Maulana Abul Ala Maududi and Jamaat-e-Islami: Maulana Abul Ala Maududi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, was an outspoken critic of Jinnah’s approach to Pakistan. Maududi believed that Jinnah’s vision for Pakistan was too secular and focused more on ethnic and national identity than on the establishment of an Islamic state. For Maududi, nationalism based on ethnicity was antithetical to Islam, and he argued that Muslims should aim for an Islamic government rather than a secular, nation-state. Maududi’s influence among religious scholars and common people was profound, and his writings, particularly his critiques of Jinnah, helped shape the negative perception of Jinnah in conservative Islamic circles. Leaders from the NWFP, including Bacha Khan, called for the establishment of an independent, sovereign state of Pukhtunistan. The resolution was a direct challenge to both the British and Jinnah’s Muslim League, as it rejected the idea of partition that would force Pashtuns to choose between joining India or Pakistan. The Bannu Resolution argued that Pashtuns should be given the right to determine their own political future, separate from both India and Pakistan. It was a clear articulation of Pashtun nationalism and a rejection of Jinnah’s leadership, which Bacha Khan and his allies saw as overly influenced by British colonial interests and out of touch with the aspirations of the Pashtun people. Jinnah’s Closeness with the British and Their Influence 1. Jinnah’s British Ties: Jinnah’s political approach was heavily influenced by British legal and parliamentary traditions. They believed that his reliance on British constitutional traditions and his neglect of Islamic governance would lead to a state that was neither truly Islamic nor representative of the diverse cultures within it. This perception led to the derogatory label of Kafir-e-Azam among Jinnah’s religious and nationalist opponents, who saw him as too Westernized, too secular, and too closely aligned with British colonial interests to be a true leader of Muslims or Pashtuns. Their opposition to Jinnah was based on a combination of religious, cultural, and political factors, and their influence was particularly strong in regions like the NWFP, where the demand for an independent Pukhtunistan reflected a broader resistance to both British and Muslim League dominance.
