We all covet one another's downtime, and for good reason! The breakneck pace of our work lives can leave us winded and worn, so time spent sunning on a beach, skiing down a mountain, bowling with friends, and reading a good book provides needed respite. Unfortunately, social media has us so wrapped up in others' vacations and staycations that we too often neglect to consider another blessing: that of uptime. Uptime is the years we spend contributing, learning, growing, sparring, celebrating, evolving, and connecting through our work. My unique perspective was born in the pain of watching cancer steal my mom's uptime, and I'd like to share this lesson with those fortunate enough to be ignorant of it. Lisa Parry grew up in nursing homes-they call them care centers now-and had more grandmas and grandpas than anyone she knows!
As a child, she couldn’t foresee the wisdom surrounding her would one day drive her leadership style. In particular, Lisa learned much about the value of time, the importance of relationships, and the vulnerability of the young and the old.
She is a speaker and mentor who enjoys connecting with those who seek healthier ways to think about, talk about, and react to challenges. Her expertise transcends the K-12 space and includes a focus on topics including, but not limited to, people-pleasing, likable leadership, master mindsets, and everyday engagement.
Lisa earned her M.S.Ed. in Educational Leadership from South Dakota State University and a B.S.Ed. in English Education from the University of South Dakota. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm committed to being more present because of this very reason that time is absolutely precious.

Simone, this mindset does make many experiences that were once thought mundane into moments to be celebrated!

Love this perspective...we've got to value the time we have to its full extent. See it for the positive it is instead of labeling it as a negative.

Thank you, Jordan! As I say in the presentation, money & time are both finite resources. We seem to panic over lost dollars & cents but are comfortable with wasting days & hours. Strange but true.
