Today Uncle Stonnie is working with Leroy, a nice English Springer Spaniel puppy and discussing whether or not an English Springer Spaniel my be right for your lifestyle.
"The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized compact dog. Its coat is moderately long with feathering on the legs and tail. It is a well proportioned, balanced dog with a gentle expression. This breed represents perhaps the greatest divergence between working and show lines of any breed of dog. A field-bred dog and a show-bred dog appear to be different breeds but are registered together. The gene pools are almost completely segregated and have been for at least 70 years. A field-bred dog would not be competitive in a modern dog show, while a show dog would not have the speed or stamina to succeed in a field trial.
The English Springer Spaniel field-bred dogs tend to have shorter, coarser coats than show-bred dogs. The ears are less pendulous. Field-bred dogs are wiry and have more of a feral look than those bred for showing. The tail of the field-bred dog may be docked a few inches in comparison to the show dog. Field-bred dogs are selected for their sense of smell, hunting ability, and response to training rather than appearance.
Show dogs have longer fur and more pendant ears, dewlaps and dangling flews. The tail is docked to a short stub in those countries that permit docking. They are generally more thickly boned and heavier than field-bred springers.
The English Springer Spaniel is similar to the English Cocker Spaniel and at first glance, the only major difference is the latter's smaller size. However English Springers also tend to have shorter, and higher-set ears than English Cockers. Springers also tend to have a longer muzzle; their eyes are not as prominent, and the coat is less abundant. The major differences between the Welsh Springer and the English Springer are that the Welsh have more limited colors and tend to be slightly smaller."

As an owner of a young, smart & very independent minded whippet dog, I really enjoy you talking about the genetic predispositions of various breeds. I think that subject is missing from a lot of dog training discussions on social media.

Absolutely! Dog training online and in person is primarily generic and completely ignores the breed. That is so unfair to the individual dog! Before I get my next miniature poodle puppy, I will tank up on Stonnie's videos. Despite the fact that he does not specifically highlight any type of poodle, the lessons are still applicable-- Patience, leadership, love.

…Great job to the breeders (and lucky owners) of Leroy. Gorgeous color and markings, great temperament, athleticism, and easy trainability all in a medium sized package. Spaniels are soft to pet and they don’t shed too much. I love the non stop wagging tail. 😁 🐶 🐾🤎

You're not kidding about the sensitivity to inflection and posture! When I got my ESS, I had to specifically learn to avoid letting frustration creep up on me. As long as I was projecting enthusiasm and positive energy, he'd keep on working. But if I had set our objectives for the day too high and didn't watch my frustration, he'd pick up on it in two words, as you show in the video. The looks and the personality, sadly, don't match and I fear a majority of ESS in my country suffer from lack of work. We used to do roughly 10 hours per week of quartering hunt patterns, nosework, retrieving from water, and such plus the normal daily activities, and I never had any problems with lack of exercise or boredom. I worked from my home in the countryside those days. That having been said, one of the best breeds if you're not physically powerful and want a versatile, very, very ... VERY :D high energy dog that's great with children provided they don't pull the ears.

I have miniature poodles-- Two were very sturdy and I would say were "field breed" (I had no idea) but my two most recent ones are more fine boned and less field. None the less, all of them are extremely sensitive to tone of voice and they can smell your mood. So, very important to understand that and to be respectful and loving of our dogs. We need to adjust to them as they adjust to us.

My Field bred English Springer Spaniel will be 8 months old on the 23rd. All that you have said about the breed has been bang on with him. Every day he gets at least an hour off leash in the woods. Dog has got to be the dog and it’s such a joy to watch him work. He also gets an hour a day, structured walk in the small city where I live. Works great for schooling him when it comes to distractions. Enjoy your channel, thank you.

One feature of the ‘side-quests’ on a walk is the dog will cover a lot more distance than you. Their habit of stopping to sniff then sprinting to catch up also gives them interval training! They do need to run. I completely agree that their joy for life is infectious.

I'm 78 and my new lab is now 16 months. About 8-9 months was pretty brutal with the constant exercising, training, playing etc but then she began to get in a good groove. I no longer "have" to do a long or hard exercise everyday - she can self-exercise enough as we go through or normal daily activities. Enjoy your new pup whatever size it is - they bring so much joy!

Always love your videos and this one didn't disappoint. I own 2 field bred Springers and 6 field bred Cockers (yes it is always a party around here 😂). The only thing I would add is the field bred spaniel energy level is easily 3 times higher than the bench bred you have there. They are still wonderful dogs and I love the energy and kind spirit of the spaniel.

I have had working Cockers and Springers, amazing dogs. Springers are more sensitive and Cockers are more confident and cheeky. Spaniels were bred to quarter close which is great for an off lead dog walk but harder on the lead. Labs were designed to stay at heel, spaniels to quarter close and pointers/setters to hunt at distance first two breeds work for me.

I had a springer spaniel labrador cross. Had her for 16 years. She was wonderful. She would point from the first day I got her. I have the most adorable picture of her at eight weeks old pointing. After that she pointed at things she wanted. :-) She was high energy. High Drive. And a total love. Definitely a great cross. She looked a lot like a border collie with freckles. her parents were working hunting dogs, that's how she came to be, to hunters, went hunting one day together, and their dogs got together, too, so to speak.

I have a wonderful WCS bitch. My first dog due to my occupational commitment. So I retired and got myself a puppy at 8 weeks. My approach has been to allow this dog to work to it's breed characteristics. We go over field and woodland off lead 85% of the time . We do search and tracking training but she loves to hunt and swim. It is so refreshing to hear your advice to allow these dogs to do and be what they were bred to do . The result is a happy dog with no behavioural problems.

I had a field bred English springer for 12 years. He was the second greatest dog ever. I noted that you said Leroy's breeder seems to select for temperament. Is it possible to get the contact information for that breeder? We had another springer who had major problems that we were never able to solve how to fix. She had been a puppy mill momma. My current dog, a GSP, is the greatest dog ever, but our next doggy needs to be smaller. A springer or English cocker could work if we get the right temperament.

Hey Stonnie! I‘ve been following your videos on RU-vid in the past weeks. I‘m fascinated with your off-leash training on the pre-adventure route to the brush pile. So many insights on small but important details relating to dog breed, dog age etc. It’s a true skill how you manage to do the live commentary and how the cameraman/woman keeps the right distance and angle so that the points you make can actually be demonstrated. One thing that occurred to me is that the dogs featured in the videos I’ve seen so far are young dogs, who as part of the learning process interact with experienced older dogs (your labs). But what about semi-experienced dogs? They’re not so afraid of the world anymore so they may venture to where there’s game to chase on the off-leash pre adventure route. The risk is that they can get themselves into trouble with game like rabbits or deer. Running off unallowed after game is self-rewarding (what a high!) and can cause great set-backs in trust etc. in the dog-man team. How do you do off-leash training with older dogs in late puberty for example? Do you do much long-leash training on the pre-adventure run? And then there’s the issue of finding the balance between preventing unallowed hunting vs inhibiting the will to hunt for which the hunting dogs are being held ……??? Or is this all not such an issue on your pre adventure trail because you use it so often for dog runs that there’s not so much game anyway?😀
@StonnieDennis

Great points, most of which I’ve addressed in previous videos. The short answer is the longer you wait, the tougher it is to make progress. There’s a ton of management issues that come into play, for the very reasons you brought up in your post. We primarily provide services for forward looking, responsible, owners who buy the right type of dog and get started early. We do take dogs for remedial training every so often, but the older I get the less I like to deal with the types of owners who put things off and let their dogs develop bad habits before asking for help. IMO, remedial training is a young person’s pursuit because it takes so much time and effort. I’m slowly exiting the business so I have the luxury of being selective.

Everything you say about the breed is very true. I adore my springer, but I wish I would have had a video like yours to watch 3 years ago when we got him. They truly are very sensitive dogs. We fell under the impression of some of those trainers that expect attention from their dogs while walking and prioritized going on "structured" walks. I think that took away from him learning about the environment - ultimately he became dog/human reactive and anxious in many environments. It took me a while to learn, but I modified my methods (first time dog owner), and we've rehabilitated his reactivity in 99% of scenarios after implementing active management techniques from Dr. Amy Cook. He is not in love with playing outdoors, I think environments can be overwhelming for him. But he will *always* retrieve a frisbee. We love throwing them in tall grasses, and he has never left one. With that being said, I bring him with us when my family makes me play disc golf because I am always throwing my disc off course and am terrified of ticks, but my springer doesn't mind getting it for me 😅 He's not a working bird dog, but I imagine those genetics play a huge role in him making a great disc dog lol. He ALSO loves hunting rats! We play a sport called Barn Hunt, and he's great at it! They are very intelligent dogs and can learn skills almost immediately. One of his favorite things is training with me, and he's a joy to work with. They are very sensitive dogs, not just when it comes to training but in general. If I ever cry for xyz, he *always* nudges my head up. He'll separate me and my husband if we play fight (will get between and jump up on the "instigator"). We don't do that anymore to avoid stressing him out! There have been a few people on our walks who he has become particularly suspicious of, and we leave (and are subsequently followed). But I always take his cues to heart. I tend to be an anxious person, and I think that probably played a role in his reactivity as well. I actually think it was a mix of things that caused his reactivity: not purposefully/thoughtfully bred, my early training methods, my anxiety. But like I said, he's come a long way and has been successfully rehabilitated. 😊 I absolutely want another spaniel as our next dog! I too love english cockers.

In my experience spaniels can be predisposed genetically to developing resource guarding and obsessive compulsive behaviours. However, part of this can be from their exercise and stimulation needs not being met. This behaviour is super challenging to deal with when you have young kids in your home. I’m sure good breeding is integral to decreasing if not eliminating this behavioural tendency.

Handsome little guy, super cool breed & people need to stop and really think about what the actual breed of the dog is & what it was created for before buying one. Just buying a dog because you like how the breed looks or even just how that particular puppy looks is irresponsible and typically unfair for the dog because it'll end up being punished, expected to act and be like a dog breed it isn't , end up being given up or worse due to the owners faults and irresponsibility entirely because they bought a dog breed without doing some easy research on the breed, the breeder etc. it blows my mind that with the ease of access to information we have that people still blindly buy animals of all things and do zero research on it at all.

I would say most true field bred springers will actually ignore other dogs and people. Because their trials they have to ignore a brace mate. Every thing was pretty spot on. The dog in the video isn’t field bred looks like euro pet lines. True field bred springers look completely different

@@StonnieDennis i think it is too complicated of a thing to do, if we could reliably do it and it show on a dna test I think that would be great to eliminate confusion. But I think it just needs to be clearly defined and breeders need to be educated and not false advertise pet lines or field bench mixes as field bred it is like a English show lab being advertised as American field lines. I have seen way too many people buy pups thinking they had a field bred Springer when the breeder either lied or doesn’t know enough about the breed to tell the difference.

Is there any way you could cover some spaniels that aren’t as well known? Like the Field Spaniel, Clumber, Boykin, Sussex, etc. and the differences between them? Is a Field more sensitive than an ESS or Clumber or a Boykin? Also, how to best train them to their differences.
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 2 месяца назад
I have a few videos with Boykins, but I don’t have enough experience with the others to offer an opinion that’s worth anything. I generally don’t offer opinions unless I have a fair amount of relevant experience.

For $120 you can get genetic test for dog and rule out against 200 odd inherited diseases. Embark test includes a breed mix/purity test too. Another thing, one of friends owns working line springer, these dogs do need good amount of exercise but because they chase birds, if you have access to open areas or large safe public park, dog pretty much exercises itself 😂

The Americans are known for inventing dog colours..they even have silver labradors LOL Springers are white with liver or white with black. The can be a very tiny bit of light brown spots. This is a lovely dog but it is hard to believe it is a Springer. In the pedigree of my Springer there is even a dog from 1817...

This is from AKC official breed standard for English Springer spaniel .. Color: All the following combinations of colors and markings are equally acceptable: (1) Black or liver with white markings or predominantly white with black or liver markings; (2) Blue or liver roan; (3) Tricolor: black and white or liver and white with tan markings, usually found on eyebrows, cheeks, inside of ears and under the tail. Any white portion of the coat may be flecked with ticking. Off colors such as lemon, red or orange are not to place.

Dogs are great creatures. Stop docking their tails! They use them for communication and seeing some breeds with shortened tails and others without only shows that it is just a fad! Don´t buy docked dogs! 🐕‍🦺😍
