Sisters and Brothers of America, It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of the millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects. My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honour of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: ‘As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.’ The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world, of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: ‘Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to Me.’ Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

let me totally honest here, when i was growing this was back when the west was the coolest place for every kid and people used to criticize india a lot and i too thought that how backwards and poor my country india was. But the more I know about the rich and beautiful history of my motherland and the huge amount of great and legendary people that it had given birth to, the more i feel so proud to have been born in such a wonderful country. I'm so glad I watched this video, it made me open up my eyes about Hinduism as well.

It's a great speech, that explains the essence of Hinduism, Sanatana Dharma, and how it differs from other religions of this world. It's not attached to contradictions and to notions of right and wrong, but rather to the common points between different ideas and what's useful to each person in their personal journey to the goal. Theism, atheism, pantheism, idolatry, philosophy, non-dualism, dualism, rituals, meditation, material life... everything has a place in Hinduism. It respects personal choices and other religions too. That's what we need for the future if we want a peaceful world.

It was an extempore speech without teleprompter. It shows the genius in action, unlike current so called orators where speeches are written by someone else and teleprompter is used to deliver them.

This is not his voice; it’s dramatization. The only recording of his voice was done by Maharaja of Mysore on a gramophone record. However, over time that record had lost all its fidelity. In that age, the technology wasn’t advanced to record sounds either fidelity and persistence.

I was pleasantly surprised by how clear his English is... I recently found out that Yogananda was born on the year Vivekananda first came to America in 1893! Which I thought was pretty cool!!! Anyway loving hearing him speak right now... paused it to quickly write this haha Ok best get back to it!!!!!! ✨️✨️✨️ [Edit~Time] I've listened to it fully now and I so appreciate what I have just taken in to my consciousness. I even had a thought, constant repetition is the key to drilling things in/letting them sink in to our sub conscious and consciousness and so imagine listening to this every day and if you can, the same time every day! Our minds would be ready each day and it would soon fill up our consciousness with the truth!!! I am going to accept that challenge, maybe not the same time every day... Thinking of Swami Vivekananda, the patron saint of the high school (SVHS) I attended in Nadi, Fiji, I quote 3 of his many famous sayings: 1. Arise, Awake, and Stop Not till the Goal is Reached ( our school motto). 2. True education is the manifestation of the perfection in man. 3. Spirituality is the manifestation of divinity in man.

This is not speech of Swami Vivekananda .. This speech is emotions of all the world . Swami Vivekanand is a man full of tolerance and favor of every relegion but not the relegion who has criticise his natives .... Solute to Swami Vivekananda 👏👏👏👏👏

No recorded voice of Swami Vivekananda has survived, unfortunately. There is a recording of Swami Abhedananda in You Tube, in Bengali. I understand that is the only recording of one of the direct disciples of Paramahansa Ramakrishna.
