"Approaching English-medium Education in Multilingual University Settings through the ROAD-MAPPING framework"
UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics Research Seminar, University College London, 11th January 2022 (Tue), 16:00-17:30, held on Zoom
Dr Emma Dafouz, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain
Hosted by Prof John Gray, UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics
Two decades into the 21st century, the use of English as vehicular language for higher education for the sake of internationalisation is a growing reality. However, under the seemingly homogenising label of English-medium education (EME) we find a wide range of complex and highly situated phenomena that come in different shapes and forms. To examine these multi-faceted EME realities in a comprehensive and holistic manner, this session will argue for the use of a theoretical framework known under the acronym of ROAD-MAPPING (Dafouz and Smit, 2016, 2020). Anchored conceptually in sociolinguistic and ecolinguistic approaches as well as in language policy research, this session will explain ROAD-MAPPING and then illustrate its wide usage by elaborating, firstly, on how it can be applied to describe EME in different countries and, secondly, on how it can be used to manage university policies regarding internationalisation.

At present, Emma is Principal Investigator in the international project known as SHIFT (www.ucm.es/shift/) funded by the Spanish Government, which examines students’ understanding and development of disciplinary literacies in English-taught business programs.
