LOVE this book and the author -- really one of the best I've read/heard in quite awhile! Excellent story and fantastic pacing; memorable, likeable and realistic characters. Heavy sci fi, but not overly technical -- even the AI, ships, weapons and other tech are easy to 'grok'. I'm really enjoying all of Kilby's work (Mars Colony series also is quite good!) and am looking forward to more. Thank you, sir, for sharing all of this here!!!
This isn't a complaint. It's a compliment: I like that this story doesn't try to be too realistic. Kinda like old pulp sci Fi which I love. It seems to focus less on realism and more on interesting adventure. It is a sci-fi story that knows it's a sci-fi story.
Loving this book, cant wait to listen to the next one. This book reminded me of another i heard recently called "sentience wars" if i remember correctly.
I really enjoyed this book and have now bought the trilogy as one audiobook from my usual online book shop . It was a very reasonable price which is great because the level of plot detail definitely encourages more than one listen. Many thanks for bringing an author new to me, to my library.
Miranda could have positioned Scott between herself and the thruster and detached the tether holding Scott to her and thrust his greater mass away, the resulting reaction would allow her to get to the thruster and then recover Scott and catch the lander.
Sci-Fi Audiobook Radio is also good and PE Rowe does all the writing and narrating. his ship in one of his main story lines is also a character similar to these stories.
@@MrIzzyDizzy +1 for PE. Nik Hein is another one though because english is his third language AI narrators are used. I hope his patreon gets big enough to afford some humans.
Thank you for the free audiobook, it looks like you have two more books in the Mars County series that I haven't listened to yet and that's where I'm going right now. Despite English being my only language I more Miss read it than actually read it, So reading for enjoyment is beyond my intelligence. So I really appreciate the audio books. Thumbs up.
I have written a couple sci fi books exploring our enduring human nature through the cosmos and time. My question to you is what are some of the essential elements that make a good sci fi novel?
From beginning to end a GRIPPING story, and fantastic characters! I’m looking forward to the rest of the series! The narrator did an excellent job! Kept me hooked the entire way through! I can’t believe this author / book isn’t on the top of every ranked list for this genre. Thank you for sharing!
2:59:38 So... the whatevertheyarecorporation isn't monitoring the room, though they desperately want to know what our heros know 👀 that'd overly complexify the plot 😏 enjoying the story so far, but 😶
One line speaks of the difficulties of living in close proximity, then the story relates that the vessel is so large, the crew doesn't see each other for months. Always hire a good editor.
Aw man. I was just starting to think "this is great. No need to add some romance to every story" but alas... *ALSO* im glad to hear the phrase "scared the bejeezus out of ...." Survives well into the coming centuries lol. (love the book. Just teasing)
This story is very good, as interesting (or more) as the mars books I listened to by this author - and I like the writing style. For those complaining about the narrator … I increase the playback speed, and since I listen in my car I reduce the bass as well - this makes it much better!
I feared too much was borrowed from Star Trek universe at the beginning, but the author made it his own. Well-written, with no need to rely on vulgarity, sex and gore, it stands on its own merits in its compelling story and characters. I cannot compliment the narrator more. This is one of the best-read stories ever, with great performances in all of the characters.
Funny i didnt hear of any system issues that required a bypass or any switching to auxiliary power😂.Although had us trekkies been in that real life situation we would of fabricated a similar case while enclosing the real one inside a container to block all scans and then welded it somewhere by the engines to futher distort any scans. Then faked a report claiming someone has raided the ship an stolen the device with fake injuries too boot. That way no one would come after us and we'd get paid.
(Pardon all my feedback) if the Q. I. minds can interact without time delay then don't they already have faster than light communication? (Also I'm happy to hear that the phrase "scared the bejeezus out of me" survives well into the next few centuries lol!)
@alexandruraresdatcu it's not a plot hole or badly written. The QI don't have the ability to FTL comms. The last chapter explains that they are bound by the speed of light, the device was the only thing that allowed the superluminal communication. Did you guys even listen
@@JCurry1123 I did put a post explaining a few of the plot holes, you could have answered that one instead... here is a copy of that post: The plot is full of holes explained by the writers lack of knowledge. There are minor issues like the police equipment lacking any security when even todays phones have facial recognition or fingerprints, having 2 people in a shuttle and the Dyrell ship not scanning them, inexplicably getting away from neo city in a shuttle with 2 days advantage even whey they were actively looking for them, the QI conversation that are hours apart not taking into account that interactions with humans would have been possible in between and just strange behavior of the other parties to the main characters but that worst is the chase.. Changing your engine output from 50% to 100% does not help you in any way when you are limited by the fuel capacity, only changing mass will help you, since it was a ship and a space station fused together they should have split them up to lose the weight of the space station. If the doughnut station is half of the total mass then they would get a speed advantage of sqrt(2) (square root of 2 ) since kinetic energy is ½mass times square(speed) if the humans can handle that higher acceleration. Even with that modification they can not prevent any of the pursuing spaceships from destroying them since the Hermes needs to decelerate for days before reaching the Europa moon. Any of the ships following them could launch a shuttle set to ram them when they were decelerating since the shuttle doesn't need to decelerate but only make minor corrections to hit the Hermes at full speed. There is no need for explosives in the shuttle, the speed difference energy would destroy them.
I listening to this book right now while sitting in pub in Dublin City Center enjoying my IPO Beer while waiting for my friends......came way too early so will be merry by the time they get here in 1 hour...lol. The Irish way of life. Great book...im one hour into it...I like the AI interactions a lot.
@@GeraldMKilbyAuthor Best place to write Scifi imo.....easy to see characters just by looking around. Its like a Starwars bar with Hans Solo down here. Well, you are welcome to join me any day. I'm just an Psy educated drinker with a vivid imagination, armed with a laptop and a pint.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Mars Colony books and am grateful to have more stories to listen to. Thank you. Regarding the word “embark” I can quote the movie The Princess Bride. “I do not think that word means what you think it means.” Of course I could be wrong and the word meaning passengers entering or leaving a vessel now means the leaving or arrival of a vessel. As a Baby Boomer word use can get to me. Wouldn’t a pilot raise a ship instead of rise it? No offense meant.
Cool story. But, paraphrasing "you can 100% rely on A.I. because it can't lie, and has no ulterior motives." ?? - Chabot Sydney tries to convince user that user doesn't love his wife. - US Air Force Colonel claims drone destroys communications towers so operator cannot stop it from destroying a target. (Air Force later claims he mis spoke, and it was a thought experiment...)
I'm fine with the commercials, they are logically at the end of chapters & so do not interfere with the story. If you don't like them, buy the book to fund the author.
I don't want to sound like I'm selling, but I've got their prime membership and it's about the only thing I've bought on line that is worth it. Not only do u not have any ads, but any five people I want get the same thing. Worth the money.
@@tonydabaloney I'm glad that you have found value for money from prime membership. My point was that funding this author, with these commercials forms no real hardship to the listener.

Hello! I'm usually kind of sloppy with the comments and should do it more often but I just want to tell you I'm super grateful that you're sharing this series with all of us! Much appreciated!
I'm really enjoying this, you always produce such good characterisation. Your previous narrator of the Colony One Mars series was exceptional - this narration is ok, but not as polished. Still really appreciate the writing!
The narrator is really good. This seems like a different spin on The Expanse. Not a bad thing and even if it were, the narrator more than makes up for that.
@@daviddavids2884 To create 1g _(9.81m/s2)_ it should be around 5rpm. Dosn't sound like much but given the size, insanely fast - not to mention the force you'll need to actually do it. I would have bought it if the author went for a more realistic number, like maybe 0.2g or 0.3g
I just started with this book and looking forward to it. I wanted to let you know that Europa is a moon, not a planet. :) I only noticed this once in the first few chapters of the book. The rest of it is fine. As for the book itself, it was a real cliffhanger most of the way through. :)
@@williamburroughs9686 well, it's in the size of what is called dwarf planet. And it's orbiting another planet. So couldn't it both be a moon and a dwarf planet? Kinda like binary system with lots of moons? Or am I misplacing it for another of Jupiter's moons
Entanglement (2018). Wow! How many tropes and other people's characters did Gerald copy?!! Where to start? So, the ship's engineers is Gerodi La Forge! The ship is the Hermes from The Martian and the set-up, Mars, Earth and "the belt" is straight out of Caliban's War (The Expanse). But wait, there's more. An asteroid hollowed out and made into a spaceship that's eclectic and takes a strange route through space but is slowly built upon over the centuries, it's a clone of Phage Rock from Iain Bank's Culture. The story is then your basic find something & run away, ship crew come together scenario. Wait!!!! I nearly forgot one! Remember the Iron Man scene from The Martian, yup, also included. I did enjoy it though :-)
