Lalita Madhava das recently completed his PhD at the University of Oxford. He wrote a thesis on Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and is now working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, in Oxford. Join us as Lalita Madhava discusses his in depth research on Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and how he traced transitions in the Thakura's thought - that reflect, he argued, his devotional transformation.

What a fascinating and deep episode. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur has always come across as one of the most "human" acharyas and to see evidence of his own spiritual transformation in academic story is really interesting. I look forward to a published book or thesis detailing more about the nuances and subtleties in his life. Thank you for bringing Lalita Madhava das on the podcast prabhu!

Thanks prabhu for fulfilling a great desire of Srila Govinda maharaja and Srila Sridhara maharaja, for your help to purchase the London Temple. Both vaisnava's were very dear to Srila Prabhupada.

Thank you so much, Namarasa Prabhu, for bringing all these wonderful Vaisnavas! I like your light, jolly way of doing this service. At the same time, this might be the eye opener to many. To Lalita Madhava Prabhu I wish a lot of success. Ys Alakananda DD

Lalita Madhava comes across as a genuinely enthusiastic academic whose thinking is broad enough to give the topic of vaisnava history the proper attention it is due. Listening to the discussion, he has the mood of a kid let loose in a candy store, running from one thought to the next seeing delight in every direction It seems that philosophical discourse (at least in the dialectical sense) has the prerequisite of first having a broad, established historical landscape to operate from. The question of what is orthodoxy and what is heresy (a question at the heart of any religious school of thought .... and also an oft repeated topic of contention in any one of a zillion snarky online discussions on vaisnavism) can only be dealt with sanely when accompanied by valid historical resources . Unless one is something like a self evident acharya, the inevitable result of having a diminished sense of history is that one has less depth to plumb when determining how to apply philosophy. If the hard yards of spiritual life lie in abhideya, the historian has equal, if not greater, utility than the philosopher, since they establish the field from which we begin to think about problems. Hope Lalita Madhava pr retains the academic streak in his life.

Super interesting! I actually got my first book (The Science of Self-Realization) in Singapore's Serangoon Road! A man came out from the store (Serangoon Rd 100 or 99?) and pulled me out of this material world. Funny about the demigod worship though... And you know, I was just wondering if it will be possible to get Russell Brand on the show one day? Or Dhani Harrison! Haribol xoxo

Namaskar & hare krishna! I'd like to add that (in my opinion), God arranges our lives or lives of His pure devotees in such a way (it is true also in terms of various scriptures) that those who want to find God will find Him/His hand in the lives of His devotees or on the pages of holy books and those who are trying to disprove/deny Him will do so too in the same way. It's only a question of motivation. A scalpel in the hands of a qualified doctor saves life and the same thing in the hands of a criminal will take it. Matter is neutral. Grreetings, Krishna-Dasa

As someone who's spent some time with the devotees of Sri Chaitanya Sarasvati math, I must say in all truth that it really sucks. It's the worst of all the Gaudiya maths, much worse than the Narayana Maharaja sangha even. There's so much ignorance and fanaticism there and basically their books are really unimpressive too. Even Narayana Maharaj's books are better than SCS Math's books. Most of them prefer to read Srila Prabhupada's books anyway. As a critic of iskcon, even I must admit that iskcon is somewhat superior to those 2 aforementioned groups. Also kudos to Lucien Wong for being one of the extremely few Neo-Gaudiya scholar-practioners with both the knowledge and courage to discuss these topics that all other Neo-Gaudiyas prefer to ignore.

Hare Krsna S.K.P. my dandavat pranams to you. I think criticism is a good way to perhaps explore and grow from past mistakes and difficulties. I would be very grateful if you could elaborate more upon your experience with S C S Math. My email address is bpparibrajaka@yahoo.com Hare Krsna.
