EO2 Top Box Mounting System - Attaching a Pelican Case to a KLR650 for Easy Removal

a detailed look into one of the best ways to mount a top box, in our opinion ... the eo2 system has proven itself 110% worthy over the course of 10,000 miles across America on a KLR 650. The extruded aluminum plates withstood many miles of rough roads, weather, 90 degrees of temperature difference, several tip overs, and held onto a 30 pound Pelican Air 1525 the entire way.
WARNING...The EO2 site is somewhat difficult to navigate, but what you need to get started is a bottom rail and a top rail. You have to add each to your cart separately. The bottom plate can easily be cut to length with a wood bandsaw. Also, the shipping rate is annoying. I apologize for that. Attaching hardware can be purchased at any local hardware store.

That looks like a great design. EO2 should get together with the major case producers & get them to use this as a standardized system. It would be great to use the same mounting system across all bikes & vehicles, regardless of brand. Rockymtnatv & Revzilla should sell this product.

thank you so much for sharing, I was searching for weeks but this seems the best option I've seen!

Nice system. I like the racks that you mounted it too also. Seems sturdy... That stuff isn't going anywhere when it's mounted up.

Bad ass! Great idea thanks for sharing.. got some givi racks seems like it would be an easy conversion to be able to use pelican/harbor freight boxes ..little tougher than the flimsy monokey cases. Been looking at caribu conversion kit..this seems better thanks

Just came across this and love it! What I don’t love is the price tag...$200+ just for a mounting solution. Yikes!

explains why they are out of business now. 2 plates and a spring loaded locking mech shouldn't cost nearly that much

I'm really interested in getting this for my gen 2, but I'm curious how the mounting bolts go through the bottom plate. As it seems you drilled through the top layer of the plate to install your bolts?

Good eye! You've got it well understood. Yes, we used a stepper bit through the top of the bottom plate in order to gain clearance for the bolt head to fit through. Definitely a little unconventional, but it has held up now for over 12,000 wild miles.

What size rails did you use? Part numbers? Links? You need to buy lower rail and snap top, correct?

@140cycleshack8 5 лет назад
we'll get the links soon! Sorry about that. We abandoned them channel over the winter. Rebooting soon!

I am really interested in attaching the same pelican case or a slighter smaller air case to the top of my DRZ400 for an upcoming overland trip I have from Alaska to the southern tip of South America. What are the dimensions of the top rail and bottom rail you used? and what hardware did you use as well? Hardware from the website or did you source it yourself? I see that the website has some hardware options but is rather confusing on what size I would need and what hardware to match. Also, will this go into any top rack or do I need a specific model of top rack? Thanks!

Hey there, sorry for just now seeing this. It’s sort of a “make it work for your situation” kind of system. We drilled and tapped our stock KLR racks for the M8 hex bolts (grade 12.9) that hold the bottom plate on. Personally, if I were mounting this case to my DRZ (I’ve got one too! Plan on mounting one this summer), I would turn the entire thing 90° so it isn’t so wide. Maybe we’ll do a video on that soon.

The mounting hardware was from the local hardware store, not from the website

Is that the low profile or the high profile bottom rail?
@140cycleshack8
@140cycleshack8 5 лет назад
probably the high profile one, it sticks up pretty high, but still works like a charm. The difference between the two isn't much at all. We've logged over 12,000 miles with it mounted at this point (April 2019)

I tried looking for this at the website but couldn't find it... do you have a new link?

I don't understand how you can't just slide it sideways off the bike. *EDIT* nevermind you show at 2:07 that you can't slide it (at least easily anyways, I imagine with a hammer you could hit it a bunch for it to move but that would cause a scene & take a while). Thanks for the detailed video guys!
@140cycleshack8
@140cycleshack8 5 лет назад
It is VERY hard to slide side to side.....very hard as in, we've tipped the bike over off road, landed directly on the case and it didn't move! Amazing technology!

I'll have to look into this because the idea of just drilling into the pelicans became evident to me that eventually the cracks would grow and ruin water-proofing
@140cycleshack8
@140cycleshack8 5 лет назад
@@billaa49 we've experienced no cracking or loss of waterproofing over 12,000 miles, especially since we used four very large washers to spread the load, as well as cork gaskets under the washers...however, you should definitely report back with your findings/ideas. We're all about adding valuable info to the community here. Feedback is super important to us.

@@140cycleshack8 could you show how well the mounting system works against someone with a rubber hammer hitting from the side? I know there's rubber to increase the friction to make it harder for the box to slide off but seeing would be believing for me. I think the cork gaskets and the large washers will prevent cracks propagating from the side of the bolt rubbing against the drilled hole and ensure a water-proof seal. Thanks for that suggestion.
