Raul de la Caridad Gonzalez Brito ("Lali") was born, raised, and still lives in Havana’s historic Cerro district. For his years of significant contribution and defense of the Cuban Rumba, Lali was recently recognized as a Decano de la Rumba by Cuba’s National Council of Cultural Patrimony, the Fernando Ortiz Foundation, CIDMUC (the Center for Investigation and Development of Cuban Music), and UNEAC (the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists). As a traditional percussionist, he has been active in Havana's sacred drumming community for over 40 years, a rumbero for over 50 years and a prolific historian and composer within the vibrant genre known as rumba. He’s played and collaborated with countless major figures and folklore ensembles since 1970. Between 1982 and 1992, he was a key member of Raices Profundas de Juan de Dios, and the Conjunto de Clave y Guaguancó, two of the most important Afro Cuban folklore groups of all time. He’s also performed extensively with dance bands and popular music ensembles including the legendary charanga, Orquesta America (creators of the cha cha chá). Lali has toured throughout Europe and the Americas and is an accredited teacher in Cuba’s widely heralded education system. Lali is a prolific composer. His compositions have been recorded and performed by national and international artists such as the Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro, Los Papines, German Velasco, Frank Fernandez, Timbalaye, Team Cuba, the Conjunto de Clave y Guaguancó, John Santos, Sierra Maestra, Los Rumberos de Cuba, and the Orquesta Sensation.
