I don’t agree much with what you say, but it resonates with my initial thoughts before. I believe a woman’s sense security should not be so fragile that her partner must place her above everything to make her feel at ease. You have the whole world to you, don’t revolve around one individual, vice versa for both men and women. Thus, it’s understandable how hard it is to place one single person above all else. I believe that it’s selfish love and shows incompatibility in the relationship if one party fixates too much on the other party whereas the other party has their own roles and duties to attend. I do agree that Yingyuan should cut ties with Yandan though. Yumo is more suited for the security she desires.

I don't mean that he should forsake everything, even his own values and sense of identity, and only live for her. I mean that if there is a calamity, I feel that he should prioritize her safety and well-being (and that of their family) first before he concerns himself with the well-being of the world. If she can't even depend on him for that, then in my opinion, there is no security in that relationship. I'm glad you agree with me that Yingyuan should cut off ties with Yandan. In Yingyuan's case, he lives in a very unique world where he needs to remain a heavenly sovereign lord with immortal powers in order to protect the three realms. However, to continue being a powerful immortal sovereign lord, he must abide by the rules of the society he lives in - no feelings of love or desire among the immortals. Therefore, he can't maintain his immortal status and also have Yandan. He must choose one or the other. He asked her to wait for him for him to finish his official duties as sovereign lord and then he will give up his deity status to be with her in the mortal realm. But how realistic is his promise that he will give up his duties to be with her? I think he will never feel comfortable resigning from protecting the realms. Therefore, his request is very selfish and thoughtless. Saving the three realms and maintaining the peace are indefinite jobs and cannot be wrapped up in a few months. He's asking her to wait endlessly for him, to sacrifice her youth, hoping for him to one day retire. I thought he would mature after his mortal trial. Instead, he has become more selfish. He has unknowingly become his father, Xuanye.

In the novel version of 'Immortal Samsara', 'Agarwood is like Crumbs', in the end, Yandan chooses Yumo over Yingyuan for the very reasons you have described. Like the drama, in the novel, Yandan is a carefree person who loves the simple pleasures of life and the same is true for Yumo. Just as in the novel, Yandan falls in love with Yingyuan at first however because of his inability to love her freely and completely and resign from his post as the Sovereign Lord of the Six and now Three Realms, their love fizzles out like the agarwood which is burnt to ashes. Later on, when Yandan goes to the Mortal realm, Yumo accompanies her and they fall in love. So many people would argue that the novel Yandan is more mature and self aware compared to her drama counterpart as she realises that Yumo is her true love as he was the one who spent time with her, protected her proactively, supported her during her difficult and sorrowful times and loved her unconditionally. In the novel and the drama, the reason why Yumo, unlike Yingyuan, could whole heartedly love Yandan is because he is not bound by any heavy responsibility like safeguarding the three realms or the Heavenly Rules which prohibit deities and other heavenly immortals from falling in love and getting married. The drama itself mentions that there are two kinds of immortals, the Heavenly Immortals and the Earthly Immortals. Yumo is an Earthly Immortal and unlike their heavenly counterparts, Earthly Immortals are not prohibited from falling in love and marrying. So Yumo can fall in love with Yandan and focus on her exclusively without feeling guilty for being a law breaker. I think that if the drama had followed the novel and Chengyi played the role of the novel ML, Yumo, you would have liked the drama better and roooted for the hero and the actor more. Chengyi is a great actor and all, but unfortunately, his acting agency always makes him play the role of the perpetual tragic hero who always spits blood and gets himself tortured in the name of love like Sifeng in 'Love and Redemption' and Yingyuan/Tang Zhou in 'Immortal Samsara'. This is specially true for any drama produced by them like 'Love and Redemption' and 'Immortal Samsara'. They seem to be unable to make good and complelling scripts for dramatic adaptations of the novels. His acting skill is criminally under utilised for these reasons. However this is rectified in Cheng Yi's latest drams, Draw the Line and The Lotus Case Book. In one Chinese blog, it was mentioned that The novel 'Agarwood is like Crumbs' was written more than a decade ago and at that time, it was fashionable for the heroines to choose the second male lead over the first male lead in romances. But now the trend in Chinese drama land is for the heroine to be paired with the male lead whom she encounters at the beginning. In other words, the heroine shall be paired only with a clear cut and well defined male lead, her destined 'one' from the beginning to the end. Hence, the male lead in the drama adaptation of the novel 'Agarwood is like Crumbs' titled 'Immortal Samsara' was changed from Yumo to Yingyuan. As a result, male leads who would be considered dysfunctional or incompatible in a healthy romantic relationship in the real world because of their personality, past, family background etc. get romanticized as the ideal lovers. I know that the plot line of 'Immortal Samsara' is cheesy and not the greatest one out there and the romance not the healthiest or the most realistic by most sane people's standards but I still love this drama because, the main characters are played by my favourite actors, Cheng Yi and Yang Zi. If you want dramas with a great plotline and realistic and healthy relationship between the main leads, I suggest you watch the drama 'Love between Fairy and Devil', starring Dylan Wang as the Demon King, Dongfang Qing Cang and Esther Yu as the orchid fairy, Xiao Lanhua. In the drama, Yandan's character shows growth as she leans to value the so-called 'big' love in the same way as the 'little' love you are talking about just as Yingyuan learns to value the 'little' love the same way as the 'big' love. Maybe the story is their way of conveying how one can juggle both love and responsiblity. I suggest you watch further episodes of the drama before you make further comments about Yandan waiting for eternity for Yingyuan to be with her and Yingyuan being selfish like his father Xuan Ye when it comes to love. You will also learn how the no love rule got established in the Heavenly realm. In fact, it was Yingyuan's mother, Ranqing who established the rule that deities and other heavenly immortals must not fall in love and get married after she discovered that she was manipulated by her husband and Yingyuan's father, Xuan Ye and also witnessed the chaos and destruction wrought by Xuan Ye in his quest to become the supreme ruler of all creation. She was the sister of Yingyuan's adoptive father, the Heavenly Emperor and a Greater God just like Yingyuan, the Heavenly Emperor, the Three Sovereign Lords, Ji Du Star Deity Huaqin and Celestial Deity Beiming. From the later episodes you will learn that when Yingyuan was born, he was destined to become the demon who would destroy the Six realms due to the uncontrollable nature of his Asura bloodline. He was also the product of a forbidden union between the supreme goddess of the Heavenly realm and the demon king. That's why Yingyuan's uncle and adoptive father, the Heavenly Emperor labelled his very existence as a an abomination and a 'sin' which should not exist. You can imagine what constant guilt tripping from a father figure can do to an individual if it occurs from infancy onwards. The guilt over his birth along with the heavy burden of having the responsibility of safeguarding the peace and welfare of the Three Realms as well his inability to extricate himself from the need of adhering to the 'no love' rule for deities and other heavenly immortals put in place by his mother and enforced by the Heavenly Emperor are the main reasons why Yingyuan's love for Yandan appears to be too heavy, burdensome and restrained throughout the drama.

@@monicamendez8159 Love the novel. I read a few chapters and indeed Yandan’s character was weakened in the live version. At this point, c-drama is actively choosing artificial love over character development. When it comes to love, the novel captures some of the most in depth romances existing between Yumo and Yandan. It resonates well and allows the reader to taste the romance between the two even if Yumo wasn’t as mighty as Yingyuan or was the first lead. The chinese proverb recalls that the most romantic gesture, is spending years on the one you love. Time is the most invaluable thing in the world. It’s sad how the tv version decides to erase all these and stray further from the points that bought the novel to life.
