Someone left this synth outside with no power cord for trash. I brought it home and plugged it in and it worked! Score!!! Only internal sounds no cartridges. What a find!!
Hey Vulture.... I just picked up my SQ80 for $150 at an estate sale. The guy was a music teacher and composer. I stopped in to by his TEAC 80-8 Reel to Reel. Which I did. in mint shape. But on my way out, they wanted $300 for the SQ80. I was getting along great with the dude running the show and had a pile of stuff to pay for. I finally said, Look, I'll give you $150 for the keyboard., with a nice travel case.. He said ok... Now it's in my recording studio and I love it and I don't even play piano. I am a guitar player. But I have two keyboard players in our gang of misfits. So they are coming over in a couple of days. We shall see. Thanks for your video. I will get out there a play with this thing. It's is nice, mint shape. Enjoy
I thought you were going to write, "But on my way out, they wanted $1,200 because it turns out they too live in reality." $300 is cheaper than Yamaha Reface. And getting it down to $150 is the negotiation prowess of a superpower diplomat.
40:08 I'm definitely a fan, but I MUST TAKE STRONG ISSUE WITH THAT COMMENT! I even made a RU-vid video in 2012 that touches on the subject of using moving waveforms in the SQ-80. I actually have much more variety and flexibility with those than I have with my VFX-SD transwaves. That approach also provides literally hundreds of alternate fixed waveforms. The "hidden" capabilities go VERY deep.
Love Both My ESQ-1 And SQ 80. you said early on that you 80 was recently serviced. I've been looking for someone state side is there someone you would suggest ?
Another KS32 user! It's a sadly overlooked workhorse keyboard, I'd say. If you don't need the VFD or endless tweakability but want that late ensoniq sound, effects, and sequencer (and not a bad piano-weighted midi controller!) it does not disappoint. Sold mine after picking up a TS-10 but I miss the simplicity of it. 😌
The VFX is the first Ensoniq synth with digital effects. The TS10/12 hyperwaves are wave sequencing Ensoniq style, but sadly, Ensoniq didn't implement midi clock sync, unlike the Korg Wavestation series. What effects unit are you running the SQ80 through.Great video by the way!
Are those patches the original of the sq80 ?? If it's the case they are much better made and interesting than those were implemented in the esq-1, very impressed ! Amazing sounds ! Well, those extrawaveforms are a complete gamechanger
@@VultureCulture yes can't find any info on the Web but VPS 1 to 16 on my special cartridge for esq1 are names of the banks containing each 2x40 patches... some other banks have other names. The guy who sold me the cartridge said it is the content of all the official cartridges that were made for esq1 in the past but I can't find these originals anywhere or even any informations so... Or maybe just patch creators that have made big sysex librairies in the past... 🤷♂️
Has some special features. Like hold the keys while playing change sound and it holds the old sounds❤ Unique. Problem the CPU should be a 8 bit system So the sounds ok but nowdays sometimes the sounds range are wider. You can.t have only these machine in your system Requires also Reverb to attach too
I like that low fidelity old school sound! Totally unique from anything you'd find in the box nowadays. But I understand it's not for everyone. You should check out my free chorus / reverb plugin Inktomi: vultureculture.live/pages/inktomi
If you can't afford a Prophet VS or a Waldorf M ... this is the next best thing. A used M is really cheap right now. 8 bit digital waves with the analog filter. And I have a VS and Microwave XT, But I really liked your demo.
@@VultureCulture I loved it too! I saw an interview with the person in charge of the music and sfx for the TV show. It was actually a Roland Jupiter-6 that made all the non-dialogue sounds for that show for the first two seasons, then around 1988-89 he upgraded to an SQ-80 which was then used for all of the sound effects and much of the music for the show until the late 90s!
I'd always go with the SQ-80 if you can, the poly aftertouch and extra waveforms are amazing. However, I was floored by how great these ESQ-1 patches sound, so maybe you don't get that much more for the extra waves, and you can get an ESQ-1 for $425 on reverb right now.
hey, I really like that f-111 patch. Would you send it to me? the patch I mean. Also, you called it f-eleven-one. it would be F-one-eleven. Like the airplane.
I saw one on there for $799. Either way, I can't afford one right now. I had to go another route, thought it's taken me years. I'll get one again, eventually...hopefully not in need of major service. @@VultureCulture
