I have so many questions. Does clove oil work? Does the stone become scented? Would a vacume chamber draw the oil in better? How much of a price difference is there between oiled and not enhanced? Is $500 a ct good for untreated blue green hued emerald ?
You'd think, and maybe common sense would tell you, that soaking a stone in cedarwood oil will only penetrate so far, and then following it with a shampoo then wash, then wipe will not only remove a lot of the oil you worked hard to apply, but, also, the baby shampoo has a yellow color, so, it will add yellowish color zoning to where the cracks are, aaaaaaaaaand the shampoo residue will cause breakdown and faster aging of whatever amount of cedarwood oil remains inside the stone. smh.
Honestly, if it wasn't for Your channel name, and scientific reputation, i'd judge it as a fakeloo timewaster. Now I'll try it out, and submit the results /even here/!
So, here results as promised: The research: This is a method invented 1982, that would easy the clarity of ground chipped gem material, in order to get clarity into the refractometer. According to GEM-A of GB /sry if something with institutes/, such treatment to the stone gives 0.17-0.18+ or additive to the clearence of the stone in the refractometer. Yes, there are other methods, for such a thing, but there is a strict policy rules /I guess what the market approves, but maybe not..../. Anyway. The Cedarwood oil treatment is considered mostly for emeralds, so that's why, those guys on the video are doing it. In my field work, or lab work, i had to treat 3 archeologically excavated necklaces - Halcedony, Citrine and Ruby ones, in order to conservate them. If they are to be restored some day, i'm on a CLEAR for sure ,) Aside from the not so funny joke, I even used the same brands.....keeping the moisture inside the baby skin, is the thing. Now, 2 weeks later on, they are kept in dark cases in lower than exterior temperature, there are signs of wear off of the oil, but they are ever so slightly around 0.1-0.2 mm on two of the stones in halcedony necklace and so on. There is somewhat of the oil aroma, though it's a bit washed away, or evaporated /not exactly the oil bottle smell/. Should You use the brand cleaner oil ? Well dependable, it will look moistly but not sure for the overall success /TIP: Make a beforehand probe experiment or test ! Unfortunately I made so, but didn't test exactly this, so I went with Cedarwood oil/. Currently making a site for this stuff, so when done, would expose the info plus fotos myself ! That's my take on this one.
