Great talk Carol! Materialism is truly a culprit in our society. Imagine if everyone shared everything.. would people be poor? We need to be back in a collective society, "we" before "me".
Wow Carol, Amen sister.... Thank you so much for being so special and brave in talking about this topic. Unlike the majority, but like so many people these days you are championing a way ahead. I'm sad that any of us have to be saying this stuff at all. I also write a blog and regular articles to say similar things. Of course non of us have fool proof answers about what to do. Yet there are clear evidences about what we ought not to do. Greed and consumerism are at an all time high. cont..
Great video. thanks so much for posting this. awesome. wealth of nations is awesome. love Scotland. from Kentucky, usa. i'm scots-irish. love my heritage. as a Christian we have to strive to help those that are "the least of these" - I despise materialism....
I've now written a book which elaborates the themes in my talk for those of you who are interested in pursuing the topic. It is called The Great Takeover: how materialism, the media and markets now dominate our lives. It is available on kindle as well as print. Info on what it is about and how to obtain it can be found if you google Postcards from Scotland.
Great Talk! The materialistic view causes all sorts of psychological problems. According to materialism, you are a freak of nature and you have nothing in common with your surroundings. You are a machine and all your feelings and emotions are nothing more than chemical reactions and programming. No wonder people are depressed, shallow, compulsive and suicidal these days! Materialistic view has caused us humans to be disconnected from nature because we think that we are separate and superior to the universe! Materialists answer to all your life questions is to consume consume and consume, and take drugs if you don’t feel well. It is time to stop listening to these closed minded materialists and think for ourselves before it is too late.
Salix storm Interesting point. There was a time, about a week ago, that I focused on increasing dopamine by doing the things that I like. That lasted only for a while. As much as we human beings try to control chemicals and reactions, there is no good substitute for the human experience.
Adam Smith considered things like fine clothing to be base because he lived in a time when famine was accepted as part of life and most people were so poor that the following were considered luxuries available for the rich only: clothes without holes, adequate warmth, candles for light, eating utensils and windows.
Love this video...thank you Mrs. Graic. Pls go google The Avatar Course. Hope you and the readers find enlightenment that way. (...just a suggestion and an option) I sure did. Rob Buser : )
We have raped the planet for the resources and have fattened ourselves on all the toys, yet do not have as you said, any self value based upon anything real. It is time to let it all go and return to the sharing and community interests rather than self interests. My friend Mandy has written an amazing book about this subject, see below. Thank you once again for displaying the courage to be daring. see acloudcuckooland dot blogspot dot co dot uk Love and light to you.
How can you talk about how people in the Age of Reason and Enlightenment fought irrationality, supernaturalism and superstition and then say we need more spirituality. We need less spirituality.
"We are not getting these messages enough" I wish. We get this "organic back to nature" and noble savage stuff so often, I'm sick and tired of it. Just consider the movie Avatar. It is very sad that a magical, mystical, anti-science, anti-reason, anti-civilization, anti-capitalism, anti-American, anti-military allegory is now the highest-grossing film of all time. Of all time. It says something very sad about our culture.
