Very interesting how nowadays teams are appointing managers almost entirely based on their tactics rather than their experience (Kompany, Maresca etc)

I think a back 4 of [Colwill - Tosin - Chalobah/Fofana - James] is likely. Colwill showed he was capable of playing as an out-and-out LB under Poch, he wasn't great but he could do it, and if he can do that I see no reason why he can't sit there and be the third CB in possession. James is ideal for inverting, played in midfield for most of his academy days and was great at it when ocasionally asked under Tuchel. I also remember seeing Gusto sitting in midfield and rotating with Caicedo in a couple of games towards the end of the season (though obviously overlapping is his main threat), and either way the fact that Cucurella has shown his capability to invert as well means we can vary in our approach depending on circumstance, so the signs there are good.

James is better at everything excluding ground duels Caicedo is a very talented cm both of and on the ball And I think enzo would work well with more ballplaying players then marescas Leicster (cucurella/james + colwill/fofana clearly better on the ball)

I am a Leicester fan, so here are my thoughts after watching his performance all season. Positives -Most of the signings made under him were good and enhanced his playstyle. -We played some great football on occasion and sometimes could dominate the midfield against strong teams like Leeds and Southampton. -There were signs of conceptual tactical development throughout the year, suggesting he can improve as a coach. -He is cool under pressure and has belief in himself. -He is good with the media. Negatives -He is very tactically rigid. He often plays players out of position to fit his system, even if it’s not working well, like Ndidi. -He sticks to his preferred style of play, even if it doesn’t suit the current squad. For example, we had four top strikers and four top full-backs but essentially played with one striker and one full-back. We only had one No. 8 and two wingers, yet they are fundamental to his tactics. -He doesn’t seem to understand the importance of individual player combinations in the attacking third. For instance, he would play a slow winger without an overlapping player and expect him to compete one-on-one, or he’d play an underlapping No. 8 who constantly has to receive the ball on his weak foot. -In the deep build-up phase, the wingers played too high and wide, making ball progression difficult. -He lacks a plan B. General Observations -He seems to know what to do when the ball is in the middle third. We really dominated here and excelled at the Championship level. However, he often struggled against a low block due to not understanding final third player combinations, as mentioned above. He also struggled in the first third as he would not bring his wingers slightly deeper and narrower to help with progression. (i think its clear from the comments i have misjudged the chelsea players somewhat) -I can see why he would sell Gallagher; he’s really not his sort of player. -I doubt Jackson will suit his system as he doesn’t favour strikers who can only run in behind. He needs more in build up and someone who understands how to play around the box. (i have clearly misjudged this) -The midfield could be a real issue due to a lack of quality, experience, and intelligence. He is not a manager to bypass the midfield in build-up, so this could be a significant problem.

Nice. Think Chelsea has a very adaptable squad. In defense we can invert the FBs on both wings. When James inverts on the right we can use Colwill as the 3rd CB at the left flank and James would be a perfect makeshift pivot for whoever is playing the no 6 or deep laying playmaking role. Love that you outlined the fact that Lavia is the best we've got in that no 6 role, I've said it that Lavia's the biggest threat to Enzo, but it's nice to have both players. Enzo can also be used as a CM 8 in some games. A player I'm looking to see in the AM 8 role is Carney, think if he can improve on his defensive shift and can be fit, he could be a good option as the 3rd midfielder and be a competition for Cole Palmer. Upfront Mudryk is the most out of place, unless he can vastly improve on his ball retention, progression and overall technical ability. Sterling and Nkunku would be the most suited for the LW role, though I'd rather we get a solid LW. Sterling's to unreliable, Nkunku is more of a supporting forward as opposed to being a natural WF. But if we can make it work, I have no worries. Jackson and Noni definitely would thrive in their roles, things would get more interesting with an Olise and Sesko.

Caicedo is very good at passing more than his off the ball ability, and Enzo was playing with injury last season.

James used to play CM actually... he played there in his first championship loan. He also frequently inverted for Tuchel in the Champions league He will work better than Cucarela Poch inverted Gusto to mixed results

Another point is, you mentioned enzo won't fit into the wink's role, but if you look @10:00 of the video, you'd notice that enzo eclipsed wink's defensive actions.. Don't you think enzo would be an upgrade to winks due to the structure which guarantee's less space of coverage and enzo's superior OTB 1Q...

I do think Reece can play that RB/RCB spot in possession as he’s done so in the past even under Tuchel playing as a CB in a back 3 at times. Do think it’ll be a Enzo regista with Gallagher/Caicedo in the 8 in midfield and think Chelsea could use a LW signing due to Mudrysk on the ball concerns at LW and Sterling’s off ball work rate being spotty.

Think tosin and colwill start at the back for us, Reece inverting (he can do this), Enzo dlp (rumoured that maresca has a plan for Enzo) this was discussed while our sporting directors interviewed him.

I'm not sure how far Maresca can take Chelsea but I'm pretty confident that he can do a better job than Poch. He's technical and can instill systematic play in Chelsea's talented but inexperienced players while Poch seemed to be almost 100% vibe. That's great for outstanding talents like Palmer but doesn't get the best out of the others.

If he can’t tweak and develop his system, like Guardiola has almost every season, without any overlapping runs I fear a bit for Reece and Gusto long-term

James inverting into midfield is a sure bet I think, he will clean up there. I think we should keep Cucurella to give the option to invert from that side too but we need to bring in a different profile of LB/LCB like a Calafiori who can defend wide spaces. Caicedo used in that Ndidi role

Reece james can also function as a tucked in wide CB With more licence to roam forward and give thos half crosses to the far post to the wide wingers.

For these kind of analysis next time please do per90 stats for every metric instead of raw figures for some, as per 90 stats give more context especially when comparing a 38 game season to a 46 game one. Esp for things like number of crosses or seasonal xg etc

I hope that a lot of Maresca's rigidity at Leicester was because of what he had to work with. It was a very good squad for the Championship, but the Leicester players are still somewhat limited in what they can be expected to do. Trying to force that exact same mold onto Chelsea just because it worked okay at Leicester strikes me as an act of absolute madness. As a Chelsea fan I'll be positively unimpressed if that's what Maresca wants to do. Ultimately, tactics isn't about always doing the same thing in the same way, it is about making the most out of your own strengths and making the opposition's strengths count for as little as possible. Thus Maresca's task really shouldn't be making Chelsea play like Leicester 1 to 1, it should be to reimplement the strength on the ball and the positional discipline and dominance of Leicester with the players in the Chelsea team.

unrelated to this video in a lot of ways, i really like your style of content and i do think you have a good level of understand and analysis. what i think falls flat for me is that you over value a lot of factors and it leads to a lackluster conclusion with your overall rating. for example with cole palmer you were spot on about his strengths but you overall underestimated him because of some factors that ultimately were either unimportant or you hadn’t seen enough of to know were truly weakness. overall keep up the good content though!

@PythagorasinBoots I always thought that Enzo played really well in that deep lying role under Potter. I feel like he was quite disciplined, but I will have to rewatch some of those games to be sure. Do you disagree? Do you feel like he lacked discipline then as well? This was a great video btw, a lot more in depth than a lot of the videos I’ve seen on Maresca. You highlighted some key points that I think a lot of them missed.

Nkunku will start once healthy. He is far better than Sterling and Mudryk. I would love to see caciedo in the Gallagher role. I think his offensive vision is woefully underrated. Especially in a quick passing focused playstyle.
