My review of the Engwe L20 - my Sweden Bike 🇸🇪
Details, links and additional info below ↓↓↓
I've been riding the Engwe L20 when I'm in Sweden. It's my first eBike and I'm very much enjoying it.
I've now ridden it far enough that I feel justified in giving an opinion and so here it is, in classic meandering style.

I finally gave up the fight and went full Ebike this year, but im 55, so i'm allowed. iv'e done my stink on pedal bikes. I got a Carrera Crossfuse/ Halfords brand bike. Total cost to make it BIkepack freindly just over £2000. It does mean your pretty well limited to finding campsites every night. Which kinda takes away the cycle tramping nature of stopping where you can for the night. All in all i'm loving it.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 7 месяцев назад
That would be my only criticism of eBikepacking, that you lose that element of self sufficiency which is one of the main draws for me. I'm intrigued by the logistics though and I think a trip in southern Sweden that ends each day at site with a plug is probably very doable and might have to be put in the schedule for next year

I have the Engwe Engine X, slightly modified with bmx-handle bar. I love it. It´s a very robust bike. I´m using it to shop, going to the recycling station, going to work etc. It´s a "work horse" :) More fun going to work with the bike than by public transport or by car.

Oh my goodness - you've basically transcribed my thoughts word for word. I have an old MTB converted for a more comfortable "touring" seating position and a large battery powering my lights, the rear one is attached to my rack. I guess I can't blame people for thinking it's an e-bike, particularly when I blast past them (I cycle often enough to have decent bike legs). There's a very old couple who ride e-bikes around here (north Cotswolds). They must be in their 80s. I see them often and THIS is why I love e-bikes. They always wave and look so happy. An e-bike would have been awesome when my children were young. I towed my daughter for many hundreds of miles in her little trailer. I might have gone further with a bit of e-assist. She absolutely loved it.

Good review, love the nature all throughout the video too! You can enable the throttle by turning the bike on and holding the throttle wide open with one of the brake levers for about 10 seconds right after you turn the bike on (repeat the same process to disable it again). The top speed can be modified in the settings menu on the display by holding down the + - buttons at the same time, then press the + button until you are in the P3 menu and press the power button once to enter it, from there on the number at the bottom of the display will start to flash and you can change it with the +- buttons to the desired "max" speed. Once you set it to the desired settings you hold down the power button for about 3 seconds to save the settings. Do this at your own risk obviously as in certain countries it is illegal to go over 25km/h (on pedal assist) and have a working throttle.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 2 месяца назад
Good info, thanks. I meant to look into this before making the video but never got round to it. I like peddling and would rather have range than speed so I'll probably leave mine as it was out of the box. Good to know though for emergencies 😉
@rukinaa
@rukinaa 2 месяца назад
@JethroJessop Most welcome. I do agree with you about the speed and peddling, that's pretty much my personal choice too. I did however increase the top speed to about 35 and enable the throttle. Around where I live there aren't any cycling lanes/infrastructure so you're always on the main road and that little extra speed makes it feel somewhat safer to ride along the cars and whatnot when there is a lot of traffic. The throttle is nice when you have to stop & go a lot due to traffic too when you can't overtake. I did a few tests with my L20 and when I increased the max top speed to 63 (settings don't let you go higher) the bike would reach around 37-45 km/h on pedal assist 5. If I put it on pedal assist 2 it would remain at 25 km/h.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 2 месяца назад
@@rukinaa that makes good sense. Cycling in traffic is a whole different experience and anything that makes it less dodgy is a bonus. The max top speed sounds terrifying though! 😉
@rukinaa
@rukinaa 2 месяца назад
@JethroJessop hahah indeed the max speed does feel sketchy (it definitely doesn't reach 63 even on a flat road. Downhill it does), 35 is enough for my needs. That's more or less the average speed I reach by peddling a normal bike too so I suppose it just feels familiar to me.

Ten years ago I was cycling from Hampton Court to Versailles, a largely off road ride. At the end of day one I was struggling up a gnarly and steep climb up onto the North Downs and I was overtaken by two guys a good 20 years my senior who effortlessly cruised past me! That was my first encounter with an eMTB. Later on I caught up with these guys, after gently teasing them for a bit they simply stated that those bikes were keeping them out pedalling in their 70's and the penny dropped for me! I haven’t bought one yet but I’m certain that I will sometime into the future.

@@JethroJessop completely agree! It turned out that the guys that overtook me owned a cycle shop(s) and had just started importing electric Haibikes so they were also doing a good job of promoting their wares too! That said they had a support van following them on the ride with spare batteries, ten years ago I reckon they would have been struggling to get more than 20 mile range off road with lots of assist. I believe on day three (80+ miles) they actually ran out of juice miles away from their van. One of the ride organisers heroically cycled the bike some 10 miles to the support van, I reckon the bike weighed at least 35kg so that really was a good effort!

I think e bikes have their place. The only thing that has come up in talking to people in my area that have e-bikes is peddling them home if they run out of battery power or if they malfunction. I have made the suggestion to them to ride the bike with the battery off away from home to train their legs and then use the battery for the ride home if their tired.

Battery management is definitely a big consideration if you are going to do big rides. I assume most people will be doing rides that don't come close to emptying the battery though so excluding tech failures I doubt there is often need to ride without the assist if yuo are careful.

Certainly a thorough review. And I do agree that e-bikes in general is a very good thing! This one looks like a useful bike for many purposes, as you say, (albeit with a slightly ridiculous wheel diameter). As long as you dont have to lift it. 40 kilos seems a lot... I come to think of some other videos from the UK.... You've sometimes had to carry your bike up flights of stairs and over gates and stuff right? I think it seems like a pretty weird thing, to announce a public cycle route where there is these kinds of obstacles... And if someone came there with an Engwe, they would most probably have to find another way... How much does the Surly Ogre bike weigh (unloaded)?
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 7 месяцев назад
I've no idea how much the surly weighs but not as much as this, especially when both loaded with gear. I wouldn't take it on the same routes though. @@JethroJessop Perhaps you can do a bike build? Go to markets, car boot sales, and second hand shops, on your e-bike thingy. See if you can put together either a budget, a classic or a vintage set up for bikepacking. I suggest this, because I did exactly the same thing myself. I found an old retro 80s-90s Kona mtb at a car boot sale. The seatpost was alloy and had seized in the chromoly frame, hence the £25 price tag. I managed to free it over time, and replaced it with an old one from my shed. The seat was fine. I found a second hand pair of schwabe tyres for £1 each at a different car boot sale; and a suitable rear rack that someone had discarded in a skip. I already had some camping gear, and some panniers, but bought a military sleeping bag (practically new) for a fiver, also from a car boot sale. And a Paremo jacket for a pound. Were I to give in and purchase an ebike, in my mind it would be perfect for commuting. As is, I arrive at work quite sweaty some days, so the assist would greatly mitigate that. For recreation, I prefer to ride a standard bike, mainly for fitness. In our area of California we have had some issues with ebikes. Trails that have only seen traditional bikes for decades without undo wear and tear have suddenly become quite eroded after the packed layer on top has been worn down by the heavier ebikes and multiplied laps being ridden on them. The two types of ebikers we encounter are of course- Converts from traditional bikes and New riders that previously weren’t strong enough to ride our rather demanding local trails. It’s remarkably easy to discern between the two, as seasoned bikers moving over to ebikes will exercise the proper etiquette learned over decades, while the new riders seem only to want to impress everyone with their new found power. We always used to encounter slower riders on climbs, and would adjust our pace till a clearing allowed us to pass courteously. Yet now we are essentially harassed by some ebikers who can’t fathom the option of simply slowing down for a few minutes for a wide spot on the trail, and loudly voice their impatience almost immediately. I wouldn’t dream of calling for any kind of ban on ebikes, but it would certainly help if new riders could learn established etiquette from the more conscientious among their friends, and put in an effort to maintain the trails that see increased wear from their heavier bikes.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 7 месяцев назад
In locations where there are a lot of riders all thrown in together I can absolutely see an issue as it does split the crowd in two really, those with assist and those without. I don't ride a lot of trail centres and on a good bikepacking trip I'll go days without seeing another rider so I guess its not something I've come up against very often. I guess, as always, it comes down to everyone just trying to be cool and not inflict their choices on anyone else

I have an e-bike (my only bike) and I use it bikepacking, shopping, delivering stuff, and just riding around. And I take it on trains. I normally ride some of my journey without motor-assist, either exceeding 25kmh or turning the motor to ‘off’. Having a bike that rolls easily without power is important to me. I’m not a 100% fan though of e-MTBs as these vehicles aren’t replacing a car at all - in fact they are taken by SUV to distant hills to ride the trails. Of course, any exercise is good, but in this circumstance are they that different from a scrambling e-motorbike? And my local Trek bike shop appears mainly to cater for this type of riding. Like e-SUVs, e-bikes are getting bigger and so are their batteries.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 7 месяцев назад
I suppose that is an argument against them but people have aways transported mountainbikes to hills in the back of cars even before they were battery powered. I've even done it myself 😬 I agree that eMTBs aren't replacing any cars but I wouldn't assume they are adding to that problem either (could be wrong there). Yeah that 250w 60nm 25kph no throttle is the EU/UK spec for a pedelec bike which for legal purposes is a bicycle. If you increase the power or add a throttle it becomes a moped and then you ought to have insurance and stuff, it gets murky. I guess the UK police have finally started clamping down on derestricted deliveroo bikes not least because if the charger doesn't match the battery you can burn your house down. Being able to remove the battery easily is awesome because those batteries don't really like to get very cold, so you can leave the bike out in the cold and bring the battery in the warm. I totally hadn't thought about that when I got my ebike and I'm so glad I don't have an integrated battery. There is a link at the bottom of the video description. The site is pretty self explanatory once you are there, just a simple payment form. Let me know if you can't find your way there and I'll dig out the direct link for you

Can me please tell anyone, how to clear the 'Trip-Counter' on the display of the ENGWE L20. It shows always the same value like the 'Total distance!. Thanks in advance!

I am an obsessed cyclist with a load of surly, salsa and Genesis bikes… but I also have an ebike - a tern cargo bike, similar to the one you tested but a bit more of an expensive option. It is brilliant. I was resistant at first but realised that by not using an ebike I was driving more than I need to because everyone has a limit in terms of how far they will ride a non ebike, and when that limit is reached, if you can’t catch a bus/train you either use a car or an ebike… in short I agree with you!

A full on cargo bike is almost certainly in my future somewhere. I see people taking several kids to school at once in them or lugging masses of shopping around. They really are a viable car alternative in many situations and as such are a really important part of the puzzle. Plus they just look super cool :)

I know I saw a few explanations of it but I've still not tried it. To be honest, riding off road any faster than 20 or so would shake the bike to pieces i think!

I built up my own with Trump's stimulus money; I needed one: I suck going up hills and at the time I had back issues. E-biking makes riding a bicycle that much more pleasant and less strain on the human body. An e-bike can not only go faster (if they choose to) but also go further in distance when realistically the total amount of mileage you do on an e-bike is actual 50% less. In other words, take your total mileage from the time you begin e-biking and then take the total at the time you end your ride and divide that mileage by 2. This is your actual mileage accomplished as comparing these types of bikes to a non-motorized one. One's ride when carrying weighty cargo is with ease too with an e-bike.

They are great in so many ways. Personally, I think the world is a better place if more people are cycling. Whatever kind of bikes they are using 🙂

@@JethroJessop Tell that to the wealthier classes here within USA; Some of them think that if you are found riding a bicycle that you are in poverty (?????). A lot of people here in USA are very sedentary and tend to make a big stink towards those who are physically active and enjoy being so. Go figure why a lot of citizens here are also over weight!!!! (bigger than they should be for their own personal bone frame structure). I moved from San Diego to Vegas; I have testimonials about the residents here....I know where I currently reside, I more than likely should re-locate to another area of Southern Nevada where I can ride my bike more often in low traffic communities and areas. I can only 'safely' ride where I am currently on certain days and times.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 7 месяцев назад
@@StarEssences Ive never visited the US but Ive heard people say that it can be hard to escape the traffic when cycling certain routes or in certain areas. Here in the UK we are pretty crowded and developed so there is not much in the way of wilderness but it is pretty accessible and you can usually get where you want to go without getting in heavy traffic.

I did. I made a video on that particular ride : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dctk8dNNEZA.html There is a link in the description to route I took on Strava so you can see the elevation and whatnot if you are interested in the details. And the video will show you the kind of terrain I was covering. It was fairly mixed riding and not that hilly but I didn't hold back on the juice so I'd say it was a fairly realistic, long ride in that part of the world.

Bike touring and bike exploring in general is about the experience. And if you are having a better experience on an e-bike, then that is all you should care about.

Good balanced review. As an e-mountain bike rider (and a conventional cyclist) I have uses for both. The stigma surrounding e-bikes is old and boring now and is only coming from a minority of ignorant people who either can't afford them and are jealous or hard core narrow-minded roadies or mountain bikers who think everyone should be as fanatical as they are.

Just adverts Jethro, be honest! You’re not an e-bike person, as I’m not. Not yet anyway. You were given a free bike, so you can tell people on your channel how good it used to. You;re doing engwe’s advertising for them and inflicting this drivel on your subscribers. Guard your attraction Jethro, don;t be frivolous with it. You may regret it?
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 7 месяцев назад
Not at all. This is a genuine review and I'll stand by my opinions. The bike was free but I specifically said when they offered it that I wouldn't say anything I didn't think was true. I've never owned an ebike but I'm absolutely pro the tech and I honestly think they are an important part of a better future, arguably more so than electric cars. I tend not to review gear unless I like it so all my reviews have a hint of advert to them but only because, if I had nothing good to say I wouldn't have made the video. It won't become a common topic but if people offer me free stuff (right when I genuinely need it) in return for an honest review then I don't feel bad taking them up on that.

Be careful I have read reports of similar bikes to this where the front wheel can come loose and fall out of the front forks. It also happened to a relative. I expect all these bikes are just rebranded from bikes made in China.
