Ahoy! We are Miguel and Saskia. In July 2020 we left Amsterdam aboard Saetta, a 1983 Moody 41, to see more from the world. On this channel, you can follow our trip: where we go, how we get there, what we explore, our joys and our struggles.
In this video, we get to discover Lanzarote. The place is so unique. I love that if you squint just enough, you might think you’re on the Moon or Mars! Incredible landscapes and those lava fields… breathtaking! Especially if you need to go up a volcano! So, all was good until we were getting ready to go to Gran Canaria and we found water on the engine oil! After a lot of testing and diagnosis, the mechanic advises that most likely the engine needs to be replaced… ah, just watch the video to see what happens!

If there is water into the lub oil and it is salt water you may have a leak from the water circulation pump, most likely seal. If it is fresh water it can be a leak in the heat exchanger and that has to be found. Most likely a tube is leaking into the oil. Are you loosing water for cooling? Then there is already your indication. But if your heat exchanger is on salt water then still you have to pressure test the heat exchanger. NO NEED to take all engine out. As you are afraid that you did have water on top of the cylinders when engine running that is another problem. Most likely when engine is running and there is water into the cylinders the exhaust is white.

I know the raw water pumps with an oil and a water sealing and a ventilated room in between, exactly to avoid salt water ever to cross into the engine oil circuit. I know this because in mine there was salt water coming out of that little ventilation hole, when the sealing failed, and I was wondering why somebody drilled a hole in there. But it was there for a good reason, this reason indeed! :) So I'd assumed this is best practise for raw water pump and this shouldn't be the cause or isn't it?

Another thought: You could replace the hose up to the cooling water anti syphon fitting with a clear one. That way you could observe flow of water. With engine stopped it should be empty or possibly full to the outside water level - definitely an air gap (syphon break) visible. I wouldnt replace the hose on the anti syphon outlet to injection elbow as the elbow could conceivably get hot, and the clear hose will be PVC. You could check the level of water in the water trap (that small cylindrical tank at the exhaust lowest point, near the engine - remove one of the hoses). It shouldnt be more than half full. 3/4 at worst. I doubt water finding its way back up the exhaust into the stopped engine is your problem though. best wishes Richard

Looks like a pretty new engine, it started right up and idled perfectly, hence no worries on the combustion side of things and you definitely won't need a new one, so first: relax a bit and then it's about finding where the water gets into the oil sump. As mentioned, check the coolant level first, which is easy to do. If it hasn't dropped, the leak might be in one of the two heat exchangers. Maybe a gallery wasn't welded on properly. A pressure test of the heat exchangers (not a compression test) will reveal more.

As Peter Den Breejen comment, check to see if the coolant level is dropping. If so it could be the headgasket although this also tends to pressurise the sump and the cooling water and there was no sign of that when your engine was running - no fumes or hot oil coming up the dipstick tube or steam/bubbles from the expansion tank (or pressure cap depending on your setup) How much higher than the max mark was the oil level on the dipstick? Do you regularly have to top up the coolant? As previous comment, check to see if your water pump is shaft driven rather than belt. No route for water into the sump from a belt driven pump I think. I'm pretty sure yours is belt driven. I think if you attempted to start the engine with water in one cylinder it would not turn over rather than bend a rod. Those bent rod pictures in your video where most likely from a vehicle sucking water into the air intake. On start up, your engine appeared to run evenly on all four cylinders. Looking forward to the next instalment, Richard Yacht BoB

Well, I pretty much doubt there is a water clash (not sure if that is the right english word) in your engine. It runs smoothly, not sounds of any collisions of bend or broken rods, no shaking because some cyclinder is not running, nothing. Usually a water clash fucks up you engine completely and you well...lets say... recognized this pretty directly. Also, as you analysed correctly, no evidence of salt water back flow from the exhaust. I would bet this is no salt water inside the oil, this is coming from the inner cooling circuit. A broken head gasket, when leading to water in the oil, also leads to exhaust fumes or oil in the expansion reservoir or leakage towards the outside. Did you check this? At least the head looked clean to me in the video. However with you new engine I find that pretty unlikely, at least when it never overheated in the past. So I would agree to heyt54 below and vote for the oil cooler. That is a possible cause if water-oil crossing without any other severe problems coming up instantly. Anyway I wish yoo good luck finding the problem, but I am also pretty sure you won't need a new engine and I will stay tuned for the solution hopefully coming up in the next episode. By the way, very good job, that you indeed check the oil regularly and realized the problem before any severe problem have been able to evolve. That's good seamanship! :)

Sorry to learn of this and it is not so productive to make a comment now. First of all it looks as though you dodged a bullet with this one - at least I hope so. So, my very late advice (just for next time 😉), if you ever experience water in the engine lubricating oil you MUST never run the engine UNTIL you have satisfied yourself that there is no water in the working cylinders. You do this by turning the engine over by hand two complete revolutions slowly (using a socket on the crankshaft pulley).
