Here in lower Ct we have an old gas station that was built around 1910.... long before permits and records were kept at town hall. Around 1997 the property was for sale and still owned by the original family. The banks asked for disclosure on ground contamination so they started doing test holes and found several "junk piles" plus all the old tanks, which hadn't been used in decades, plus most had been paved over with no map locations. The junk piles turned out to be a couple of pick up trucks that were filled up with engines, transmissions, etc, then pushed into holes. The tanks were found to have a little product, and the rest was rainwater. Basically, they were 90-year-old tanks with ZERO leaks. OTOH, there was one tank that was 99% under the slab floor, like in the video. (old addition) They did a few diagonal bore holes and decided the ground was clean enough to allow abandoning in place. The building was classified as a local landmark so nice that they didn't have to do any demolition.

Shiny, new dumptruck! Very cool that it turns into a flatbed with corner columns-- would that be useful for tying down and transporting barrels or non-standard old tanks? Ohhh, wow. Poor homeowners. I wonder if their inspector showed them the settling, had any idea what it was... that seems like something a buyer would have to sign off when purchasing, though. Pity that the brick porch has to go. Maybe it's an opportunity for them to build something that lets them overlook the pond. It's a beautiful property, otherwise. Lots of Jammer smiles, today! Yay. It's easy to see siblinghood between Jammer and Mikey when they both smile. Congrats on the win, Jammer. Complete sympathies on the "most second places," Mikey, from a fellow second-placer. Korey had a reasonable guess, too. It could easily have burn any of the four estimates. ...I never inherited claustrophobia, but that tank chilled the blood when Jammer was all the way at the far end. Wow. How Mikey and Jammer can be comfortable in that sort of situation is highly impressive. X) I clicked into the video thinking the threatened house demolition was hyperbole. Oh, me of little faith. This is going be quite the remediation.

Hey K, First off based on the side compaction on a tank im positive there is no chance of an instant cave in. Nancy had questions about that. That is also the reason why i will no do a soil remediation unless the building is completely down......homeowners were snookered on this deal.
@k.jespersen6145
@k.jespersen6145 Год назад
@@TankMastersEnvironmental Very good to know that an instant cave-in was not in the cards. Available videos of tank structural failures are always the dramatic implosions, so it's not easy to judge how they happen and if there are other outcomes. My uncle was a very successful engineer and he always told me "travel the world when you are young, travel the US when you are old." He vacationed all over the world in any country he wanted to (every continent at least once) and after he retired he drove around with his wife to every state at least once. he told me it was a lot harder to travel out of the country as he got older, but driving through the US with an RV was pretty comfortable. It sounds like Craig has the right idea with all the vacations lol.

I would think that anyone buying a home in an area where oil heating was in use or still is would require a sign off that any underground tanks were properly removed, and area cleaned. Where I live, in Wisconsin oil heat isn't as popular as Natural Gas but it's still used. I can remember several decades back, a street over from where I live, a house was sold and during the inspection of the house an underground oil tank was found. The home had been converted to gas heat but the underground tank was just left and forgotten. It had leaked. The entire front yard had to be dug out and the cost was over the top. In that case it was an estate sale so those that inherited the home lost that amount from the final sale. But ever since then oil heat has always been something I've told others looking for a home to pay attention to. Not saying not to buy it but just pay extra attention. I don't think underground tanks are used much in this area, it's mostly tanks in the basements. You guys' rock with your videos. I never thought one of my favorite channels on RU-vid to watch would be one such as yours, but I like the variation of the sites you do as well as seeing how you all work together.

Shortly after the deadly 1977 fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Northern Kentucky, there was speculation that the contents of an underground oil tank fueled part of the fire in an addition of the complex built too close to the tank’s location. This was mentioned in one news article and has not been mentioned since.

The addition over the tank reminds me of when my great grandpa died. He lived in the same track house for probably 40 years, and he would just build additions or modifications on the house whenever he felt like it and never got any permits. when the family went to sell the house after he died, the city freaked out when the were notified of all the additions, and they made us literally tear them all down before we could do anything with the house, or find an engineer to sign off on it an try to get a permit after the fact. we ended up tearing everything down because it was impossible to get a permit for an addition in that city. from what i remember, it was a porch and a whole extra room that were added on. my great grandpa did all of the work by himself. it makes me wonder if the addition over that tank ever had a permit or if they thought the tank went the other direction? i can't imagine an engineer EVER signing off on a brick structure like that with maybe 6 inches of dirt covering a huge empty tank.

After watching quite a few of your videos I've come to the conclusion that underground oil tanks are a bad idea all around. When they age out and need maintenance, removal or remediation the expense immediately goes up 4-6x. This is also why I'll never own a house with the plumbing inside of the slab. Absolutely not worth it. Gimme a basement or crawl space so things can be serviced.

if the inspectors could sign off on the leak being stopped and core samples around the house did not show any migration of fuel oil would be the first step. can the tank be filled with flowable fill concrete usually 3000 pounds per square foot this is the dirt equivalant strength. regular concrete starts around 3000 pounds per square inch and goes up on normal slab and footing placement. never a dull day.

WEll, once a tank fails local inspector its called into the state and now becomes a state issue. The NY DEC mandates the tank be removed from the ground. I have removed tanks from under buildings before and completed hand remediation, but NOT under this structure. Its not put on footing or and concrete with rebar. When i fill tanks with concrete we use a blue slurr product. Waiting to see what the owners next move will be

That addition was likely installed without obtaining any building permit. Very likely it was built by the previous homeowner. I cannot imagine any contractor who would be willing to build a structure over an existing oil tank. The fact that the structure is already settling and cracking shows that the tank is an inadequate foundation. Now this unfortunate homeowner is stuck with a very expensive repair. Depending on the town, it is possible that they would approve filling the tank with concrete as an alternative to removing it. That new truck is quite the machine!

This kind of remembers when my grandpa at the time did rebuild a porch (since the old one was covered with asbestos tiles and was built without any permit in the 60s), I was there when the builders where building it and there were the old oil tanks for the heating under it. They did check if they where full (cause you know the builder did once find one half full and did recover the oil with a dishwasher pump and it did us it in his with his excavator), then deluded that it was empty (because you know, my grandpa probably did thought about using the oil somewhere or sold it years ago when they switched to natural gas) and there was only a couple of cm of sludge in it they did tear the lid apart with the excavator and fill it with rubble from the demolition. I don't think that in my country there are even laws regarding demolition of old oil tanks, nor that they are registered somewhere... considering that heating with oil is not used at least since the 80s, most people that still have tanks don't care about, they are still somewhere under the garden and nobody remembers that they still are there.
