@FreePigeon Common sense needed not GPS, there's nothing stopping you accessing the risk then backing up to find another route, sometimes this is captured in these very videos if you watch enough of them.

WHat causes the wheels to lock up? I see that so often. Don't they tow cars in Neutral and wouldn't that allow for the wheels to turn as it is being towed?

@@charmaccents6278 Some cars (mine included) won't allow the gear selector to be moved unluss the engine is running, so if you stall in Drive you can't select Neutral. Often, the steering lock kicks in, too.

@@charmaccents6278 all these modern cars have electronic control of the gearbox, when the engine dies it defaults to park mode, meaning there's a lock pin that prevents the transition from turning. often there an manual release mechanism. However that would require the intelligence to consult the wonders manual. I doubt they actually know that that is 🙃

why would that be any better?? when you go through water you want to be in 1st and rev like mad so water does not get in

no snorkel, no diff breather relocators, he probs realises is not worth risking a 20 grand vehicle when he knows a way around. you often find the ones who actually know how to drive floods are the ones who chicken out first as they fully understand the risks vs reward

@@evolution0016 Well not only that, but there's an indicator pole showing how much water is standing in the road, showing nearly 2 feet. I don't know exactly how much that is in centimeters, but I guess somewhere near 50 centimeters. That is (for me) more than enough to not even try it: if I get the engine going, it will at least enter the car somewhere around the doors.

@@weeardguy 2ft is actually 60cm. As far as i know thats above the wading depth what landrover say. Sure they will go through more than that but but if theres a way round why risk it.

@@evolution0016 As I said ;) I know just enough to know I should not even attempt it ;) What I don't get is that in The Netherlands, when tunnels/underpasses flood during massive downpours, there usually is always someone who either tries it or is stuck beneath the oveprass and is (sometimes) already seen floating. Yet there usually is always someone who thinks he cán make it.

Top of the wheel rim is actually about the factory wading depth of an original Defender or Series (500 mm). They will drive through considerably deeper water if you go carefully but water ingress into the axles, gearbox and timing case are then possible without modified breathers. Under seat lockers and footwells will also fill up if you go much deeper so if you have a tidy Defender you want to keep that way and drive rather than need to immediately fully service or risk a blight of mechanical failures (stock defenders that aren’t abused off road are much more reliable than the internet would have you believe), the driver actually made a parity good call using its full rated capability and not exceeding it. Much better skills than the people that drive a car with a rated wading depth of about 200 mm into stuff clearly signed at over 600 mm and wonder why the engine pops before it floats away!

@@gs188 Careful is what these peeps aren't. 😉 From what I've read, up till recently the intake was in the top of the wheel arch and covered by the plastic splash guard.

@@wordreet Some early discos and range rovers had the air intake under the front wing but its above the wheel arch liner so its a bit more than just a little splash guard, water spashes and even thick mud don't affect if it isn't submerged (which would exceed the wading depth). Defender air intakes are either in the engine bay behind the left headlamp, just under the bonnet in the middle of the engine bay (again well protected from splashes) or for turbo models theres a cold air intake high up on the side of the front wing just forward of the front door. All locations will cope with a fair bit more than the 500 mm wading depth and they will even cope with swamping a bow wave over the bonnet so are quite well placed for a vehicle without a snorkel (which of course you could fit and then submerging the bonnet isn't an issue). The cold intake on the side of the wing is a really good place for it as it means going in too fast and getting water onto the bonnet rarely causes issue unlike the vans which almost always die the instant water splashes up the grille by someone going too fast through quite shallow water. Of course none of this is unique to Land Rovers as I think most off road vehicles like the pickup trucks and even some sprinter 4x4s have the intake on the side of the wing if they don't have a snorkel.

Don't think I've ever seen an EV fail to get through. Even the MG4 that actually swam a bit in the middle of Buttsbury Wash seems to have been OK. Lucky for him, he could have been swept away. Totally lost traction for a few seconds, 1,800 kg of car actually floating.

There's usually a proper road a few minutes away, the fords are generally left for agricultural vehicles and our entertainment.

@@petersylvester2905 seems like people with plain normal cars choose to drive there, among them for sure also people which don't have the desire to splash people for a good video or picture. Thus it seems to me that the next road isn't that close. Here you simply won't find ANY public road with a ford, even the smallest of roads in the countryside will have proper bridges

@@EnjoyFirefighting not at all, the famous Rufford Ford one that started all these clips is only a few minutes extra to go around the ford. There's one near my house that has a bridge or the ford along side each other, the farmers use the ford to save bottoming out their trailers on the hump back bridge so it's left open for them to use.

I think BMW and AUDI made their cars "too easy" to drive, so now every thick stupid person seems to have one! The rest of us have to be extra cautious around them as they usually cause accidents or run people down.

It was a BMW driven by an idiot that wrote off my beloved Golf GTi. Asked his child if the road was clear, because the child's head was obstructing his view. Never mind, got an EV now, trying to resist the temptation to take it for a swim.

Diesels have higher compression, meaning less free space at TDC. I doubt it matters much, but I suppose a gas engine could handle a few more drops of water in the cylinder before disaster strikes. Probably best to keep the water outside anyway. 😂

@@-Jethro- thanks for that, just curious is all, I would have thought a diesel would fare better, having no sparkplugs.

Lowest point on a diesel is the intercooler. Submerging it would quickly suck I water if there was an air leak.

@highdownmartin I'm not disputing the intake route. You stated that the Intercooler would blow bubbles. That would only happen when the turbo is providing positive pressure (boost). If it's not then there will be a vacuum as the engine sucks air in for the intake stroke. The whole intake system (including your snorkel) will be less than atmospheric pressure, therefore, no bubbles and said leak could suck water. With a bit of luck, any water that made its way in would be blown out of the leaking area before being blown/sucked into the intake manifold

@@Catman... one thing for sure nothing ever comes good of driving though water especially with speed.

water isnt compresable so a part in the engine called connecting rods or con rods that connects the piston (the bit that goes up and down) to the crank shaft (the spinning part) has to bend or break, likey what your seeing is a car engine just about managing to running on one or two cylinders with the others suffering bent con rods, bent valves, cracked block, head gasket extreme failure, its why it sounded like a bag of spanners, probably has snapped a con rod or cracked block, itll never truely run again, new engine time, all the cars that stop in the water are right offs, new engine time, but even with a new engine alot of the electronics on a car being submerdged and water in the gearbox means it wont live as long as if they had found a different way home. doubtfull insurance will cover it to so for most its a £10k plus shortcut

Even if the engine is replaced youll often also have issues with electronics etc. nearly all the cars you see that stop in water on these videos suffer the same fate. Even the ones that emit white smoke but seam to drive are dead. New engine time at the very least.

This right here is the issue. Expensive things bought on credit are not given the same care as those hard earned and saved up for. Things too easily obtained are too easily discarded.

It was a pristine 50 year old car, maybe he just wanted to keep it that way.
