a position of power, but also in this case, it means when you jump off a window (fenêtre is a window in french) to kill youself, or you get pushed and be killed. Like if somebody pushed you on a window to kill you, its called "defenestrate" its a game word with the golden parachute, which is ofc not a real parachute so it wont open if you just "defenestrate" them. My english sucks, so I hope it's clear. Also, when he speaks about sequestration, it actually happened in France, a company was closing and the employees did not agree with that so they sequestrated the HRD and the CEO I think, and they were so scared you cannot imagine lmao And commme ooooonn, it's not Gucci, its Burberry, you should know that as an English guy :D you should also know what SS are as UK declared the war against Germany in 1939 :P

Qui ne boivent jamais d'eau comme s'ils ne voulaient pas se mouiller. "Se mouiller" , to get wet ( litterally translated ) . "Se mouiller" is an expression that means "to get involved". So these sales representatives ( ces commerciaux ) drink water to avoid alcohol so as to stay in the strait way, to behave. They don't want to get involved in any way and they fear of being labelled as people who would speak/act again establishment. This song , partly, is against woke culture and was written before the impact of woke debate in France.

RTT are free days that are still paid by your work they are not holidays but break days that most French workers can get but seems to be reduced more and more just like holidays so the « superiors » can get more money and free days off the workers back. Third half is actually just a soccer/football term where some supporter got the habits to drink. SS were literally Nazi soldier. It’s self explanatory.

The fact that the rich people or low moral human being would roll on you if they could for profite, or to get your place if possible. It's pretty dark, but really accurate of the world we live in today. At some point I used to think like the lyrics of this song. Like... "what is the point of anything?"
