Discover the transformative impact of the Connecting Steps project, an initiative by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, aimed at fostering wellbeing through nature. Funded by the Heritage Fund as part of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, this project strives to make the natural beauty of Sheffield's countryside accessible to everyone, especially those who may feel disconnected from such spaces.
About the Sheffield Lakeland Area:
- Encompassing an area of about 145km2, including 10 reservoirs, moorland, rivers, farmland, and villages.
- Features four Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust reserves.
- A living landscape rich in history, diverse habitats, abundant wildlife, vibrant communities, and strong traditions.
Project Goals and Activities:
- Connecting Steps aims to introduce vulnerable, BAME, and isolated individuals to the countryside west of Sheffield city.
- We collaborate with community groups to facilitate visits and nature-based activities that promote wellbeing.
- Activities include wild art, foraging, photography, mindfulness, flora/fauna identification, and visits to local partners like Our Cow Molly and Stoneface Creative.
- Groups also have opportunities to learn and participate in conservation skills, such as dry stone walling and habitat management.
- A key outcome is connecting participants with local green spaces and communities, enhancing their sense of belonging and wellbeing.
Collaboration and Community Impact:
We work with various organizations, including SOAR, MCDT, Refugee Council, Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group, Sheffield Universities, MIND, ZEST, and Solace.
These collaborations aim to foster a deeper connection between people and their local environments, enhancing community cohesion and individual wellbeing.
The Importance of Wellbeing Through Nature:
Connecting Steps emphasizes the crucial role of nature in improving mental and physical health.
Experiences in nature can reduce stress, enhance mood, and promote a sense of peace and contentment.
