Thanks a lot for this Abel! I´m at this moment of transformation with my client and it´s very helpful to see how big ones have experienced this devops journey.
At my company we have done this transformation ~TFS 2012 and I can only confirm that everything he just said is true and should be taken as inspiration for getting better. And we also noticed that it is ALWAYS a mindset thing, never a tools/technique thing. If people don't want to do it, it is not going to happen. You need your Satya and evangelists as part of the team(s).
I was born into it. Mom was a computer science professor. Studied computer science at the University as well. That said, there are many ways to get to where I am besides a university education. A lot of code is in c#. A lot of code (front end) in javascript. With some other tech sprinkled here and there.
Very good presentation. I am not a big fan of the mindset of fear as a method to improve. We shouldnt create good unit tests as we fear that 2 am night call with Scott. We do it as its the right thing to do. Same as you guys invested in Accessibility through the company recently. Even if it came with a cost, even if there might not be an immediate gain financially. You do it as its the right thing to do.
Fear as a mindset was really a joke. It is all about doing the right thing. If you build it, you run it! That said, we do feel the consequences of us not doing the right thing. And since we run it, we feel that pain acutely!
Will your teammates be innovative enough if they are frightened by these “calls” from your management? Won’t they be avoiding big changes? Do you track such behaviour?

2 am call in the middle of the night! It seems fear factor is still goes on. When that phone rings and I get up from my bed like a zombie, until answering the phone I was like “I’m gonna burn this company and I’ll find that person who call in the middle of the night and I’ll torture him with all my knowledge”, but then I just can’t.. And said this “ok, I’m the engineer. Whats wrong, here to help you..” 🤦♂️
