Thanks guys, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. The chant is a drinking chant from an indigenous group in a coastal area of Taiwan, and the drum beat is sampled from Zep's "When The Levee Breaks." Nick, sorry you're not feeling well, get better soon, bud.
Same here. This song, plus 'Sadness', takes me back to when I lost my precious husband in 1997. I had forgotten I had ordered their c.d. It came the same week he passed. It was the perfect music that helped me through a very difficult time. It is timeless, 'other worldly' and takes me away from this crazy world we live in.
The chanting is by Difang Duana (March 20, 1921 - March 29, 2002) and Igay Duana (August 9, 1922 - May 16, 2002), Chinese names Kuo Ying-nan (郭英男) and Kuo Hsiu-chu (郭秀珠), were Amis husband and wife farmers from Taiwan who became known as a folk music duo who specialized in traditional Amis chants. The Amis people are an ancient (to present day) indigenous people in Taiwan.
This reminds me of my dad. He loved enigma and often use to play it for me back in the 90s. I would do anything and everything to be able to listen to this wonderful tune with him now. 🙂↕️
You know where I first heard this? I was with my with my wife, shopping in "Express". It was a hip woman's clothing store at the mall. Some guys hated shopping. Not me. Sitting on a sofa, watching my beautiful wife trying on clothes, in a clean kool store, filled with pretty women wasn't so bad. Actually....everything about the store was a visual treat. This song was playing on some loop, with me relaxing...taking it all in. It was a great way to spend a wife day. Next mall stop, Mrs Fields cookies. Mrs Brown You've Got A lovely Daughter, yesterday and this song now, are significant moments in my life. Ya can't make this stuff up. For me, this is hanging with the wife - while shopping song.
Enigma is just one of the top New Age groups...awesome music! You guys are in for a treat!Their music comes straight from the heart and the proof of their relevance is their continuing popularity...Their music is like Lays potato chips "Bet you can't eat just one!"...Ty for this...
You guys should do Enigma's first album, MCMXC a.D. Start at the beginning with "The Voice of Enigma" followed by all three movements of the "Principles of Lust." The Gregorian chant at the beginning is priceless. And yes, Nick, the song you're thinking of is "Mea Culpa."
Another vote for The Eyes of Truth. (It is the song before Return to Innocence on the same album.) The original Matrix movie used that song during the trailer. The music worked well with the dark visuals and action clips. I was at a pub and slipped the song into the jukebox play list. I was surprised at the emotional response for the 20 year old (at the time) non-traditional music.
Enigma is a OG of this genre. They're the one who started this trend back in 80s with song "Sadness " . Thanks to Enigma we have: Enya, Adeamus, Moby , etc. Enigma is in their own league period.
It makes me emotional to see in people's comments that there are still people who listen to Enigma. My childhood comes to mind. I think Enigma is of higher quality than most of the music produced today. While listening to Enigma, my soul feels like it's in a different universe. It is impossible to explain these feelings. But I always wonder if there is anyone out there who feels the same. :)
I am so glad you got to experience this great tune. It is not a chant its actually a style of singing where they use their voice as an instrument. I think it originated in Taiwan.
More than the song of the American Indians, I would say that it is a Lappon Sami or joik song. This song is very similar to the traditional songs of Lapland, in northern Europe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-woEcdqqbEVg.html
I just love that you never know what you are going to be treated to on this amazing channel. This was so new, relaxing and enjoyable for me. Thanks Mickey D. 😀
Enigma is fantastic. Their music will either relax or arouse you. Tip: if you want to get in the mood with someone you love or fancy, put on their debut album MCMXC a.D. You're welcome ;-)
I have this album (Cross Of Change). Most of the songs blend into the next. I Love You, I'll Kill You is another of my favorites on this one. Sadeness is the first song I heard from Enigma. It was unique in that it used Gregorian chants with a dance beat. Last week Deep Forest popped back into my head. I think you'd like some of their stuff, too.
I Love You...I'll Kill You is one of my personal favorites from the album! The guitar solo play though is just...*chefs kiss* 😍 I have all of the 8 albums from Enigma and wished that Michael Cretu will work on his 9th album whenever that is.

I think Enigma is the project name given by its creator Michael Cretu. In the Enigma project Cretu now has at least 8 albums. I first started listen to Enigma back in middle school more than 37 years ago on Cassette tape.
6:05 Wow, what a blast from the past for me...I fell in love with these songs on the Pure Moods compilation CD with many of the artists you mention (I also remember there being commercials for it on almost every break, especially late at night in the 90's)...It has this song and Sadness by Enigma, also Orinoco Flow by Enya, and Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells...It's some serious mood music...hence the name...lol...
Enigma, a musical project in which many musicians took part. Created by Michael Cretu. For the second album "The Cross of Changes" Michael Cretu traveled the world to gain new musical impressions, which he expressed very well in this album. For me personally the most beautiful album. And yes, Sadeness is also from Enigma.
More Enigma please! If I recall, a few seconds later when starting the next song "I Love You... I'll Kill You", they sampled the drum pattern from the beginning of Genesis "Fading Lights". In a different song called "Eyes of Truth", they also sampled the drum pattern from Peter Gabriel's "Kiss That Frog".
To me, the 'Innocense' is Jesus. We're born, go on our journeys in this crazy world, get lost, bewildered, hear His call and it all makes perfect sense when we return to Him.❤This music is timeless and 'other worldly'.

The Cross Of Changes is a very interesting album. To me it is about relationships and the conquest of South America (as in the title track). It is brilliant, and is how I got my "Notanotherenigma" name
This is so surprising, I have been listening to Enigma for over 30 years and love all 8 albums! And yes, that part Nick sang, Sade, dis-mois is from the song Sadeness on their first album MCMXC a.D and Return to Innocence is from their second album The Cross of Changes.
Wonderful reaction video! Enigma is a german project from Michael Cretu and his ex-wife Sandra. 'Return to Enigma" was a very famous hit in 1993. Please continue with new Enya stuff :) F.e.: 'So I could find my way", "Carribean Blue", "Afer Ventus", "Echoes in Rain", Evening falls".
The chant is from the Amis people (Taiwan) and is called "Elders' Drinking Song", among others. We thought it could have been native American. Plus we are actually part Swedish and Latino's.
Awesome song, awesome album and group / project. Both albums MCMXC a.D. and Le Moi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi are amazing listening experiences from start to finish. "Back to the Rivers of Belief" is one of my favorites along with "Principles of Lust". The song you're thinking about with the "Sade, dis-moi" lyric is from the song "Sadeness" at around the 2:00 mark which is part of "Principles of Lust" at the beginning.
Perhaps you would enjoy some more Vangelis, Nick? Not the poppy stuff he did with Jon Anderson, but from his solo albums, or even some of his film score albums, such as _Antarctica_ or _1492: The Conquest of Paradise._ From his non film scores, I would recommend "Himalaya" and "Summit" (the two tracks are joined) from his _China_ album or "Heaven and Hell, Part 1" from _Heaven and Hell._ "Alpha" from _Albedo 0.39_ and the title track from _Spiral_ or "To the Unknown Man" from the same album. All good stuff.
If you like this, I think you would like Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares, by the Bulgarian State Television Female Choir. Their voices are spine-tingling. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ye1dgqDANWg.html
If this is New Wave music, then it is the Second Wave of the 1990s. The song does have a trip hop beat; a slow hip hop beat. This song probably falls in the 1990s Electronic Dance Music category.
❤ The movie SLIVER was on tv this week, and Enigma's Carly's Song was on as i passed by. It made me want to hear THIS song. Had to call up Redbone chants,13th hour and Niji trance, and Robbie Robertson's Mahk Jchi. Followed by some The Hu with Wolf totem and Eivor's outdoor performance of Trodlabundin. Then this morning, just scrolling through there, this was. Thanks.
Oddly enough. This is a beer drinking song in tai or somewhere in the east. You can find an 70 year old couple singing this chant on you tube🤘❤️🇺🇸 enigma was sued for sampling the chant. And that old couple collects 100% of royalties. Names are difang and igay
