William Tranter’s Model 1868 revolver was his first centerfire design, and became very popular, made in a wide variety of sizes and styles. One of the very rarest of these today is the 5-shot .577 Boxer caliber, an absolute monstrosity of a revolver made for British adventurers worried about facing down lions and tigers. This is the only known engraved example, and it is beautifully done.

I know what perplexes you; did he discharge the replete quintuple of cartridges, or merely quadruple? Well, in the interest of verisimilitude, in all the hullabaloo we did misplace our account. Notwithstanding this being the .577 Tranter, the most efficacious handgun in the world, posessed as it were of the capacity to cleave head cleanly from nape, one is compelled to singularly but earnestly enquire in introspection: does luck inform my inclination? Well, does it, catamite?

True. I remember in the 1980s when the Street sweeper shotgun hit US markets, people complained about the slow reload time, the thought was if you can't handle it with 12 rounds of 12 gauge, you weren't going to do it with 24. I'm sure Tranter felt the same way.

You would think but judging from the specs it's about the same power (see edit) as .45acp out of a very big and heavy gun. So I suspect it would be quite easy on the recoil. Edit: I thought he said a 300 grain bullet for some reason but he actually said 400 grain so yeah, that's a lot heavier than .45acp. Still a bit slower but yeah, it's a good bit more power than .45acp.

@starshipeleven If it pushed the bullet at 725 ft/sec then physics doesn't care if it's pushed by black powder, smokeless powder or a fricking spring. It's all going to recoil the same if all else is equal. (Though if you could make a spring loaded pneumatic gun where the piston was pushed backwards it might negate some of that recoil, but I doubt it could be done within the weight limit if at all and certainly not within the physical dimensions of this gun so it's only theoretical. Well I kind of doubt you could design a way to launch that bullet at that speed using a spring at all given the constraints either, but it's a fun thought experiment..)
@CanalTremocos
@CanalTremocos 4 года назад
@@blahorgaslisk7763 Smokeless powder puts higher acceleration on the projectile than black powder so there's some difference, the bullet takes a few more milliseconds to reach muzzle velocity. The shooter will feel the same recoil, but with lower impulse, and that may be the difference between taking a step back and taking a step back with a fractured wrist.

A story involving a Tranter design feature came about in 1862, as related in Shelby Foote's "Civil Wat: A Narrative," when Union generals "Bull" Nelson and Jefferson Davis (bad name fir Davis' career, as you can guess), ending in the 300-pound Nelson slapping the crap out of Nelson. The furious Davis fled, yelling, "Does anyone have a pistol?" A nearby officer said, "I always carry the item," and passed the weapon to Davis. As Davis headed back into the fray the officer said, "It has a Tranter trigger, work light." Davis killed Nelson with one shot. Amazingly, Davis was cleared of charges and returned to service.

He did carry a pair of Colt Walkers in The Outlaw Josey Wales, which were the most powerful handguns at the time. The Walker Colt was only later surpassed in power by the Mars Automatic Pistol and much later the Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver.

That's a beauty! William Tranter was an awesome brilliant enginutive creative man! Who is said to have made both the best British percussion and cartridge revolvers. Too bad that none of the replica arms manufacture makes any of the percussion or metalic cartridge British revolvers. I think they could make money replicating these especially in the behemoth caliber revolvers. Ian, I hope you get to auction off and show some of the Behemoth Percussion Cap and Ball revolvers in 50/55/577 calibers by Adams, Tranter and the Austrian Scheinigg 55 caliber model 1860.

This is the type of weapon that causes the brown shorts factor. Someone breaks into your house and you fire one round and your local burglar gets brown shorts.And as to reloading who needs fast reloads when you just evaporated your opponent.

Old handguns seem absurd by modern standards, which is funny considering they still are primarily intended to blow holes in things. I guess a long, complex, awkward frontal reloading process is still far better than manually swabbing then ramming 1.) powder and 2.) a mini ball down the shooty end … What ho, tarry forth, Hastings, wot wot!

Nearly 500 ft/lbs, might not be a magnum load nowadays but was a good 20% ahead of the original Long Colt and Remington black powder metallic cartridges and with 400-450gr would smack hard downrange.....ideal for pesky tigers I'd have thought.... especially in the 1850's and 60's You'd really have to go for a black powder Walker or a mad Lancester to get more heft back then
@Apis4

Beautiful piece of engineering and art, and black powder or no, very....beefy....and perfectly fit for purpose. As you say quite rightly, if five rounds from this don't solve the problem, whatever the problem is, that's because of the problem, not the gun, and one might need consider the solution, as unlikely as this is, might possibly be something other than shooting it.
