Envy and masculinity does not go together and it's not good for men's mental health, or anyone's. Now with the US election, it is time to ask: Is envy a motivator for certain politicians and political parties?

Well put. For that reason i don't own any social madia. I don't even have FB anymore. I miss literally nothing, except I'm less annoyed by some stupid posts/thinks people say. And guess what? Exactly. I had been removing all of my social media over the last months and I really, really, don't miss anything. I still see the same people, maybe even more because contact isn't as lazy as sharing a meme anymore, they have to message me directly now as I do them, and in turn we talk and call more, look forward to seeing eachother more. I never was one to show envy, but social media did drain my time and my attention to do the things I love; creating- instead of consuming.

The economy was tanking, Thatcher had no choice but to create money out of thin air - and our housing stock was the easiest, and safest way of doing it. A Prime Minister's job is to manage the state economy: she had nothing to do with the global crash. This is how foreign economic expansion is funded without taxing us directly for it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Bjorn! I think you're absolutely right about how poisonous envy can be if we aren't careful. An effective way if dealing with it, for me, has been to make an effort to speak my envy out loud when I feel it. I find that the moment I give it a voice it stops being envy, and is transformed into admiration and respect for another man's accomplishment.

This might in your eyes come across as nitpicky, but i ask you not to take God's name in vain. If you believe in God, you should know that it is one of the commandments, that you shall not take His name in vain. If you don't believe in Him, what do you gain by using His name in vain? I truly believe in my heart that God of whom we read in the Bible is the one true living God. And so, i believe it is harmful for you to break that commandment. I wish you nothing but the best, may God be with you and guide you to Himself. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Jesus.

@atheodora lastname As a Christian, when you see another Christian stumble, we are supposed to correct them on spiritual transgressions that they may or may not be blind to, in a humble way. However, this can be misconstrued with sanctimony and self-righteousness, but that in my experience is more common among atheists and secularists. “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. My brother always aspired to do very physical occupations like be a Marine, bouncer, firefighter, etc...but he was a severe epileptic. That was never going to be his destiny. He just spent his life fixated on what he couldn’t do, instead of exploring and developing his other innate gifts. He’s gone now, and passed away as a frustrated and bitter man. He was 38 years old. Life is short. I like to think, we come into this world to reveal who we are, but if you set your mind on a definitive criteria...you might be missing out. That’s my two cents. I hope you find contentment.

Your point can be better clarified in Greek. Antagonist (ανταγωνιστής) = someone that is directly opposing you irrespective of the morality of the means used (that is what you say bad envy). On the other hand synagonist (if there is such word in English, συναγωνιστής) one that competes against you using moral means (good envy, motivation to surpass you etc) . Like football team mates in training. They are all push hard to earn a position in the starting eleven but with moral way so that the "rivalry" between won't hurt the common good of the team Hope that makes sense

I agree with you in that envy is a terrible emotional state but if people wish to truly understand themselves and not stand under the influences of others it will take a lot of self reflection and what has truly impressed upon them throughout their lives to indeed shape the people they've become. "You can tell the quality of any nation's people by the music that they keep" Daniel Roberts (As one stumbles through life) In order to understand what that saying means ☝☝ one must explore what learning is and how repetition locks into the subconscious mind, when you understand it you'll stop watching TV and listening to the radio and you'll begin to properly tailor the influences around you because you'll fully understand what's being taken from you. All humans are forgetful and all of us have encountered the instance when we have walked into a room and forgotten why we walked into it. There is no funny coincidence in that. Scole (Cheers) be well.

Bjorn, this video came at a very good time. We just lost our longtime family dog last night, and it is easy to get lost in the grieving process. This gave me a very good and positive distraction. I have chosen to share this video with family members because I think it is quite important.

This is really a great insight. Seems to be simplistic at first but it has great depth. I have just realized how much the feeling of envy distorts my actions and attitude towards the world.

Envy is an emotion. Emotions are born full grown and pregnant, ready to give birth to resentment, anger and hatred. Principles are the cure. Self-reliance, patients, forgiveness, hard work, honesty, truth seeking are principles. Principles must be practiced to be possessed. Thank you Bjorn. Time spent with you is time well spent.

I've always believed that if someone else made it very far in life, so could I, if I was REALLY willing to work hard for it, I could make it there too. I would look up and feel inspired by those people who suddenly changed their lives into better, I would feel good for them. We can all learn from people who have made it there themselves, great mentors to look up to, work on ourselves and take responsibility for how we spend our time day after day. Rather than just trying to bring those who work very hard down so we get to feel better about our sad lives. I never understood this kind of people. We all have the same time here, why would someone try to pull me down when they could invest all that time and energy into themselves and their growth... Love your channel, greetings from Romania

A great video Bjorn! I must admit I am a bit envious of that chocolate coffee in that wooden cup but I know I can do the same if I wish. So you are just inspiring Bjorn! I don't care about fancy cars or houses or whatever. I live in the woods and what could be better? I agree with you, envy has created great sadness and hardships for those who want to be envious of others. Life is not fair but life also gives each of us the ability to create what we want from our hearts. I'm not a young man anymore but I'm not envious of younger men. I've already been there and done that. But I also know and have learned through experience and the wisdom of others, that I can create those things I desire like chocolate coffee in a wooden cup. Nothing to stop me but myself saying I can't have it. But I can have it. I have chosen a spot in my woods to build a modest shelter where I can have my chocolate coffee by a fire and others can share this as well. You have been a big inspiration to many in my opinion and for me certainly. I took a two hour hike through the woods and by the stream a few days ago and I thought of Bjorn over there in Norway. So Thank You Kindly Bjorn! You are a good Heartfelt man! Love, Light , Peace and many more cups of Chocolate Coffee in your Beloved Woods! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Envy is another visage of hatred; like resentment & unforgiveness, these ultimately corrode the spirit, like Kryptonite. It's difficult to release these feelings; they enable us to rationalize what the soul recognizes as noxious, self-destructive thoughts. Once released, however (& this is a never-ending process), the freedom we experience can be sublime, setting us back unto the path towards fulfillment. There is a wonderful section of CS Lewis' 'The Great Divorce' which beautifully illustrates this. Keep up the good work Bjorn!

In the US Declaration of Independence it says “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” what that means to me is this-when you are born no matter how rich or poor you are or what race you are, you are born naked and helpless, it is up to you to make the rest of your life how you want it to be. If you want to envious or jealous, if you want the the government to take care of you that’s what your life will be, but if focus on yourself to be successful and to educate yourself others will be envious or jealous of you Skal Bjorn 🍻

I tend to agree with you Bjorn. Envy’s something we all feel at times. How we respond when we feel envious of others is a choice. It’s easier to attack others, and tear them down than it is to look inward and work on improving ourselves. As for life being unfair, that is true. If it wasn’t, we would all be born wealthy and never have any bad experiences. Overcoming the difficulties of life is what builds character. It gives us a reason to hold our heads up high. Good talk.

I could not agree more. You are absolutely right. Men must be strong and draw inspiration from our surroundings. We must not give in to the baser instincts but rise above them and succeed by our own merit. We must not be afraid to admit we're wrong and we must not be afraid to ask for help and advice. No man is an island unto himself. Thank you for your insight, Mr. Hansen.

Not been able to comment or really view Your postings in a while. I do enjoy and agree with much of what You talk about. I think you have hit the nail on the head about envy. I was raised to believe if You saw something and wanted it You worked for it. When I was a boy about 11 I recall fishing with my Father and older Brother. I was not catching anything was being a little bratty about that. My Father who was and still is my hero said to me watch us be quiet do the same things we are doing. So I did and I started catching fish. I have applied that method to all I do in life. I see people doing better than I so I learn from them. I see people not doing well I avoid the pit falls that have harmed them. My Father is gone now I am a Father and a Grandfather I have given my Children the same lessons. They are doing well.

It's strange you talk about this; just the past couple of weeks I've suffered petty little attacks from people and I put it down to envy. Envy of my youth, envy of my freedom and balls to say what I think and not care. Thanks for going over this Bjorn :) Also; I received my Gransfors forest axe just the other day! It's so light and smells amazing. You can always tell the quality of a product as soon as you handle it I think! I'm heading out to find some fatwood today :D

Good topic for discussion.Envy seems to permeate many aspects of our lives. Some more insidious than others. From just ordinary citizens to people in power, the later most destructive. It's liberating to live without envy and be able to grow as a man and be a better friend to others.Cheers my friend.

I agree so much with what you had to say here! I'd say that shame is another enemy of masculinity, affecting people from a different direction. That is, from my own experience, these two scenarios especially: From peers who look down their noses, saying to people things like "you have less" and the like, sort of like the opposite of envy in a way. Also, from parents who tell their kids they're not good enough because they might not have quite the same things as another person, or live in the same kind of house. It destroys confidence, the right kind of pride which can be combined with inspiration to rightly urge people forward.
