Pigeons have traditionally been fed all-seed diets. Commercially available seed mixes for pigeons may contain 2-5 different kinds of seeds. However, the seeds tend to be high-fat and nutrient-deficient and are not the same kinds of seeds that wild pigeons eat. Seeds are also deficient in calcium, vitamin A, and other nutrients. Many times, these seed mixes are fed as the only source of food, leading to ill health and potentially, a shortened lifespan. Seeds can be part of a pigeon’s diet but should not comprise the entire diet.
There are pigeon diets available that contain some seed plus grains. Some are also enriched with brewer's yeast plus vitamins and minerals. Different diet formulations exist for performance birds, resting birds, and breeding birds. The problem with offering pigeons and doves diets containing seeds is that they selectively eat only the seeds and do not get any of the nutritional benefits from the pellets.
Several types of commercially formulated pelleted diets in various colors, shapes, and sizes have been developed to meet all birds’ nutritional needs. Compared with parrots (hook-billed birds), pigeons and doves have very small beaks and do best with small-sized pellets. Hand raised babies are the easiest to start on a pelleted diet. Pellets should ideally represent approximately 50% of a pigeon's diet along with small amounts of seed and fresh produce.
The Modena pigeon is an average sized bird with very beautiful appearance. It is mainly bred to present a striking curvy shape with a prominent chest, uplifted wings and tail carried high.
Total impression of this bird is being round and proud. It comes in many different colors in two main varieties, Gazzi and Schietti.
The Gazzi is a pied marking with the head and portion of the throat, the wings and the tail colored and the rest of the bird being white. Schietti’s are non-pied.
Average body height of the Modena pigeon is about 24 cm, and their mature body weight is about 350 grams.
The Modena pigeon is known for its elegant and refined appearance. It has a slender body, long neck, and small head with a short beak. The eyes are large and round, giving the bird an alert and intelligent expression. The feathers on the neck and breast are tight and smooth, while those on the back and wings are more loose and flowing. One of the most distinctive features of the Modena pigeon is its striking coloration. The bird can come in a variety of colors and patterns, including black, blue, red, yellow, silver, and even white. Some Modena pigeons have intricate patterns or markings on their feathers, adding to their beauty and appeal.
The Modena pigeon is classified as a medium-sized bird, with an average weight of 450-550 grams. It stands approximately 25 cm tall and has a wingspan of around 45 cm.
Despite its relatively small size, the Modena pigeon is known for its impressive agility and grace in the air. Modena pigeons are known for their gentle and affectionate personalities. They are social birds that enjoy the company of other pigeons and humans alike. They are generally calm and easygoing, making them a good choice for first-time pigeon owners. However, they do require regular attention and interaction to remain healthy and happy.
Breeding Modena pigeons requires careful selection and management to maintain the desired traits and characteristics of the breed.
The birds should be selected based on their appearance, health, and temperament, with a focus on maintaining the unique coloration and feather patterns of the breed.
Modena pigeons are known for their excellent breeding abilities, with females typically laying 2-3 eggs per clutch. Breeding pairs should be housed in separate cages to prevent fighting and injury, and the eggs should be incubated for around 18 days until they hatch.
Modena pigeons require relatively little maintenance compared to other pets. They should be housed in a spacious aviary or loft that provides ample room for exercise and socialization.
The birds should be fed a high-quality diet of pigeon feed, supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables as needed.
Modena pigeons also require regular grooming to maintain their sleek and elegant appearance.
They should be given regular baths to keep their feathers clean and shiny, and their nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent overgrowth.
The Modena pigeon is a very beautiful bird. Most of the birds of this breed are calm and gentle, which make them excellent for show.
Although some males can be aggressive. As a stockier variety of domesticated pigeon, the pairs sometimes have fertility problems.
Along with raising for show purposes, the breed is also very good for raising as pets. Average lifespan of these birds is about 7 to 10 years.
However, review full breed profile of these birds in the chart below.
