Man I love One Piece! So I just went to a slight wiki-binge because I started thinking about Kokoro and Chimney's ages (Water 7/Enies Lobby spoilers below, for these two characters): Chimney is Kokoro's granddaughter, and she's 8, while Kokoro is 70. Curiously, she is not related to Tom, and instead Kokoro is/has been married to a man from Water 7 who he had a son with, who's Chimney's father. Apparrently, Kokoro came to Water 7 from her island when she was young, "out of respect for Tom", and worked for him, but still had her seperate personal life for those 50+ years. Tom was 67 at the time of his last flashback, which happened 8 years from the time of the story, which would make Kokoro 5 years younger than Tom. They'd already been in Water 7 maybe 20-30 years at the earliest point of the flashbacks we get. She already has had a son at that point, but she's still working at Tom's, and obviously the two have a very close relationship. That is such a fascinating relationship, you could read almost anything into, especially if you consider the situation on their island, and the relative isolation they lived in as a minority in Water 7. So that gives me a headcanon of: - I'm about 70% sure that Tom and Kokoro have some kind of romantic history. At least that Kokoro used to like him. But it's kind of obvious that that didn't work out in the long term, possibly from Kokoro just getting out into the world and seeing more people, or Tom being hyperfocused on his work, or some other reason. - A lot of things about Kokoro kind of ring of poverty and working her way up from very little. Obviously, that she has to work while raising his son, even though the secretary-job at Tom's is probably light and accommodating work. She probably didn't come to the island with many marketable skills, which is why she leveraged her position with Tom to gain expertise as a sea-train conductor. The reason she is looking after Chimney in an isolated station away from the city, is probably because her parents don't have the time to look after her in the city. Divorce is a possibility, or maybe Chimney's father just works a job that requires him to be away from the city, possibly something well-paying but dangerous, like being a sailor. Water 7 doesn't look like a cheap place to live, and maybe the family doesn't have the generational wealth to hire a babysitter or nanny. - If Kokoro was very young when she came into the city, then she must have been very dependent on Tom for her first years in the city. It is probably the best possible island for someone of her type, but still being unable to literally walk the streets, in addittion to all the cultural aspects, must have made it difficult for her. But evidently she still eventually fit in well enough to settle down and assimilate. Oda also points out, that a feat of swimming Chimney accomplishes at Enies Lobby, where she saves Luffy from drowning off-panel, is only possible because of her lineage, which incorporates this tiny tidbit into the story. And this was all from a quick SBS-answer to a fan question. It's crazy how much story Oda DOESN'T write.
