EIM Dough
Welcome to English in a Minute - From Home.
Dough is a mixture of water and flour used to make baked goods. But how else do Americans use this word?
J: Aw, man! I just realized I don’t have enough money to buy a new Sevendust face covering.
A: Sevendust is your favorite band. I can send you some dough. How much do you need?
J: That would be great! I only need $20.
A: A $20 face mask?!
J: ….I have to get their new album, too!
In this case, “dough” means money. Americans also use other food-related words to talk about money, too, like ‘bread,’ ‘bacon’ and my favorite* - ‘cheese.’
I’m suddenly very hungry!
And that’s English in a Minute
